  1. I got the flu. Never thought that was a good waiting strategy, but I was so sick, I couldn't think about my grad apps for two days. It was heaven....
  2. That's definitely true. Philadelphia is cheap to live in, as cities go. South Philly is a lot of fun and great, cheap housing. Get a bike or a SEPTA pass and you're good to go.
  3. Agree that the honors program is worth while for reasons mentioned by OP, BUT which honors program is important. My school offers 3 honors programs: 1 class oriented, 1 research oriented, and 1 major oriented. I think spending more energy in honors programs related to your department of interest is ultimately most beneficial. I say this because I did one honors program at my school that required a lot of extra courses that were in no way related to my program of study and ultimately sucked time away from completing my major. Guess what I mean to say is, look for honors programs but if you are facing time constraints, go for the honors program most related to your field of study. Plus look at grad classes. The more preparation the better.
  4. If the practice tests were paper tests as I'd guess they were, the questions are all weighted equally. But in the computer based GRE, the first ten or so questions carry the most weight, so if you plan to retake you should spend more time on those questions. That might explain the discrepancy.... (Wish I'd realized the weighting of questions before I took the GRE)
  5. I created one as well for my programs, I included a cover page, with a brief introduction to myself, then used the rest of the page as an index so they knew what was included in my application with a brief explanation about the materials (context of my writing sample, etc.) I think it can definitely help, or at least facilitate receipt of your app materials.
  6. Right, thanks a lot. You guys are the best!
  7. I filled out all my applications, was all set to hit the submit button, when I realized that I had forgotten/neglected to mention a publication(ish). I worked on a project freshman year and did data coding, ran regressions, and cleaning/bibliography creation. I never mentioned this in my CV, but should I? The professor thanked me in acknowledgments, but I'm not a co-author. Is it worth it?
  8. I know a little bit about the program. I one of my sociology professors was a visiting professor from Temple emphasizing sociology of education, fittingly enough. I know that Temple's program is fairly low ranked, but the school has been on a growth spurt recently, and the professor I took a class with was pretty interesting, her specialty was race and higher education. However, I do also know that Temple is in a pretty bad part of Philadelphia and a lot of students who live in the area are unhappy with the campus security. I am not sure how much of a concern this is for you, but just something to keep in mind.
  9. Thanks a lot, yeah I'll check it out!
  10. Hi there, I'm fairly new to this site, but I could use some advice. I'm interested in quantitative sociology, I find methods fascinating, but I am having some difficulty finding sociology departments specializing in quantitative methods outside of demography centers. Substantively, most interested in medical sociology and reporting of sensitive information. My stats if that helps... 3.63/3.89 (in major) top 10 university, strong sociology department Honors Sociology Major/Political Science Major 2 University Honors Programs - 1 w/ summer grant funding 2 years research working on quantitative research studies. 3 grad classes taken in field so far GREs 760Q/ 590V/5AW (Verbal is terrible, I know!) LORS - 1 good from post doc/supervisor of research, 1 AMAZING from thesis adviser who is also well known and respected in field, 1 Unknown- should be good SOP - Pretty strong. Everyone and their mother has read it Writing Sample- Senior thesis proposal. I am excited about it... So far, I've applied to: UPenn Penn State Vanderbilt Brown University of Michigan University of Wisconsin University of Arizona So the question....should I apply to more schools? Any program suggestions? This is last minute but I got paranoid that I hadn't applied widely enough.
