  1. Yeah, I was in contact with them and they only have availability in 3/4 bedroom apartments and they do not allow pets. Otherwise it looks like a great place! I've mostly been looking on Craigslist and it seems like most places are duplexes downtown. It's so tricky finding housing beginning in August because a lot of places that I've liked want to start renting in June or July.
  2. Thanks for that info! My budget is probably around $650-700 max. I noticed that places were surprisingly expensive. But it seems like they typically include heat in the rent, which is good because even in St. Louis I've been paying over $80/month to heat my small studio apartment.
  3. Anyone headed to University of Minnesota-Duluth's masters of psychology, any track? It's the first year of the program so there isn't much out there or ways of getting in touch with anyone going!
  4. For me, atmosphere isn't super important. My biggest concern is safety, so thank you for that advice on streets! I'm looking for a 1-2 bedroom place to live by myself and I definitely want to feel safe where I live. I would say that I'll be similar to you on paranoia level, haha. Do you know of any specific management or apartment complexes that are fairly priced/safe? I will have a car, so parking off street is important to me as well since I know how snowy the winters get. I'm originally from MN, but farther south.

Tower Grove is definitely a popular area for graduate students. Otherwise, Soulard is another place where grad students can find bigger square footage for less money. I have lived off campus at SLU for the past two years and while housing in the surrounding area is nice, it is definitely more expensive and you have to deal with undergrads. I'm potentially continuing my education at SLU, but I'm waitlisted. When I've thought about housing here, I definitely would move to Tower Grove or Soulard. Both have a lot of fun restaurants and bars but a lot more space. As for Craigslist...I'd be a little sketched out too...
  6. That is too funny!! Yes, let's trade advice! I'll message back on the Duluth thread and the St. Louis thread, if that would be more helpful.

Any help on housing advice would be much appreciated!
  8. Although I'm waiting on my alternate positions for PhD programs, there is a good chance I'll be attending UMD's Masters in Psychology -Clinical/counseling concentration! I'm originally from south-central MN but currently go to St. Louis for undergrad and I'm not very familiar with Duluth's housing options since it has been 10+ years since I've visited! I was wondering if anyone had any advice for areas to look at for housing (1-2 bedroom) or about the Duluth area/UMD in general!
  9. That's because it's only clinical psy! They send a letter "Council of University Directors of Clinical Psychology Guidelines for Graduate School Offers and Acceptances"... "These principles are designed to facilitate the matching process...protecting students from not receiving offers in a timely manner due to some students' holding multiple offers." So if you're not clinical psy, then it doesn't apply!
  10. Also, I hope no one takes what I'm saying the wrong way! I'm not intentionally being accusatory or rude to those who do have multiple offers. Trust me, I would much rather be in your shoes deciding between multiple programs!
  11. I completely agree that no one takes these decisions lightly. I think it's totally necessary to be confident in your decision. I'm only pointing out this this backs up the whole system and makes things difficult for the programs themselves as well. If you read any letter sent by a program that states the guidelines, they say that you should not hold onto more than two offers for one week. But I also recognize that this is a life-altering decision. However, your decisions to decline offers also affects the lives of others. This process is already stressful and crazy enough!
  12. A genuine congratulations to you! However, I think this is a good opportunity to point out that it is not proper etiquette to hold onto more than one offer at a time. Many of us, including myself, are put on multiple waitlists and if people are holding onto multiple offers, this just holds up the whole process for everyone else. If you do have more than one offer, PLEASE do not wait more than one week to make a decision! Your decision affects many other people. Again, congratulations though!
