Last minute funding from GWU--help with a big dilemma!
fsowannabe replied to Sandmole's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Hello Sandmole, I'm in a similar situation, I feel your pain! I don't have quite as much money from GW, but it would be about a $20k difference between the two programs. I visited both schools and was much more impressed with GPPI. I like the quant classes and the mandatory thesis... I tried to give GW another shot, even calling admissions and asking them to highlight what they thought were the major strengths of the program and I got a really unsatisfactory answer. I'm thinking I'll pay the extra $20k (average salaries of people coming out of GPPI in the field I want to work in were about $10k higher than GW) for the program I like better. However, I don't think you should walk away from free graduate school so for what's it's worth GW sounds like the best program for you. Good luck! -
I received an additional 5k, drop in the bucket but I visited last Monday and loved the people I met and the curriculum. I think that's where I'll be going this fall and I'm really feeling good about it!

Thanks for the input La Voz, I'm visiting Georgetown on Monday but don't have time to visit GWU, I appreciate the input. PM me if you ending up going to GWU, maybe we'll be classmates!

Mister, Thank you so much for the input. My experience with the administration was so horrible but the school does have such a great reputation and seems like a good deal. I appreciate the insight.

Nope, nyc

Also waitlisted. Letter came in the mail today

sure, I'll pm you.

I just received 24k at GWU. I'm also in at various other schools with minimal funding (Georgetown, Denver, Syracuse). I was not impressed by the admissions office when I visited, nor was I impressed with the current student that I met, and I left with a bad impression of the school. Does anyone have any thoughts or input into this program? I want to end up working in the Federal Government and I expressed interest in studying U.S. Foreign Policy towards development in Latin America. Any input is appreciated, I'm trying to not base my decision on a bad admissions experience.

SAIS (Washington, Nanjing, and Bologna)

I am also in the same boat. I check either campus, now I'm in at Bologna after saying I wanted to study American foreign policy and development policy towards Latin America. I don't know how that makes sense but I supposed it's my fault for checking the box... Seems like they just want to make money off of people at the Bologna campus but I could be way off. -

I was not a direct Bologna applicant, I (foolishly) checked the "consider me for both the DC and Bologna campuses" box. -

Do you know if we can change our campus? I was also admitted to Bologna, but it isn't an option for me... -

Undergraduate GPA: 3.67 Last 60 hours of Undergraduate GPA (if applicable): ??? Undergraduate Major: Sociology/Spanish GRE Quantitative Score: 730 GRE Verbal Score: 650 GRE AW Score: 5.0 Years Out of Undergrad (if applicable): 5 Years of Work Experience: 5 Describe Relevant Work Experience: Immigration Law, Governor of the State of Wisconsin (Leg/Policy and External Affairs), year abroad working for an NGO in Chile, Coordinator at a small private liberal arts college (Study Abroad, International Student Services and Diversity Initiatives) Strength of SOP (be honest, describe the process, etc): I focused on my policy experience and my international work experience. Took about a month to write, had about six people read them over including a few professors. Strength of LOR's (be honest, describe the process, etc): A few of the letters were so-so, a few were generic, at least two were stellar (I used about 8 different recommendors because I felt that different people were more appropriate for certain programs/schools) Other: It's really going to come down to money for me, I'm hoping that I get a FLAS or a largeĀ® scholarship at some of the schools I haven't heard from yet. I'm not willing to pay 100k for a 2 year master's degree only to work for the Federal Government for the rest of my life earning less than 70k a year... On a side note I'm one step away from passing the foreign service exam process so I may have some interesting decisions in April. Good luck to all!

I think I turned my app in around Jan. 10th.
-
I also got the email. It is short notice but it's only one page and their tuition is really high so I'll gladly write it tonight after I get home from work
-
It looks like they were accepted to the MPA Environmental Policy program, not the International program, maybe that's why they received word early.
-
Not poor form at all! I'm of the same opinion...
-
You too! I know it didn't say in the email but do you have any idea about when funding decisions come out and the likelihood of getting funding?
-
Just got an email acceptance from Georgetown PPI, wasn't expecting that so quickly. Submitted my app around Jan. 13th.

Hello, I just received my SAR (Student Air Report) and found out that my Expected Financial Contribution (EFC) is $9,792. I definitely am not prepared to contribute that much to my education at anytime soon (I have about $1,000 in the bank). I don't make a lot of money ($35,000 in NYC is not a lot at all) and I'm concerned that this is going to have a negative impact on the scholarships/institutional funding that I will be offered. Does anyone have any input or experience in this area? I'm really worried!!

Georgetown University - MSFS vs GPPI-MPP
fsowannabe replied to MPAIndia2010's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Cha, I have that same question. I think it's the same essay read by both program admissions councils. They asked me to submit two separate transcripts, one to MSFS and the other to MPP. I know that it is possible to be accepted to just one, or both (or obviously neither), and I am hesitant to submit an essay explaining my desire to be in a joint program, because I don't want it to ruin my chances of being accepted to the MSFS program alone. When I spoke to a MSFS rep the other day he said NOT to apply for the MSFS alone and the do a joint application but rather just do the joint application. I haven't been able to get anyone at MSFS on the phone today or yesterday, any input is appreciated.
