  1. Hi! Anyone else got admitted? I was hoping to start a Facebook group but I'm not quite sure if the school actually starts that up haha! If anyone has accepted or is seriously considering their offer I would love to hear from you! I'm about 90% sure and would love to be able to discuss questions with future classmates!
  2. Hi all I got into Columbia's Human Rights Program with no scholarship, and the Johns Hopkins SAIS MA with a pretty attractive grant. opinions? which should I take? Is an ivy league name really worth that much? Or should I go to JHU and pay way less for an equally strong program if not as strong brand name?
  3. Hi all! SAIS Bologna decisions just got released! Anyone else got accepted? They admitted me to the International Development course and I'm super excited! Would love to start a facebook group or something for potential candidates!
  4. I'm sort of in the same boat! I applied to 6 schools, 4 have gotten back, 2 I am seriously considering. However, one of them has an acceptance deadline for April 30th, the other for April 2nd. Of course the admissions gods decide that my top choice schools respond the latest - and I have no idea when they will release decisions. I sent an email to the admissions department for both schools to extend the deadline until May. neither have gotten back to me. I hope it doesnt end in a rescinded offer... anyways, it depends how ok you'd be to settle for this 2nd school, like if you didnt get in would you really be happy going to this 2nd school? in that case id drop the $600. presuming your first choice is a reach and youre not so confident you'll get it. if you are though and it's a matter of 6 days. I'd wait!
  5. Hi Helix great insights. I actually got into the Columbia Human Rights program (not SIPA) and King's College London's Conflict Security and Development program. I am still waiting to hear from JHU's SAIS program in Bologna. Any thoughts? Columbia is a brand name, but from what you've mentioned above that's not a sure thing by any means. I feel KCL could be more competitive employment wise, but since it's a taught program it could be a lot like undergrad with not a lot of focus towards networking/building a career for post-grad. it could just be attend classes and write your thesis and you get your diploma. i really want to do a program that will make me competitive for employment. i feel if i get into SAIS i might accept it because it's a "professional masters". any thoughts?
  6. I got into Columbia and King's College. The reason I'm going to grad school is really for the employment prospects afterwards. As a non-US and non-UK/EU citizen, I'm curious how this will affect my chances of finding a job in the "host" country or if theyd be very strict and I'd have to go back home immediately. I did my undergrad in the US and experience taught me OPT SUCKS! employers were so hesitant to hear I only had a 1 year work permit and i ended up not finding a job. would love to hear thoughts. Both Columbia and Kings are good heavyweight brand names (i like to think at least) hopefully they provide decent leverage for employment. Although I'm scared Columbia would be just paying for a brand name and not really getting much out of the program. but that's for a different thread...
  7. Got accepted to the HRSMA, I'm unsure I want to do it - not much statistics on post-grad employment, and let's face it, with Columbia's price tag you'd better be assured you'll get a good job afterwards. thoughts?
  8. Hi all, I've been very fortunate with graduate school applications, and now I've narrowed it down to two. I am still waiting for Johns Hopkins SAIS Bologna and Oxford's MSc in Migration Studies, but they're long shots, so now I'm trying to be conservative and working with acceptances I already have. I've been accepted to Columbia's Human Rights Studies Masters program (not SIPA) and King's College London's Conflict, Security and Development program. Neither gave me a scholarship, so cost wise is going to be roughly the same. The reason I want to go to grad school is of course to be as employable as possible and be as competitive in the job market as soon as I graduate. I've been scouring the internet for Columbia HRSMA's employment statistics post-grad but can't find anything, which is concerning. King's College London at least has statistics for the department that offers the conflict security and development course. Is Columbia just a brand name then? Should I accept KCL's offer? I want to work in multilateral/international development areas, particularly ones that involve migration studies like the IOM, UNHCR, UN OCHA, etc. Thanks for your inputs!
