  1. Hi Cindy2207, thanks for the info! I have a few more questions I'm hoping you (or anyone else with the knowledge) can answer. Since you're a current SJSU student, I was wondering if you could post some thoughts about the campus, surroundings, student life, and traffic situation around SJSU? Also, how supportive of students are the faculty in the social work dept? Do you feel your time at SJSU was well-invested? Since you applied for the MSW program, what did you like about the school that prompted you to do so. Any dislikes? Sorry if that was a mouthful, I'll truly appreciate your response!!
  2. My status is also "referred to graduate department". I don't think it will change unless the student formally accepts the offer, or if the department rejects the student..
  3. Hi nguyencredible, thank you for answering my question, I appreciate your thoughtful response!
  4. My two cents: I only applied to cheaper State schools because as an individual who already struggled to pay off 25k for an undergrad at UCLA, I am now very afraid of getting more into debt. In addition, I scared the crap out of myself because I googled "student loan horror stories" and read THOUSANDS upon thousands of sad tales regarding the debt trap that hopeful students fall into and can't crawl out. I will be turning 29 soon and I currently have a negative net worth -- which frankly sucks. My hope is to graduate as soon as possible with minimal debt so I can start building my life, saving for retirement, etc. I really don't think pricey out-of-state or brand name schools matter much in this field, unless of course the individual has lofty goals of going into top management or academia. From what I hear, experience and individual capabilities matter more in getting a good job. MSW's really don't make much money and I cringe at the estimated 45k (undergrad+grad) loans that this degree will cost me. In response to the first poster, 50k max is probably the most I'll pay for an MSW. No more.
  5. Hi everyone, I have a general question here: I have also applied to CSU Fullerton, but I would like to know why the rest of you chose this school. From my understanding, their program is one of the newer ones in CA, and is not ranked as well compared to CSULA, LB, SD, or SJSU. I heard from someone that it's best to choose schools who have older MSW programs because it means the school will have better and broader connections, as well as the time to develop a better reputation. Granted, I really *really* like CSU Fullerton's pretty campus and location, which is the reason why I chose to apply. So what about the rest of you?
  6. Honestly, I'm not quite clear on that either. I think I'll have at least until mid-April or so, but not sure. I am assuming they will contact me about my decision when the time comes. The following is the admissions' email I received: Dear ******, Please be informed that your application to our MSW Program for Fall 2014 admission has been reviewed, and that we are offering you a spot in our 2-year program with your chosen Field of Practice; Health/Mental Health. Congratulations, and we look forward to you joining us! Please confirm (preferably via email) your intent to enroll with us, and I will process your official admission through the University. You will receive further information from us later in the Spring, but please do not hesitate to contact me directly should you have further questions. Barry Goldman-Hall, LCSW MSW Admissions Director School of Social Work San Jose State University
  7. Thanks! I submitted my personal statement on the last day, early in the morning. My references told me they submitted their letters sometime during the last week. I don't think it matters when you submitted your application to the department, since they are not on a rolling basis. As long as your SJSU status says "refered to grad department", they will be looking at your application. If it doesn't, then they aren't. Hope that helps, and good luck!
  8. Hi everyone, Just wanted to share that I got a call from Director Goldman around noon today from SJSU. I am accepted to the 2 year health/mental health program. Yay! I almost didn't pick up the call because it's Sunday and I thought it was spam! Director Goldman said he already made 10+ calls to other students who are also admitted for Fall 2014. He informed me the phone call was just "congratulatory", and that we would be receiving emails too. Immediately after, I received the admissions email. For those of you still waiting, he told me that it's still early in the admissions process, so don't fret if you don't hear from him immediately! He said it was competitive this year, because 400+ applicants are vying for 100 spots. I'm still waiting on other applications so I haven't formally accepted the offer just yet, but it's very tempting! Good luck to you all! On another note; For CSU East Bay, I applied as well (on the last day) and was told that the odds of acceptance are under 24%. They are extremely competitive, if not more so then SJSU because of a smaller class size.
