I recently graduated (Dec/07) from the University of Iowa having earned a BA in International Studies and minors in Japanese and Sociology. I am currently in the process of applying to MA programs of sociology for the Fall/08 term. My academic research interests include sociology of education, sociology of work, sociology of gender, and urban sociology. After earning my MA in Sociology, I would like to pursue a career as a researcher at a research agency or teach full-time at a community college. Listed are some sociology programs I am considering: DePaul University, Loyola University-Chicago, Eastern Michigan University, St. John's University, University of North Carolina-Greensboro. I was wondering if there is anyone who has some input, advice, or suggestions about these university's graduate program of sociology in terms of quality of program, what to focus on in writing the SOP, strength in urban sociology...? I have these questions because most of the application deadlines for these programs are not until May and some even accept applications in July. Additionally, these programs appear to have large entering cohort groups each term, are not research intensive programs, and some do not require GRE scores. or letters of recommendation from professors. I was wondering what others think about what the goals of these programs are since they do not appear to be very competitive and focus their attention on teaching and personal attention to students, instead of research.
