  1. @Speechies - For UoT and Western, there are sections where you input information for "Volunteer experiences in SLP or AUD", as well as for "Other Volunteer Experiences". You list the date range, hours, title, and a (very) brief description of the volunteer experience involved. For other schools you are given more space to write about your volunteer experiences/duties.

@futureslpcan - Regardless of when you took the prereqs, you will list the course/marks that you received when completing the application. However, the subGPA calculation will only be of the the last 10 full or 20 half undergraduate course credits from your transcript (ORPAS calculates it for UoT and UWO when they have received the transcript). If the last two years you completed 19 half credit courses, they will take the average of the semester prior to those for the 20th half credit course.

@lindzzz - Sorry, I'm not sure about that one! But, I don't think they would have a specific amount of spots.

  2. 5-10 would be more than enough. Rather than quantity, think about quality.. you want somewhere where you can get direct exposure with an SLP and clients, where you can learn about the field, and where you can network (meet others in the field who can give you good advice)

As well as someone who will be able to give you a great clinical reference when the time comes! I only worked with one SLP throughout the past couple years, but I was able to help out with children and teens/adults with developmental delays. Since you can only submit one clinical reference, and the remainder should probably come from academia, it would be great to have a SLP who knows you really well and can say how you've been with them for however long. It would also be really beneficial if after taking a class with a professor, you could get into a research lab with them as well - that way they can speak about both your academic performance as well as your work in the lab.

  3. So, for a while I didn't think I would have a choice between schools, but now I do... I've been accepted to Syracuse University and Eastern Michigan.

I was able to go to the open house for Syracuse and they have really great facilities, however, in the end it is pricier than Eastern Michigan. I've read that both programs are a bit disorganized and I've had difficulties navigating around Eastern Michigan's website for more information. The campus for Syracuse was nice (at least the main campus), but most of the time I would be at South campus, which wasn't as nice. I've looked at the virtual tour for Eastern Michigan and it seems really nice in comparison.

Looking past these superficial aspects, does anyone know of anyone in these programs and could let me know of any pros/cons?

  4. I contacted U of T SLP this afternoon to ask this question and was told that emails were sent out this morning only to applicants who were accepted or wait listed and that rejections were sent out by regular mail today.

If you haven't heard from UoT, you could have been waitlisted or rejected. I sent an email yesterday asking about my status, and Mabel replied today letting me know that I was waitlisted. So it looks like only acceptances were sent by email (not waitlists or rejections).

Also, anyone have any idea how long the waitlist is at UoT?

  5. For all of you people waitlisted at U of A, just thought I would share a recently received email from the school that was addressed to 30 students regarding registration. I would assume this means there are still 25 or so individuals who have yet to accept/decline their offer. Hope this helps <3

Thanks for letting us know! :)

  6. For those wondering about Alberta, in the waitlist email they did mention that they have already sent out offer letters to 56 students and they will have until April 7 to make a decision. So, it sounds like acceptance letters have already been sent out, and other waitlists might come out eventually.

  7. Thank you!! Has anyone else heard from Alberta today? I emailed them asking a question this morning and they responded shortly after. And now, like 6 hours later I get an email saying I'm wait listed. Find it weird that no one else has posted here yet about hearing from Alberta today! Also, judging by the email she sent me it sounds like all of the acceptances have gone out now?

I have also been waitlisted at Alberta! I received an email from them about an hour ago informing me :).

Btw if you're wondering, Bear Tracks has not been updated yet.

  8. Congrats on the acceptance let'sgo! I can't go to the open house, it doesn't really give me much time to tell my workplace to get time off and to get a cheap flight last minute from the west coast :-/ but I'm currently drafting an email with all the questions I have for them. Are you going?

Yeah, I will be attending the open house. It's not too far of a drive for me, so I'm going for the day!

Has anyone heard from University of Vermont or Eastern Michigan? I saw some people receive acceptances to Vermont, but I was just wondering if anyone knew if there was more to come, or if any waitlists or rejections have been sent out. I'm still waiting on a letter from Bloomington, which was probably sent out a couple weeks ago, but since I live in Canada, it will likely take a bit longer..

  9. GUYS! I got my first acceptance to Syracuse! :-) I was so surprised. As a second year applicant it was torture going through the process for another year and WAITING. But it was all worth it :-) I just have to say this thread is awesome and full of the support I needed to survive this process a second round. You guys rock! I know exactly how difficult it is to wait and wait while you see others being admitted. At my school we had a chant: you only need one acceptance! So hang in there everyone!

Now, I'm from the West Coast and the only info I have on Syracuse is from their wiki page and their dept website. Anyone from that area or the school itself that can give me some insight on their program/school/area?

pdxlady1, I've also been accepted into Syracuse! This was my first acceptance as well, and I am a Canadian applicant, so if anyone does have any information about Syracuse that would be great!! Are you planning to go to the open house later this month?

