  1. It doesn't seem weird to me at all. In fact, when I was visiting a school this past spring, a current grad student (in her 4th year) invited me out for coffee. At the end she handed me her card and told me to feel free to contact her with any questions about the program. I'm assuming the school provided them since it had the school seal on it.

  2. I know this thread has been a bit dead lately, but I was accepted into SUNY: UAlbany's Criminal Justice PhD program for this fall (YAY!), and I'm trying to get my Life in Order. I'll be living on a stipend through the school, so I definitely need to be cost conscious. I'm going to try to go out to Albany in early July to check out apartments and the like, but I'm not sure I'll be able to financially swing it. Thus, I might be going in blind for my rooming situation. From what I understand, I'll be MOSTLY at the downtown campus, and only at the main campus if/when I teach undergrad courses, so it's my understanding (and could be TOTALLY wrong) that I want to live on Western/Washington area.

I'm not TOO picky on noise (I'm from MSU in East Lansing, so you kind of get used to LOTS of bar/partying/construction sounds at all time, and learn to sleep through it), but would like to be walking distance to the downtown campus. I WILL have a car, but would prefer to use it as little as possible to save on gas. I also have cats, and as such, am REALLY hoping to find someplace pet friendly (which might be getting a little TOO detailed :-)). I keep looking on craigslist for apartments, and rent.com, but feel like I'm not really finding much. Does anyone have any suggestions on places to live in the area, or a strategy to go about finding an apartment without seeing it first? Or is it mostly guess-and-check?

    Thanks!

I'm going to be starting at Albany in the fall too and I've actually already found a place and signed a lease. I had great luck on the university's off campus house website: http://www.albany.edu/housing/offcampus.shtml. If you click on "Go to the Housing search page" you will be taken to a screen and will have to enter your email address and password. (I had received info in the mail about how to set this up). I just found an apartment that sounded good and had a friend of the family who lives in Albany go take a look at it and send me pictures. Then the landlord mailed me a lease and everything was set! It was really easy and pretty stress free.

  3. There are a lot of things to consider here. How far you are into the coming out process in general, where you are location-wise (Southern U.S., New England, west coast..), etc. Of course some social climates are more accepting than others.

For me, it was very clear from my personal statement that I identify as queer, so in that respect it's a relief that I can go in without the burden of having to "come out" to the department.

Most likely there will be gay grad students wherever you go, so you won't have to worry about being the only one. Many schools also have gay grad student groups. I met several queer students when I went on one campus visit who were eager to tell me anything I wanted to know about the community.

It's always a personal choice whether to come out in any situation, but in my opinion it would be a heavy burden to have to stay closeted for 5-6 years in grad school.

  4. Hmm.. I saw people had received decisions by calling and speaking to the Director/grad secretary. I just called and asked and they said final decisions would be made in 1-2 weeks and that they had no more information beyond that. This is so frustrating!

  5. Hello! I grew up in the Albany area, and although I did not attend SUNY Albany, I'm very familiar with it. South Manning Street has some nice inexpensive apartments, and is less than 2 miles from SUNY. If you are willing to drive a bit further (about 15 minutes), look in Colonie, Latham, and Niskayuna. These are suburban towns with nice neighborhoods. Stay away from Lark Street (club scene) and Arbor Hill (gangs). Hope this helps!

Hello! I also am most likely going to be heading to Albany in the fall.

swalroth - This may not be your area of expertise, but I was wondering if you knew anything about the queer/lesbian scene in Albany. After living in DC for 2 years and having a wonderful community, I'm a little worried about moving to a much smaller place. Do you by any chance have any insight into the general attitude towards the queer community? Thanks!

  6. I just received an email rejection. :( It was a form email but did say "Dear [my first and last name]". It was signed by the chair of the graduate committee, Victor Nee, but came from a different email address.

  7. Hi! Another acceptance here! I'm the one who was bitching about being rejected by maryland. Well, im a criminology major so defintely am big into that, as well as gender studies and urban studies. Congrats to those who have been admitted...I wonder when we'll find out about a potential open house.

Have you by any chance heard any word on a visting weekend for Albany or received any other information? I have heard nothing besides the initital acceptance email.

  8. Has anyone else heard any word from UMass Amherst? Their website says it takes 5-6 weeks after the January 15th deadline to release decisions. We're now at the end of week 7... I emailed them twice, but have gotten no response. Does anyone know anything?

  9. I'm currently frustrated with one school whose website says admissions decisions will be released at the end of February, and who has not (as far as I know) contacted anyone. The same school is also apparently opposed to responding to emails. I tried emailing back in the fall with a question about a writing sample and then a few days ago about the timeline for admissions decisions and both times....nothing. Grrrr so frustrating!!!

  10. I would agree with the other posters that fit is pretty much the most important thing. I applied to several schools thinking "well...there isn't exactly anyone there doing what I want to do, but maybe they'll find me unique/different/interesting". I was so, so wrong. (I even applied to a school where a professor I contacted told me not to bother applying because my research wasn't being done there). Pretty much a complete waste of time and money. Oh well...live and learn, right?

Foruntately I've been accepted to a school with full funding. Even though I guess it wasn't my "top choice", I knew from the very beginning it was by far my best fit. So I'm very, VERY happy.

  11. Would anyone like to try to start figuring out percentages and if this was a more difficult year?

Oregon got 135 applications for 8 spots. Does that mean they only made 8 offers? If so, that is a 6% acceptance rate for a school that ranks 57 in USNWR. Does anyone have numbers from other schools?

I'm not positive, but I would asasume '8 spots' means they have room for 8 students to matriculate. In that case they would accept several more than 8.

  12. Jumping on the school-thread bandwagon...

Congrats to those SUNY-Albany acceptances! I also just got an email saying four years of funding. I'm so excited!

For those accepted, what are your areas of specialization? I'm interested in gender, sexuality and queer theory.

  13. I applied and haven't heard anything yet either. eek!

You may have seen this but I was doing some sleuthing about UMD admits from last year and saw a thread about the Testudo site. You can go to this website: http://www.testudo.umd.edu/apps/gradapp/ . Then hit submit. Then in the second login area, where it says 'Former Student Access' you can type in your social security number under 'SID' (no hyphens or dashes) and your Date of birth (MMDDYY) under 'PIN'. It will bring up your application status. Mine has said "Pending decision" the whole time, but I keep checking it incessantly...

  14. Anyone heard anything from Cornell?

Would any of the people who have heard from Cornell mind providing any possible details?? Cohort size? Visiting weekend? Whether they're done releasing acceptances? Thanks!

  15. Oh, I'm glad I was not the only one surprised. I didn't think any news had gone out either.

My area of interest is gender, sexuality, race and culture. For my specific focus, I wanted to work with Dr. C Shawn McGuffey- he's got fascinating research interests. What about you?

McGuffey does seem to have some really interesting research! I mentioned working with Professor Hesse-Biber in my SOP, so we'll see. Good luck!

  16. Did anyone else get a cryptic email this morning that said something along the lines of "We have forwarded your application to our admissions committee in the Department of Sociology, and are in the midst of making the complex and difficult selections from among a large number of highly qualified applicants?" The timetable they are indicating is early March - does this mean I am on some kind of waiting list?

I just got the same email. I panicked at first when it came in becasue I remember seeing some responsed from Chicago yesterday. No idea what it means.

  17. I also applied but haven't hear anything yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I didn't think any news had gone out so I was kinda surprised to see that one posting on the results page.

karakiz--- if I can ask, what is your area of interest? I'm primarily focused on gender/sexuality/queer theory.
