Hi future MPHers,
I am graduating with my MPH this semester but I wanted to chime in on the Columbia question- I had received a 30k/year scholarship from them but I can't remember what it was called. They certainly give scholarships, but they're rare. I got it about a week after my acceptance.
I still use my Emory portfolio despite not going there.
So I guess i am not good enough for the scholarship.
LOL, Do you like Columbia MPH program? How's the career fair?

Hey,
I've travelled a lot and Boston is easily the most racist city that I have ever been in. So much so that as a person of color I was constantly stopped at Logan after 9/11. It was so bad that my company would fly me into NY, put me up in a hotel and then send me by train to Boston just to avoid Logan. I've been to the city several times since, and it is still the most segregated city that I have ever seen. I dated someone in Boston and she visited me in Durham and what surprised her the most is that she would see black people and white people in the same place. That does not happen in Boston. And the cost of living is crazy, if you do decide to go, try Somerville.
I think Columbia is having serious financial problems. But a lot of programs are. But they seem a little more cut-thoat about it. They're letting go anyone who doesn't have enough NIH funding to pay their salary and then some (SMS just let go Kim Hopper who was doing some great work in NYC in mental health). I just interviewed there, and it seems like there has been a siginificant drop in PhD applicants and when I interviewed, their most pressing concern was whether I would be able to get external funding. That said, they get 650 new MPH students each year and it is really exciting being around them, plus Columbia has bought up all the real estate within spitting distance so their on-campus housing is really reasonable if you compare it to NY market rate. And from what I understand, unless you already live in the tri-state area it's pretty easy to qualify.
Talking to some of the PhD students, there is a big connection with NYC Health Department and also Pfizer (so definately take that clinical trials course even if you weren't thinking about it)
Anyway, just some random thoughts

I got my PhD from Columbia's SMS department. It's an excellent department, lots of research experiences both at the university and at other colleges and universities in New York, plus nonprofits and NGOs in New York. Great theoretical education in the coursework. Excellent preparation for a doctoral program if that's what you want.
Honestly, all of those departments are great. You can get into a great doctoral program from any of them. Emory, Columbia, Michigan, and UCLA have the best reputations - but Pitt and Boston U are great places too, with lots of research going on.
Hey
It looks like that you were in columbia for public health?
Do you have any advice on environmental health program in Columbia?

From the SDN forum it sounds like a couple have gotten scholarship info, but most have not yet. They should be releasing it before their first admitted students day, which is March 6. Columbia does have scholarships for masters students, but I'm not sure how much they
Thanks!! Are you also get admitted? Do you plan to go?
-
Does anyone get scholarship from Columbia? Do they actually give any scholarship for master?
-
Hey I think I will definitely reject Emory
-
I'm giving u a subjective, emotional based advice:
1. Columbia. Why? They hv nyc, which means many internship chances. Plus... '100 Girls' the movie was made at columbia
2. Emory. CDC around the block!
3. BU. best program. Boston has many options for jobs, etc. Plus, I have never been there, but I love New England, summers in Cape Cod, etc.
So....I would choose Columbia, then BU then Emory last.
Yeah, I agree with you
BU offers me MS instead of MPH, which is awesome! and Columbia has the program that I am interested in studying but I do not know much about the job outlook so I have to email them.
I saw the renting problem in NYC and the cost , but for a long run, columbia is definitely my best choice.

So I basically got in multiple schools for environmental health study.
But I am debating on either choosing Emory, Columbia, or BU.
I personally love BU, and Columbia. Columbia gave me an offer for 2 year climate health certificate program for environmental health. And BU switched me to MS to do environmental health research, which is unexpected.
I applied for MPH global environmental health for Emory and also got accepted.
Now, I do not know which one is the best.
Can anyone who happen to be in the program give me some info about those schools and research and career options?
Thanks!!

