  1. I assume you mean the south of umm, the US? I live in very very tropical India, I am shit scared of the cold, but not taking that into account U Chicago is my top school! Yeah the profs there are incredibly forthcoming, I was very surprised!
  2. I'm interested in theory. What about you? I haven't been notified regarding visitation weekends yet though!
  3. UWChemE- that's exactly what I want to do, but U Chicago hasn't said anything about a visit weekend yet, and I'm waiting on accepts/rejects for the others. Missing classes isn't a big deal, I completed my credits early, and I'm doing only extra courses and my thesis now, the issue is money! I think I'd need at least 3 schools before I can visit. As I said, I want to make as informed a decision as possible. Do you by any chance know how the theory profs are? I've been looking at Cui, Yethiraj, and Skinner.
  4. I really really want to attend the visit weekend, but what they're paying me doesn't even cover half of the travel costs (international student). I often feel like I made a hasty decision for my undergrad school- I picked the "obvious" choice, and have regretted it often- so I'm going to be very slow and careful with this one, but I can't afford it if they're the only ones paying me. :( I am currently conducting research in, and planning to pursue theoretical chemistry, in particular molecular biophysics.
  5. Hello! Is anyone planning on accepting this one? Also, does anyone know if they're going to have a visit weekend?
  6. bsharpe- Yep I am trying to draw the same balance, between how expensive it is and how much of a difference it would make. I have reasonable math scores and average physics scores- we're graded on a relative scale at our institute and in every math/phy course I have taken, I have had the company of physics/electrical engineering students, which really doesn't work out well for me. And btw- I will also be applying for (theoretical) biophysics programs!
  7. Thank you all for your replies! First- I'd like to clarify bsharpe and geographyrocks's points- I mentioned top 10 mainly because Columbia U and Stanford are two schools I would LOVE to go to on the basis of my interests. I'm not going to deny that "the prestige" was irrelevant to me while saying "top 10", but my primary reasons remain that these two schools are dream schools for me because of professors working there- in fact in particular stanford. QuantumBuckyball and Marcus- I am aware that GRE is only one part of my app, and I also know that it is a %ile system. I am just worried that 164 doesn't make the cut (and on a %ile range it is 88th- which is LOW!). I also know that this was definitely not my best (or average) math performance. I still can't get my head around it, really. I know my verbal score is good- I'm just scared that my quant doesn't make the cut. As bsharpe said: "mid to high 160's"- I don't know if 164 works!
  8. I've been getting a little scared over my GRE scores, they're lower than what I expected. My quant score is especially disappointing- I expected a near-full score on the basis of both practice and the fact that I was reasonably confident in the exam itself. I don't want to retake because of how expensive it is for me, but I really am aiming for top-10. Specifically aiming for Stanford and Columbia U, but others too. Do you think it is a satisfactory score, or will the Quant score affect my application badly? Thanks P.S. Foreign student!

  10. I am an Indian undergraduate in Chemistry and I completed the AS levels in English with an A grade in high school 5 years back, and I will soon be applying to schools for phD programs. English was not a "foreign language" but a first language. Will I need the TOEFL while applying? I am not sure if this will be relevant, but I came first all over India in the English AS levels of '09.
  11. Thank you so much heartshapedcookie, bsharp, DerpTastic for your replies! I will probably decide only after taking practice tests and figuring out whether the time spent studying for it will be worth it.
  12. Hi, I'll be applying for a phD program in Chemistry, and I want to specialize in Theory. I am wondering whether or not to give the Physics subject GRE. These are the factors I am considering: 1. A strong background in physics is always good for theoretical chemists. 2. I've done several physics courses but because of time constraints, I haven't scored great grades in them 3. I am fairly confident of doing reasonably, on the basis of the subject contents. 4. It's expensive 5. Preparing for it will take up some time in a generally stressful semester- and I can't be sure of how well I'll do! 6. I don't know how much of a difference it will make on my application. Any advice will be greatly appreciated Thanks.
