  1. nah same, just wanted to make sure it's not "under review" for others for some reason as "submitted" sounds, well, lame
  2. I did the same thing to *all my schools*. Submitted them on the 13th and they've finally gotten in. I talked to admissions and it's not a huge deal.
  3. Ok, so not the admissions department? You don't think emailing the grad coordinator/chair is too direct? Thanks for the advice. Awesome, thanks.
  4. Ok, so not the admissions department? You don't think emailing the grad coordinator/chair is too direct? Should I actually include an updated CV, or just let them know of the development? Thanks for the advice.
  5. I just received word a publication submission has been accepted by a law journal (I'm applying for sociology of law). Should I let departments know? If so, how? Maybe it's too late to matter?
  6. Is there any particular reason state schools make decisions earlier (so it seems)?
  7. So I called up two departments. One was pretty rude and the admissions person just said it's been too soon to know if my scores were there, but when I wanted to talk about the overall situation she just didn't seem to care. The other department's person was incredibly helpful. She basically said that the process is secretive and they totally could've reviewed my application with only the score report, but that she didn't know. She didn't think it was a fatal flaw, but that it might delay my review or "put a small smudge on an otherwise perfectly polished shoe," and said when my score comes in they'll try to match it as quickly as possible. Anyone know how quickly it takes for scores to come in? ETS says they all arrived yesterday, but who knows. I also sent follow up emails to all departments. Such a bummer since I literally had an otherwise completed application submitted in the middle of October, and then checked my application status for the first time and went "whooooops." My GRE scores are pretty strong (only ~70% in quant but above close to a perfect score in verbal), and I think my overall application is really good (I only applied to a small number of the top programs). I don't feel like waiting an entire year to apply again. Here's to hoping I get decisions eventually, one way or the other.
  8. Phew, thanks. I thought maybe the schools would be sticklers and say I missed the deadline so my app didn't count! That would be....less than ideal. I'll call them tomorrow and let them know, thanks
  9. Seriously, it's that bad?? Even though I had everything else plus an uploaded score report? Shit.
  10. Hey, so I'm a huge idiot and I need some advice. I submitted all my apps in October/November and then just sat around with a smile waiting. Now I realized I never sent my GRE scores, that I just uploaded the PDF of my score report. I sent them in yesterday and it says the schools received them today. How bad is this for my application chances? Will they have not even looked at my application without the official score in? Should I call them to make sure they all get them rather than waiting for the checkmark that says they did? Halp!
  11. Oh wow, that's great to hear. Because of small class sizes I wasn't sure if this was common or not. Thanks!
  12. So I get that your GRE score will generally be used for a cut-off, and that if the cutoff is x, x-1 is usually thrown out and x+1 makes the cut. My question is: is the score pretty much *just* used for that, or does it make a tangible difference in chances of admission if you have x+[high number] rather than x+[low number]?
  13. Brandeis sociology is begging me to apply (constant emails and fee waiver offers, etc). Are they any good in Marxism/economic sociology/sociology of law/inequality?
  14. Any idea how long it takes (on average) for programs to get back? Just submitting my applications now.
  15. I think I can definitely get it up significantly if I practice, but I don't think I can match that verbal score again. Do programs take your top scores if you take it multiple times? I'm also an MBA, so I've taken statistics and quantitative finance/economics courses, so I'm confident in my overall quant abilities.
  16. Ahhh bummer, sorry about that. I'll take your advice to heart then! When do the applications actually open up? I went on one site that said the app was closed for the year. But when can I see it again lol
  17. Really helpful, thanks everyone for the replies. One more nagging question: how many LOR are typically needed for a Soc phd application? 2-3? And when do the Fall 2016 Applications open up for most schools?
  18. ...and it seems like I have no idea how to interpret these scores. I'm in law school, where data on LSAT scores is precise and fairly predictive (and importantly, abundant!). I have no idea what to make of these numbers for a Sociology PhD: Quant: 157 Verbal: 167 I know the verbal score is good, but is the quant score too low to keep me out of good programs? Not including any other factors, how do these numbers stand among the top programs? Thanks in advance.
