Hi, I just retyped everything -
Any insight into these departments?

Sorry it's messed up! I copied it from a spreadsheet. I don't have time to fix it right now... -

Columbia, anthro UC Santa Barbara, anthro Urbana-Champaign, anthro Notre Dame, anthro Toronto, anthro McGill, anthro (the only MA) UC Davis, anthro UC Santa Cruz, anthro UVA, anthro WUSTL, anthro Maryland, anthro Yale, anthro MSU – Graduate Specialization in Animal Studies Social Science and Humanities Perspectives (this is a maybe)

Here's my list so far: Columbia, Sociocultural anthropology, PhD UC Santa Barbara, anthropology MA/PhD Urbana Champaign, anthropolgy, PhD Toronto, anthropology, PhD McGill, MA anthropology (must have MA for PhD) UC Davis, anthropology PhD (MA on the way) UC Santa Cruz, PhD anthropology UVA, anthropology PhD University of Washington, PhD in anthropology University of Maryland, anthropology PhD Yale, anthropology PhD The New School, MA anthropology (all new students must enter through MA) MSU – Graduate Specialization in Animal Studies Social Science and Humanities Perspectives UT-Austin, PhD anthropology Any other suggestions? The schools on this list have at least one faculty member who's interested in human-animal stuff. From this list, Washington has the most profs who do environment-human stuff. Emory, on my "cut" list, has a number of people who deal with agrarian studies. Not sure how related that it (I'm interested in human-animal relations). I want to apply to 12 programs, so as my list stands it's a tad long.

I'm interested in how people perceive animals as, for example, human-pest, human-child, human-food, etc. I made up those binaries, but hopefully you get the idea. I'm interested in how humans construct and define animal categories and how they perceive their relationships with the constructed categories. What they're used for. I would like to ask questions like "what makes this particular animal edible in this context? What makes this one good for keeping in the home?" I wouldn't say no to environmental studies, but I don't have any type of science background under my belt.

Human-animal relationships PhD programs anyone?
Ilikekitties replied to Ilikekitties's topic in Anthropology Forum
^I have. My profs are urging me to apply to programs outside of anthro. The thing with animal studies at MSU though is that it is not a program in itself, but something that supplements a program. I'm not sure about that, but I'm open to it... -

My prof sent me a link to Tufts' vet program, but I'd need 2 semesters of bio for that. I have not taken any college-level science or math. -
Hi all. I am a current undergrad student who studies anthropology (human-animal relationships being my broad interest) and a faculty member suggested that I look into philosophy programs as well as anthro programs because the questions that I'm asking may be more suited to philosophy. I'm "researching" programs/faculty right now....any suggestions come to mind of philosophers who mainly study animals? I'm interested in the moral "status" of animals.

Also, I'll clarify: I'm interested in an anthropology PhD program. -

Specifically human perceptions of and interactions with livestock and companion animals. I'm interested in how these categories are defined, constructed, and also what makes certain animals edible or non-edible and what makes them suitable for companionship. My geographical area of interest, if I needed one, would be Latin America. So far I am interested in people from UVA, Columbia, Toronto, Washington, The New School, McGill, Santa Cruz, Davis, UIUC is particularly interesting, and Yale has someone who might be a match. However, these schools have at the most two people who do cultural animal work in anthropology, so I don't know of any departments that I would fit. I'm kind of frustrated because the vast majority of people I've read are from the UK, and I don't think that it would be feasible to leave the US, let alone go to Canada. I've used AnthroSource to search for faculty, but it seems like my interests just aren't that popular. I will apply in the fall....gah Idk if I can do this.

How much does "prestige" of internship matter?
Ilikekitties replied to Ilikekitties's topic in Anthropology Forum
Yeah, makes sense. I know a few people who will be summer interns at the Field Museum, so I'm wondering what their experience will be like. -

Good advice! -
For internships? Does an internship at (insert famous museum) look better than (insert lesser-known local museum?)
-
^ok, currently my more specific interest is people's perceptions of livestock and companion animals and how these categories are constructed. I am interested in how the animals in these categories are valued (for example, why is it *typically* okay to eat a cow but not a dog?) That's just something that I made up for an example. Yes, I will take a look at who's cited on Odgen's article! Thanks!

How important is the GRE to PhD programs?
Ilikekitties replied to Ilikekitties's topic in Anthropology Forum
^ have a Princeton Review book in the States (I'm abroad this semester). I've used it a little. I brought some Magoosh stuff with me and I'm enrolled in a Cambridge thing online. *Doing* it is the problem I've kind of given up tbh because I couldn't get the practice scores that I wanted. -

Ok, so the fact of the matter is that my verbal score will probably be higher than my quant score. I'm predicting that my math score will be in the 140's and that my V will be in 150's. Since I will be going into cultural anthro, should I spend more time on V or Q? Do I need to spend any time on Q? -

If I scored below average on all sections, would that significantly reduce my chances of being admitted somewhere? Honestly I'd rather go somewhere that values my hard work and research experience/interests over a few numbers. -

^dang. And they're gonna get a writing sample in the application anyway, right?
