  1. To any of you who are interested, here is an excellent list that shows which programs are producing the best in field of Arabic and other Semitic Languages. http://foreign-language-colleges.com/arabic-and-semitic Enjoy!
  2. Ok, so I got my official admissions letter today from Indiana University-Bloomington, but I have not heard any information about fellowship decisions. Is there anyone else on this forum who has been admitted to IU-B and nominated for a fellowship of some kind? If so, have you received a decision on the fellowship?
  3. I actually saw those notices appear about 2 weeks after applied. I contacted the department about it, but I was never able to get in touch with anyone for clarification on the matter.
  4. That is pretty crazy and sad altogether, for Dr. Dimitri Gutas is someone I hope fairs well a mist this turmoil within his department. His work on Avicenna is exceptional. The field of Islamic philosophy is a very small group, so I hope we don't loose one of the best, due to some scandal brought about by others. Hopefully, he will migrate away from the program and find a new home. However, I am sure retirement is the option he is weighing at this point. As far as myself, I am quite thankful that I am not going to Yale. This would have been a nightmare.
  5. Also, you should note that the Lingua Latina series continues after the initial text. Ensure that you check the publisher's website and Amazon for their selection of numerous texts. The second book, Roma Aeterna, commences your reading of classical authors like Caesar, Vergil, Cicero, Livy, etc. If you can read Cicero, you will be in excellent shape. If you can read Tacitus, few can do so well, then you will run circles around your colleagues. http://www.amazon.com/Roma-Aeterna-Pars-Lingua-Latina/dp/1585103144/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1423931269&sr=8-1&keywords=lingua+latina+roma+aeterna
  6. I taught myself Latin using Hans Orberg's Lingua Latina program. If you can read classical Latin, medieval Latin is a pretty easy, for many of the steadfast rules were relaxed over time. If you start the book now, you will be fine come Fall. I recommend you get the college companion text by Jeanne Marie Neumann with it. This is the natural method approach to learning Latin. However, if you desire the grammar base approach, I would suggest that you pick either Latin: An Intensive Course by Moreland and Fleischer or Learn to Read Latin by Keller and Russell. Wheelock, in my opinion, is not as good as these aforementioned texts. http://www.amazon.com/Lingua-Latina-per-Illustrata-Pars/dp/158510423X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1423930205&sr=8-1&keywords=Lingua+Latina(GET THE HARDCOVER, PAPERBACK is JUNK!) http://www.amazon.com/Learn-Read-Latin-Text-Workbook/dp/0300109377/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1423930257&sr=8-2&keywords=Learn+to+Read+Latin http://www.amazon.com/Latin-Intensive-Floyd-L-Moreland/dp/0520031830/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1423930285&sr=8-1&keywords=latin+an+intensive+course
  7. I have not received an email of any kind from the department. I guess I will contact them on Monday.
  8. I have checked my status everyday on the application website, and I have yet to see anything come across that notifies me of anything.
  9. Earlier last year, I contacted Notre Dame about their program, inquiring about their faculty in Islamic Studies. The director of the Medieval Institute, Dr. Constable, who passed away a few months later, followed up and strongly suggested that I apply to their program. This program is truly enticing, but my area of interest requires that I learn Persian, which is not offered at Notre Dame. I do not mind teaching myself, for that is how I usually learn another language anyway. I just needed more information about job placement with such a degree, for I will need to be able to market that I am suitable to teach in a Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations department. Although I have my apprehensions, I applied at Dr. Constable's request, and I am still waiting to hear back from the admissions committee.
  10. Alright Medievalists, I have a question pertaining to finding a job with a Medieval Studies PhD. program. With this particular degree, will it be quite attractive to employers when applying for jobs, or will it hinder the process all together? I just wonder where one would end up, meaning which department at a specific school, if they were to undertake such a course of study. Is it all dependent upon which area of emphasis you concentrate on? Do enlighten me on this matter. Thanks.
  11. Thus far, I have been rejected by Yale, which I thought would occur. However, I must say that I am not upset about it at all, since there is a major scandal in that NELC department: http://yaledailynews.com/blog/2014/02/06/scandal-still-strains-egyptology/ http://yaledailynews.com/blog/2014/03/26/nelc-department-in-dire-straits/ I wish I had known about this earlier. If so, I would not have even applied to the program. However, I have been contacted by Indiana University-Bloomington NELC, pertaining to a fellowship nomination. Considering the area of interests that I have, this program will be the best fit for me. I wish you all the best in this application cycle. The competition is pretty stiff this year and funding is limited. Cheers!
  12. Aliriza, I believe your language skills will give you the added boost that you need. There is much to be stated about one's language abilities. I wish you the best in your endeavor.
  13. Hello, I've decided to commence this thread a bit early to get as many as possible to exchange ideas and information about the up coming NELC PhD application cycle. Currently, I am at a state school pursuing an M.A. in Classics. I choose this path to acquire the relevant research languages pertinent to my interests: Islamic Philosophy, Nizari Ismailis, and so forth. I have procured a 4.0 GPA at my program. I obtained my B.A. in Middle Eastern Studies at a private school. This program incorporated a study abroad portion that allowed me to travel to Jordan. My undergraduate GPA is a 3.82. Languages: Arabic, Latin, Greek, and French Awards/Honor Societies: 4 year Academic Merit Scholarship, Phi Kappa Phi, Golden Key International Honor Society, Graduate Teaching Assistantship, and Graduate Part-Time Instructor position. Perspective Programs: Yale Chicago SOAS University of London Oxford University Indiana-Bloomington UT-Austin Princeton Havard Michigan Who else will be applying in the upcoming cycle?
