  1. First day of summer job with my Masters supervisor was uneventful, but smooth :). Let's hope that keeps up...

  2. I guess it's time to resurrect this thread! I'm a concert pianist and violinist! I'm currently trying to get my diploma for piano performance through Canada's Royal Conservatory of Music. I also have to perform a piano concerto at the end of September (a month into graduate school). I compose musical numbers when I can and I love to play by ear! (I have perfect pitch). I hope I can keep all that as I go into grad school!
  3. I'm going to start my MsC Biology at McMaster University (Ontario). As a potential supervisor at University of Toronto's Pharmacology Program said, "Given that you're from a liberal arts university, it's good to gather research experience through the Masters program before focusing on Pharmacology." With that in mind, I'm going to be working with a bacterial gene called Rpos, which is encoded to help bacteria cope with environmental stresses. The lab will employ bioinformatics to study gene variations in E. coli in water samples at the Niagara Region. I'm already hoping to add a clinical aspect to all this somehow, and I've already read a few papers to get some idea to that end! I know a lot of PCR and bacterial culturing will be in store as I start my Masters. In a broader sense, being involved with research in the medical sciences is really cool. As for specifics, I'm not too sure yet. I have pharmacology and toxicology, biomedical sciences, and general medical sciences at my sights.
  4. You're most certainly not the only one! I'm actually very nervous about starting graduate school in the fall! I heard a lot of stories about busyness and a significant change in life and it unnerved me. But reading through the rest of the posts on other threads here have calmed me a bit. It sounds like even though biology experiments will force wonky hours and a lot of work, that it can still be balanced with time to relax. I try my best to also recall the fact that if you're going to graduate school, then it's a huge accomplishment. In many cases, high grades and successful research experiences (in some capacity) are required to be accepted. Plus, I also recall the times I felt terrible when I couldn't find a supervisor. To see one who wanted me in and to work on his project is also an honour. In many cases, graduate supervisors only pick 1-3 prospective students at most out of a pool of 100 students to choose from. Sure I'm still nervous, even when grad school's 3 months away, but perspective is really important to calming fears and to do well once it starts.
  5. Wow... this thread hasn't been posting by anyone... Well I'm here to change that! I'm going to head to Mac this fall for a Masters in Biology. Will be working with bacterial genes with my supervisor and I already have a part time summer job lined up with him! I hope there's more Mac people for this fall!
