  1. I, too, would like some good information concerning Charlottesville's neighborhoods and their comparative suitability for graduate student living. Anyone?
  2. He means it's ALSO about going to a "top ivy" for undergrad.
  3. I've started sending "No thank you" letters and it's just... breaking my heart. I only applied to schools that I'd be absolutely ecstatic to attend. My preferences for one school over others are so minute, so it's hard to say "good-bye" before I've even said "hello" to places I'm sure I'd have been very happy. I'm sure they totally don't care, but they at least act disappointed in their responses to my letters, and that makes it even harder. Anyone else having any sort of existential crisis over this trying conclusion to a year-long struggle?
  4. Well, it totally depends on what sort of issues in the History of Higher Education you want to explore. Schools that are notably good for all sorts of History of Education topics are Harvard and Columbia.
  5. I don't know of any departments specifically dedicated to the History of Higher Education, but there certainly are such subspecialties in Schools of Education. I wrote my Master's Thesis on a similar topic, though not focusing on the US. I can tell you that there are dozens and dozens of historians who study or have studied this field.
  6. Confused, you might have already said this, but what's your subfield?
  7. Luvalicious, You had previously heard you were accepted via email, I presume?

Oh yes, definitely. UNC offered me $300 towards traveling there, and UVA $500. I worry that if I wait much longer, I won't make it to RDU(Raleigh-Durham) airport for less than $300, though... I'm desperately waiting for UVA to get back to my partner (who's applying in PoliSci) about funding, travel, and recruitment weekends. Ideally, we'd like to go at the same time.

Eek! That's a pretty persuasive horror story.

I've been waiting on my last three schools to get back to me before I make any firm plans for the few weekends left before April 15th. But the days are winding down, ticket prices are going up, and my mailbox and inbox have been woefully empty. Should I go ahead and assume I'm rejected at these last three, and buy tickets for visits to the schools where I know I'm accepted?
  11. I got an email from them today saying that my formal acceptance letter was just put into the mail, after being misdirected. So, I have no idea about funding or a recruitment weekend. I don't plan to matriculate there, though, so neither's really an issue.
  12. My online status was changed to accepted about a week ago now, but I still haven't received any email or letter concerning my apparent acceptance. I'm not sure UT has their act together.
  13. My UNC acceptance was a personalized letter from the History Director of Graduate Studies. They recommend visiting one of the first two weekends of April and offered $300 towards buying a plane ticket out there.