  10. Hahah, I think they were sent through Canada post, although I'm not entirely sure.. My school prepares the transcripts and then mails them out themselves after 5 business days. I do have the receipt and they do have it listed as being sent in their system as well. But, Dalhousie insists they don't have them and my school won't take responsibility for it, so I've already gone ahead and paid the charges for a courier to deliver them. It's just unfortunate that it could have affected my chances for admission last year.

I have transcripts from a second institution as well and the two copies were sent on different dates and apparently Dalhousie only received one of those copies as well.. So I really don't have any idea what is going on. But at least for that school, they are covering the charges for a courier.

How did you send them last year? Do you have a receipt from your school saying they sent them? If you can track it down you might be able to say that they have to send them for free because they didn't get there last year.

Also--- DO NOT USE CANADA POST!!!!!! I'd rather cut off my own legs and have them run my mail across the country then use Canada post.

  11. I just heard from Dalhousie regarding my transcripts. I had been waitlisted last year and so at that time (in May), I had sent out my final grades. This year, since we are able to reuse documents, I notified them that I would be reusing those transcripts. Now I am finding out that they never received my final grades... This is extremely disappointing considering that could have affected being accepted off the waitlist last year. I even verified with the administration at my school about the day it was sent last year, but Dalhousie still didn't have it on record. Now I have to incur the charges of using a courier to send them again.

  12. I'm thinking it will be after the 28th that any waitlisters will hear back from Dal.

Not sure if this is helpful but deposits for accepted students are due April 29th so I'm guessing you'll hear definitively after that!

Dal only accepts 24 people so I can't see the list being longer than ~15 people (maybe less? ), but I'm just speculating I actually have no idea.

Thanks for the info! I was also wondering if anyone knew if schools (Dal) accept any further information from references (such as that I have gained quite a bit more hours with a SLP since January). I don't think that they would accept anymore information, but my parents keep trying to push me to do something of the sort . I had indicated in the forms that I would be continuing to volunteer, so I figured that would be sufficient (also since they have the contact info, I figured that they would just contact them directly if needed).

  13. I've read that some people have rejected their admission to Dalhousie and I was just wondering if anyone has been removed off the waiting list yet? I am contemplating on starting a directed studies project for the summer, but I just wanted to see if the list has moved at all, or if anyone has heard of the length of the list.

    Any info would be great!

    Thanks!

  14. Does anyone have any information about the waitlist at Dal from previous years? They will not provide me with any information and it's driving me crazy!! Any information would be great!

I would love to know also!

SLP333, have you heard a response after you sent in the confirmation for staying on the waitlist? I sent an email to Noriko, after faxing my confirmation. I just wanted to confirm that they received my fax, but I haven't received a response (my fax machine said it went through, but I just want to make sure).

  15. Hi letsgo

It sounds like you have some great experience already! I'm not sure what your other stats are regarding GPA and such, but I definitely think that doing a mission trip would be a good idea, for a variety of reasons. I was accepted to UofT this year and I have some international experience at a high school in Tanzania so maybe that helped? I may also suggest that you gain some experience working with a population other than children this year, perhaps in a geriatric setting? I think this would make your application very well rounded and it would show a lot of diversity in your experience. This is something that was suggested to me by the faculty members at the info session last year.

Hope this helps and best of luck!

Thanks for the response atz1106, I really appreciate it. My subGPA is 3.65, (I am currently enrolled in two other courses - one of which is the prerequisite for Anatomy and Physiology; so I'm not sure if this could have prevented me from being accepted or waitlisted this year). But that is a great suggestion, I will definitely look into working in a geriatric setting.

How did you go about gaining your international experience? Is there a particular organization that you would recommend?

  16. Congrats to all those who have been accepted, but for those who haven't, I'm in the same boat. This was my first year applying, but it's still very discouraging. I'm just waiting to go home for a good cry.

For those who have been accepted, I was wondering what other experience you may have. I am working in two different research labs (cognition/natural behaviour and an infant development/ language lab), and I have been volunteering with a SLP since October. My past jobs have not been with children per say, but I have worked for various attractions where I would interact with children and families often. I've always been interested in some kind of mission trip to help those in other countries with English. But, I was just wondering what you may suggest to help my application to stand above the rest next year.

  17. My application was rejected for Western, but I was wondering whether they tell you if you have been waitlisted... the email didn't specify and the student center just said that my app wasn't accepted. I'm still waiting for UofT and Dal, but I'm a bit discouraged already. How will you know if you

If you've been wait-listed for Toronto, how will you find out? (email, letter)
