I'm just backing up everyone's tip about getting research experience. I actually majored in biology and was in a songbird lab for 1.5 years (working with birds was super fun but definitely not a career choice for me!). Then I moved on to a psych lab on bilingualism for over a year that I'm still analysing data for. But getting as much exposure to the field as possible through volunteer work or shadowing an SLP is also really important. I'm also happy to share some stats if you PM me, although I will say this: even if your GPA isn't super competitive, boost up your application with all the research, volunteer, and work experience you can get your hands on. I think that made a huge difference for me this time around.

I'm so sorry to hear that ineg. It seems like you're so accomplished in numerous aspects too! Off the top of my head, I remember reading something either on this year or last year's thread about an applicant who thought they had great references, but found out one of them wrote a bad letter. Is that a possibility for you? In any case, I hope you apply again. Your application will only get stronger each time around, don't give up!

I realllyyyy want to!! So those deciding between McGill and another school, you know which to not pick!

Also e-mailed Mabel and she told me I'm on the waitlist! Wooo this is a great day!

Congrats on 2 acceptances, speechykeen! I'm so happy for you, and also a bit sad you'll be dropping McGill seeing as it was your dream school. But getting in somewhere closer to home definitely has its advantages! I'm still hopeful for McGill, although it might take more phone calls to get answers I actually just got an e-mail 15 mins ago, I just got accepted!!!

HAHAHAHAHA. What about goats?

Congrats to everyone who got in!! And for those still waiting, I'm hoping for good news from the other schools for you!

Congrats PsycD and everyone else who's gotten acceptances! I hope you get well soon! Just wondering, for those who heard from Dal, is it only acceptances so far or have people gotten waitlists/rejections too? T minus 7 hours you guys!!!!!!!

They sent a followup email to people who went to their interviews and it says that they will send out their replies through email according to the deadlines listed on ORPAS. I'm assuming they'll follow the April 1 deadline but I'm not sure. I've already bought some wine as well! hahahahah maybe something like roll up the rim… you win!/please try again. Soo Canadian

I hope so too! That must've been so hard and stressful to finally settle to the idea of moving, actually moving and then dropping everything to come back at the last minute! McGill is definitely my first choice. Being a Quebec resident, the lowest cost of tuition is a big factor for me. And I also did my undergrad there, so it definitely feels like home for me. Although I'm open to expericiencing student life in a new city, I really am a Montreal girl at heart. That's great news CaraL, congrats!!

I actually just spoke to one of my volunteer supervisors, and she said that a past volunteer from many years ago was waitlisted at McGill but got into U of A. She didn't hear from McGill for the longest time and had actually moved to Alberta and was ready to start there, when McGill finally contacted her. So she dropped everything and moved back here! So, to quote Arwen, there is still hope!!!

I hope you get accepted to your first choice, cause that would mean there's a chance for speechykeen and me for McGill!!!

Montreal and the downtown area is pretty bilingual/anglophone, so you can definitely go about with minimal to no French if that helps at all. But if you want to practice it and learn it, then it's a great place to do so! Thanks *SLP! And congrats on the good news from Dal!!

I wish! There's actually more snow coming this way, good thing you're bringing layers. And hope you have a safe trip!
-
heyyyy what are you insinutating? Although in terms of weather, winter can be brutal in Montreal, especially when you're not used to it. AND the SLP building is located on a mountain, just sayin'… (speechykeen and I just reeaaally want to get in haha)
-
I had the exact same dream and am in the exact same position. Great future SLPs dream alike
-
hahaha I'm rooting for you VancitySLP!!

That's good to know, kckc! Yes they were. When were you there? And I hope it went well for you! Mine was on Tuesday at 9am. Right when my group finished the fire alarm actually went off… sooo glad it didn't happen during the interview!
-
CaraL, That sounds awful! Any idea how she found out about the number of people on the waitlist? And waiting until August?!? I hope she didn't refuse another offer to wait for McGill!
-
I haven't contacted them; I'm also one of those who's paranoid about calling for more information and then having my name blacklisted forever hahah. But I did see your previous post about a second revision, and I guess it's comforting to at least have an idea of when we'll hear back from them. Although I've started to constantly keep my phone on me just.in.case! I'm also wondering if there are other people on the waitlist, or if anyone has heard/been through that in the past. It seems like there's quite a lot of information about waitlists from UBC and UofT/Western, but not so much for McGill… fingers crossed!!! The application for Ottawa actually underwent some rather big changes for this cycle. They didn't require any reference letters nor a letter of intent, but rather just the usual transcripts and CV. Although I couldn't find a definite answer as to whether the CV should be in English or French, I just submitted it in French. But in previous years, they only had phone interviews instead of the MMIs. The MMIs themselves consisted of 8 stations, alternating between English and French. You have 2 minutes to read the question/situation and to prepare your response, then 6 minutes to walk in the room and give your answer to the evaluator. You should definitely give it a shot if you can speak French, even remotely! I've heard stories that people who had very poor abilities in French still got accepted at Ottawa. They basically want to see if you're functional in both languages. I'm definitely not the most fluent in French when it comes to academia… I've spent a lot of time looking up translations beforehand . When I was there, the other people in my group were actually interviewing for physiotherapy, were all francophones, and were nervous about the English stations. But YES, everything right now is so uncertain!!

Hi everyone! I just discovered this forum tonight and have spent the better part of this evening reading everything from last year's and this year's thread. There's been so many posts with useful information and great insight into everyone's application process that I thought I'd chime in as well. First off, congrats to all those who got accepted! Last year, I applied to McGill only and was refused. Looking back now, I never would've had a chance, what with my average GPA, limited research and volunteer experience in unrelated areas. This cycle around, I boosted my application and applied to McGill, UofT, UWO, uOttawa and Dalhousie, and was invited to the multiple mini interviews in Ottawa this past Tuesday! It was definitely a nerve-wracking experience, but I've learned a lot from it. That afternoon when I got home, I found out I got waitlisted for McGill! So it looks like we're in the same boat, speechykeen! Still waiting on answers from the rest of Ontario and Dal. Best of luck to all those still waiting for answers!!
