    Ultimate Decision & Why

I’m a Texas resident, so applying to schools in DC was really an effort to see if I could pull a full ride out of my experience. I was accepted at SAIS and GWU. That is good news if you come from a business background and are looking to make a switch. Funding was not near as available as I was hoping. I think my switching career paths is definitely more of a risk, so a large amount of funding didn’t come my way. It could also be my average GPA that pulled me down. All in all, I was very happy to be accepted to the LBJ School and will be matriculating there in the Fall. My total cost will be $12K per year, which is a steal for the degree and connections UT has. Since UT is starting its DC program, I anticipate there will be more and more opportunities to network going forward. Another opportunity that I’ll likely pursue is getting a joint degree with McCombs and walk away with an MBA as well, all in three years.

    Advice for Future Applicants:

Start early, and study hard for the GRE. That exam is not a test of intelligence, it is a test of how well you know the format of the questions. Magoosh was a wonderful program if you’re willing to study on your own.

Only apply to schools you’d actually see yourself going to. I wanted to either get full funding at WWS or work in DC if I wasn’t staying in Texas. I did not see myself living anywhere else, so I didn’t apply anywhere else. An application is a lot of effort, so don’t waste your time, your recommenders’ time, or your money on a school that doesn’t fit in your goals.

Good luck, make goals and follow through.

  2. After reading the question earlier in the thread about transferring from Bologna to DC - I am strongly considering trying to transfer from DC to Bologna.  I want to give the admissions office a call to attempt this.  I plan on majoring in European and Eurasian Studies with the Russia track, also I don't have any funding tied to DC.

Has anyone successfully done this transfer before (in either direction)?  Any advice?

You should reach out to Kathryn Knowles, the Associate Director of European and Eurasian Studies. I skyped with her in January and she was pushing for me to transfer from DC to Bologna. I similarly was planning on majoring in European and Eurasian Studies, and was also accepted in DC.

She informed me that for European Studies specifically, it would be pretty easy to make that switch. She wasn't clear on whether funding would transfer between the two campuses.

I'd reach out to her for more information.

  3. Just got an email entitled "Elliott School Fellowship Support" announcing that I got no fellowship! Too bad, but I like being flat out told nothing is coming, unlike other schools which only let you know by omission.

Me as well. 0/3 on the funding. This is going to be a hard decision if Georgetown comes out the same.

  4. I'm not a current student, but I followed up after being notified that I wasn't going to be receiving any aid. I got a thoughtful note from Cathy White explaining how the Fellowships are determined and the limited availability of funds.

She also explained that many students attempt to secure graduate research assistantships to help fund their education. She said they aren't available your first semester, as professors would want to know you prior to hiring you for the job. Those positions provide a stipend and fund a portion of tuition. There are other jobs available once you enroll.

I think it's safe to say if you established an early rapport with a professor, you might be able to secure funding by your second semester.

  5. I was accepted for ITIP and asked that question directly to the admissions office. The reply was that Fellowship information would be coming out "soon".

I think it's safe to assume more people will be getting money and eventually those who will not will be notified.

Yet again, "soon" is pretty vague.

  6. Per the Admissions Website:

Hasn't stopped me from refreshing my application page to see if they've uploaded anything early.

  7. Did I only apply to schools that have late notifications? I feel like I'm being tortured. I'm still waiting on funding information from SAIS and have not heard back from any of the four other schools I've applied to (GWU, SFS, WWS and LBJ). This has been the longest two months of my life and I'm going crazy not knowing at least some information.

As for my top choice, my overall goal is to go to a top notch program for the lowest cost. If I get accepted into WWS, then that's the dream.

Outside of that unlikely scenario I would be happiest to attend SAIS or UT LBJ. I feel like they are very dissimilar, but fulfill very different things that I'm looking for in my education. SAIS has more students then I prefer, but the sophistication of the program outweighs the lack of attention that I expect. Being located in DC also is a huge plus for me. LBJ is much more reasonable in cost and has the small size I so desire. I think the DC opportunities are there, but I'll just have to be more insistent and focused on that goal from the onset If I attend.

Let's hope that a decision or two will come through this week so I don't go crazy!

  8. Can anyone confirm that there was in fact an "early notification" option on the application that people checked off or selected when applying? I see no such question on the application now or on the pdf copy, but they are saying only those who selected it were informed.

Under Application for Admission -> Program and Campus:

To which of the following degree programs are you applying? *

You have a few options in the drop down menu, two of which are: MA & MA Early Notification

When I submitted my application in November, I selected MA Early Notification and it is reflected on my PDF copy. In mid-November I received an email notifying me that my MA application was complete and I'd receive a response by mid-March. I then received a follow-up email letting me know my application decision would be completed by December 30th since I selected Early Notification. They're still working out kinks, I guess.

I got a response on the 30th. If you haven't gotten one, perhaps you didn't select the Early Notification or your application is incomplete?

  9. Man, I hope they do come out early. Dec 30 is a terrible day to get a notification. Does anyone have an idea of how we are likely to be notified?

From past years, it looks like you get an email asking you to login to the Apply Yourself application portal. Somewhere on the application page there has been a letter discussing acceptance/rejection.

It also looks like that first email goes into a lot of people's spam folders.
