So how many people would stick with the research topic in their NSF proposal if they didn't get the fellowship? Also, how many would consider shifting to something not quite exactly the same if they did get it?

This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen.

Here's a suggestion, take it or leave it. I think everyone has probably heard of the gigantic trash islands floating in the middle of the oceans. I've seen some fairly horrific documentaries of aquatic animals and birds killed by the plastic. Anyone have any preliminary ideas for an economically feasible/attractive method of solving, or at the very least alleviating this issue?

Well, I'll just add this to my list of paranoid delusions and nightmares about missed classes and forgotten deadlines then. Thank you so much for that.