Has anyone heard back from University of Washington yet? It seems like they maybe aren't as quick to make decisions as some other schools, but they are my first choice so I'm getting antsy to hear.
Best of luck everyone!
SAME.
I EMAILED THE ADMISSION OFFICE AND ITS BEEN TWO DAYS THEY HAVENT REPLIED TO ME YET.

I wish I have a chance to apply MPH in Northern Europe. I have been researching with a professor since sophomore years and we also collaborate with northern european college doing research. In my opinion, I think some of the problem over there are better than here.

Do they send out the decision through email or what?
-
I think GRE is just one part of the whole application. I guess, we both need to be patient.

Im in the same boat. My GPA is a 2.9+, GRE Quant: 44% Verbal: 87%
Ive applied to Environmental/Occupational Health masters programs at JH, Tulane, Hunter and McGill. I have almost 4 years of work experience in the occupational health field as an EHS professional/ industrial hygienist. Im skeptical about being accepted anywhere because of my low scores/gpa and a lack of research.
I just dont know how you get involved in research activities without being in school or having a masters degree already.
same here.
My GPA is low since I took some many science classes (math and bio double major) and my GRE is ok 90% for both. And i am applying for environmental health without much experience .
I am freaking out and I have no idea where i will end up to

I realized that people are getting admitted by schools but most of them are epidemiology. And there 's no sign of environmental health folks. Should I email the admission office and ask?
-
I went through lots of slides and people are generally applying for big NAME school like U pitt, etc.
I am wondering if anyone has any opinion on Umass amherst or Drexel?
Best

I have not heard any back. UGH
Where 's my hope?

I am really appreciate if someone can give me some tips on writing SOP for mph.
Do I need to say which program I am interested in SOP? Or what do general qualified characteristics they are looking for MPH students
Thanks in advance

I have a low GPA and an average GRE. I've been accepted to one school so far! As niihla08 said, it'd be great if you could boost your GRE scores. However, MPH programs are notorious for accepting lower GPA and GRE applicants, as it is not a major factor in their decision. I wouldn't worry too much. It sounds like you have quite a bit of public health experience.
what do you mean average GRE?
Mine GRE is about 320. is it average?

So I was doing a research in a NGO last summer and the research was related with the grad school program that I am about to apply for.
I am asking the research coordinator to write as my 3rd recommendation letter. My first recommendation letter is from a professor and second is from the research lab project leader whom I have been working on for a year but she's a master student. so i am not sure if it's a good idea if i made the correction choice to choose the coordinator as my third recommendation letter source.
Please help!!

So I just got my first GRE score. Verb 74%, Q 89%
My gpa is relatively low. like a 3.0
but it probably will increase to 3.2 at the end of this semester.
I just started to ask professors write recommendation for me and I looked through the previous year topic of application. Looks like applying early would be a good choice to increase my acceptance rate. So I am wondering how early should I apply?
Also, I 'd like really hear some advice on selecting school for mph ehs program.
I'd really appreciate your help
Thanks a lot

how do I calculate the major gpa? Do I include all the chemistry class I take and calculate the gpa? or do I just calculate the number of chemistry classes that are required in my major?
-
I am a senior right now, major in Chemistry and Math. My overall GPA is pretty low, like 2.90. But my major GPA of chemistry is 3.6+. I am considering apply for MPH for environmental health program.
I don't know if my low overall GPA will affect my application.
Please help and give me some advice, I am really frustrated.
UNC vs Columbia (MPH)

I am currently an undergrad in UNC. I took several SPH courses and I loved it. The fundings in UNC SPH are a lot, from my knowledge but I am not sure about MCH program. Plus, unc has a really greta infectious disease program in school of medicine and I think you can collaborate with them to do some research (if that's what you are interested.)
As for Columbia, I heard they had many opportunities for MPH but there are some concerns with regard the funding in Columbia .
I got into both, but I just do not really wanna spend another 2 years in UNC so I choose Columbia instead. But if you really wanna do research in the long-term, UNC is a better place.
