Ladies, what type of bag or purse do you use for school?
S_Colorado replied to Student88's topic in Officially Grads
I'm going to be walking the mile or two to campus most likely, and maybe even possibly biking. I've never biked anywhere before but it is very popular in Boulder. Because of that, I definitely want a backpack that can carry my laptop, maybe an extra pair of shoes. Maybe something like this http://www.thenorthface.com/catalog/sc-gear/sweeper-backpack.html. I'm going to be meeting with patients during clinical sessions so I will want some sort of tote I imagine to carry during those sessions to hold my materials. Does anyone know a tote that could be pack down into a backpack and then used during the day while I am on campus or in the clinic? -
Disciplinary Record
S_Colorado replied to CSallday's topic in Statement of Purpose, Personal History, Diversity
Yes all the applications have one. Check with your under grad university's office of conduct. Minor infractions or warnings may not show up on any sort of disciplinary records and therefore are not disclosed to inquiring universities. You do have to explain any disciplinary records and I would think that would be your place to explain the situation. If you can get a copy of the records first so that you can speak to the specifics addressed in those records, it would be advantageous I think. -
I'm anxious about the wait too but checked with Raul and he said it should be a few weeks before we hear from the university. That seems like so long! I have been looking at houses on craigslist as they come up but I can't afford to go look at places until June. It seems like most of the houses are not pre-leases and are instead available now. I'm hoping that the university gets back to me quickly so I can get access to Ralphie's List and look at places on there too. I hope everyone visiting soon has so much fun!

That is a tough decision. My thought would be to leave both dogs. They have been living there happily for the past 4 years. Splitting them up would not be my recommendation. If your family loves them both, they have a great home. If you get through 6 months of your program and you really are missing them, then you can change your mind and bring one out. But ultimately the choice is yours. I've struggled with this in a different way but my dog has been living with me and my parents for the last few years as I have been getting ready for school. He loves them so much. He is definitely my dog , and in no way a family dog, except that he lives around them but I am the one who walks and feeds him and he goes on long trips with me. I know he is going to be really sad leaving them though. I'm hoping to find housing with other roommates so that he doesn't feel lonely in the house.

I'm definitely coming for the MA-SLP program in, I'd say fall but classes start in August, so more like this summer! I'm really excited. I got to meet some people at the open house and everyone seemed so nice and wonderful. Aurora, have you been to Colorado before? Were you able to visit Boulder? Also, I posted in the CU Boulder thread that I'm looking for people who might want to potentially be roommates in case anyone else is interested. I'm also just eager to make some friends and hiking partners!

Aww I'm so glad to here about you taking your horse with you! My friend just moved away with her horses and before that, they had moved to and from Thailand. I love to hear about people who have horses as family members. My dog is coming with me, no matter what. Part of looking at schools was deciding what program schedules would work, and also how close to campus I could afford to live. I work part time at a lesson barn right now, and so my horsey family is staying at the barn but I'm hoping I will find a new horsey family in my new town. My dog (and me!) would be so sad not to have horses around.

I'm going to CU Boulder as well! I am very excited to be headed out there this summer. I can't wait to start packing! I am looking for a roommate or two with whom to share a large apartment or a house. I am a quiet roommate who loves to cook and hike. I have a wonderful 4 year old medium-sized pound puppy who is very well trained. I walk him a few hours a day and plan to go on lots of hikes when we are living in Boulder. I'd love to find other graduate students who love dogs and animals, and maybe even have a dog or cat of their own. My cat died last winter and my dog has been missing having another animal in the house. I do come home to quietly relax or study so I'd like roommates who do the same. If you are interested, message me and maybe we can connect on facebook.

There seems to be lots of cat friendly housing. I've never done apartment/house hunting from a distance so the whole thing seems a little scary. I can't move there until the end of June or early July so I'm hoping there will still be apartments or houses available then.

I don't know how long! One of the current students said that someone might let us use their account to get on Ralphie's List to check things out but I haven't contacted them to ask if that was really true. I might send an email into Raul to ask. Have you looked at the on campus graduate housing? What did you think of it?

After bombing the GMAT, I decided to really put in a lot of hours into the GRE. I studied about 10 hours a week, broken up into chunks, for about 4 months. I used books with lots of problem sets and also took about 4 paper tests and 4 computer based tests. I made a huge amount of flash cards for the vocabulary. I did the ones where words are grouped together by similar meanings. It really helped. I found the list in the back of the ETS Official GRE book. For the math, I really had to reteach myself a lot of things. I had a friend who had a CSET Mathematics book and used the reteaching parts of that for specific areas in which I had issues.

I decided on CU as well! During the open house weekend, I went around town and talked to my friend who went to CU for her undergrad. I've decided to focus my search directly east of campus and to the south east. Ideally I want to be within a 15 minute walk of the SLHS building. I loved the Frasier Meadows area, as well as East Park. There are some town homes and single family home rentals there. I was warned by a few people in Boulder that the area around the Hill, to the west of campus, can get really loud at night because of all the parties. I'd prefer somewhere more quiet. One of the things my friend mentioned was that there was significant water damage (due to the flooding last year) to a lot of the garden level apartments along the creek and to be extra careful when looking at apartments in that area, to make sure they were cleaned properly. Current students said they had luck with Ralphie's List so I am waiting to get my access to that and post a roommate ad. There does seem to be quite a bit of stuff on Craigslist as well but since I am coming with my dog, I want to make sure I have a really good fit with roommates and would prefer to live with other graduate students.

I was an out of field applicant and I have not completed any pre-reqs. I applied to 4 schools that would accept you without pre-reqs but some required them to be completed prior to enrollment. I also applied to two post-bacc programs. I ended up getting accepted into two of the MA/MS programs and ultimately decided on a program with a leveling year because I didn't want to rush through the pre-reqs by doing them online over the summer. My BA is way out of field (art history) but I have been working as an instructional aide at a school for children with ASDs for a few years. The two programs I got accepted at, as well as one that didn't accept me, told me that my recommendation letters as well as my GRE score were the things that put me on top of other applicants. The one that chose not to take me, said I would have been even more competitive if I had already completed the pre-reqs before applying. I put a lot of effort into my personal essay and into studying for the gre. My scores were in the 85-95 percentile range. I think that coming from out-of-field, you need to demonstrate a strong passion for the field and commitment to the program. If they only have 5 or 6 slots for people with no pre-reqs, they want to make sure that you already know the field and have no doubts. That is where I think your recommendation letters and your essay come in. The way I looked at it, I figured it was going to take me three years to complete grad school, and so I applied to a few dream programs as a stretch with the logical back up plan of going into a post-bacc. I was lucky enough to be accepted into one of those dream programs, but I think anything you can do to make yourself more competitive is great.

Forward Stride has an SLP on staff. Clackamass Speech says they use Equine Movement as a treatment tool. I found the therapists listed on the AHA website. http://www.americanhippotherapyassociation.org/hippotherapy/find-a-therapist/ http://forwardstride.org/ and http://clackamasspeech.com/ Hope that helps!
