  1. I am a singer and I also have a degree in Portuguese. I can understand and read some Spanish, though I don't really speak it. I also studied French for about 6 years (though my abilities in that language are diminishing lol Pretty much everything I try to say in another language just comes out in Portuguese!) I took voice lessons for a while and have done a handful of performances.
  2. I am sorry that I don't have any information on the actual program, but if it helps your decision at all, I grew up in Gainesville and went to UF for undergrad and I LOVE it there. I did my undergrad in linguistics and Portuguese so I really have no info on the program. I would suggest emailing the program director with your questions. But at least as far as the city and campus go, all I can say is IT'S GREAT TO BE A FLORIDA GATOR!!
  3. Hehe, he and one other person on this thread saw that I speak portuguese and we went off on a little unrelated tangent Sorry we hijacked your thread! On another note, have you heard any good news?
  4. Don't be discouraged. You really can't base your situation on anyone else's. Also I think the reason for the length of your undergrad career is more important than the actual length. either way, I think they look at each case individually. There are a million reasons why someone may have dropped a class or taken more than the standard 4 years to graduate and there is no way a program is going to simply look at the fact that it took someone more than 4 years and toss their application aside. Again, it all comes down to you as an individual, what the program can do for you, and what you can do for the program. Keep hope!
  6. At least, I think that is why they have been doing mini placements!
  7. I see. They have had some trouble finding enough hours for everyone in the clinic so they have been doing mini placements at locations around town. It is the responsibility of the program to get us all the hours we need, so I wouldn't worry about it. If they need to, they will place you somewhere else.
  8. Sayjo, That's a good question and probably one that maybe someone like Dr. Hadley or Dr. Chambers could answer better than I could (phadley@illinois.edu), but I'm not sure. Also, what placements are you referring to? mini-placement, school, hospital, all of them? Main school and hospital placements don't happen until the spring and summer of 2nd year, so all the 2nd years will be long gone at that point and I would assume there would be no problems with finding us placements in our second year (2016). But again, this is a guess on my part. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!
  9. I took 5 years to get my bachelors because in my last semester I decided to make one of my minors a second major and added a year. I graduated with a BA in Linguistics and Portuguese. I retook and withdrew from a handful of classes and honestly, like some of the others in this thread, I was a little all over the place until I swtiched to Linguistics and so my GPA wasn't really too competitive. But I took 3 years off to work as a preschool teacher and finally decided I wanted to be an SLP. I am now a 3 year student at the University of Illinois, which has a very highly ranked program. I think they saw that I had some real world experience and that I had thought carefully about my decision to go back to school. Plus U of I in particular loves students from other backgrounds because they bring a new perspective to the program. So don't worry if your transcript isn't perfect or you took more than 4 years! There is a school (or schools!) out there that will appreciate what you bring to the table
  10. No problem! Good luck, I hope you get pulled off the waitlist for UIUC- it's a great school!
  11. I grew up in Gainesville and went to UF for undergrad! Congrats on your acceptance Let me know if you have any questions about the school or city- I'd be happy to give pointers!
  12. Hi! I saw that you were waitlisted at UIUC. I am a 3 year student here so I've been here for almost 2 semesters. I just thought I'd let you know that last year, they had way more people than they expected accept a spot in the program and ended up with an MA-1 class that was too big (and very hard for them to accommodate clinically). So this year they were MUCH more conservative with their acceptances. I believe the program coordinator said they would send out more acceptances or pull people from the waiting list when they had a better idea of how many people would accept a spot. Anyway, I'm telling you all of this to say don't give up hope! They sent out way fewer acceptances so they may be pulling more people from the waitlist (just my guess). Good luck to those still waiting to hear!
  13. Hey everyone, I posted earlier that I made a facebook group for people admitted to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Soon after I discovered that someone else had made a group just a few hours before me! So if you have been accepted to UIUC (whether you are undecided or are already planning to attend), please join the group that they made!! www.facebook.com/groups/256880691152813
