  1. Hello everyone, I am really glad to see many people here. I will be starting my phd in applied and engineering physics this fall with interest in nano and devices. I am from Taiwan; I did my physics undergrad in NTU. I look forward to starting a new journey in Cornell. : ) Ithaca is a small but nice place based on my visit last month, still snowing heavily then. It seems that a car is a must-have, isn't it? Regarding the housing, do you recommend on-campus or off-campus? Thanks.
  2. Hello everyone, I am now in a dilemma of choosing between UCSB Materials and Cornell AEP. Both of them are one-year-fellowship provided PhD programs (they offered similar amount of stipend). I appreciate any idea and advice. < Concern 1 > UCSB's prestige is not on par with Cornell in general but its Materials program is among the top in the US. I have no idea how UCSB materials could make such a enormous progress in this 2 decades. I don't know if its high evaluation was merely resulted from the Nobel Laureates. < Concern 2 > I have visited both and professors in Cornell seemed to be more generous while UCSB didn't guarantee the funding after the first year. < Concern 3 > Cornell provides a wide range of research choices from MSE, ECE and ME departments but they don't have many opportunities in electronic structures and nano-devices as well as application. On the contrary, UCSB has more focused, industry-related and application-oriented researches in this area. < Concern 4 > The living expense in Santa Barbara is far more than that in Ithaca. I am wondering if the price matches the value of studying there. Weather is not my concern. How will you choose and what is your concern? Thanks in advance.
  3. Also greetings from Taiwan. Materials PhD. I did not make my decision yet but 95% will attend.
  4. What really surprised me was the missing IELTS score for MIT. I have triple checked the score status from the IELTS testing center. However, MIT just did not get it and ignored all my checking email. I got an 'incomplete application' even if I was into the second round. Nothing more surprising or shocking than this. Just like a well-prepared athlete who is injured before the final and losses.
  5. Just some suggestions if they can apply to your situation. 1. Call his/ her office directly. Professors are always busy especially it's near the end of the semester. They might not have time to check the email in person. 2. Knock the door or arrange an appointment. This is the best way to show your sincere. If email works, that's good. But usually, meeting face to face will always work. If they said they are willing to write the recommendation letter for you, it will be fine. I am still waiting for recommendation letters. : ) Good luck.
  6. Hi, this is another Taiwanese applying for admission to Harvard but different program. : ) As far as I know, the course number is the number on your transcript. I believe that the course name follows the number. For example, MATH 1201 Calculus You should enter "MATH1201" and that's what I did when filling out those forms for Harvard. They will track down every course on your transcript so just copy everything from it. Good luck
