  1. I was one of the people who posted a waitlist reply. I emailed Dr. Hunter to ask whether my application was still under consideration, and he replied within minutes that I am "quite high up" on the waitlist. He said, "Sorry this is going so slowly. We are waiting on some decisions." I don't know whether he meant decisions on applications or decisions from admitted students, but I'm guessing the latter.

I'm so confused by this, I too e-mailed him today (early this morning) and have yet to get a response. This is beyond frustrating, its almost April!

  2. Anyone heard back from Oxford's M.St. programs?

The e-mail confirming they'd received my application (as well as the English website) says they will be making decisions by March 19th and we should know after that via postal service though if you need the decision sooner to call the department to inquire.

  3. I just got an email from Pratt saying my app has gone to the admissions committee. How long did it take between that and for you to get a decision?

--Hopefully I'll have something other than a question to this topic soon--

I sent it in mid-November and got my acceptance early February. A friend of a friend who attends Pratt says the library school secretary is ridiculous and very disorganized which would explain why, when I called early Jan. she told me I should hear within a week. Its rolling though so the later you apply, the later you hear back. I hope you hear soon though!

  4. I feel your pain Belltolls. I wrote an honors thesis, but I should probably have taken more time to polish it. I'm 4 rejections for 8 apps. I praying for a waitlist of pity.

I wish you the best of luck MityaK and hope you get in somewhere! But, I'm really glad to hear someone is in the same boat as me. I've been lucky enough to have applied to a "backup" program for an MLS which I've been accepted to with a bit of a scholarship. I've actually been rethinking the English Phd route and am so grateful that I had a crazy day where I decided to apply to the MLS program. I think, regardless of what I decide to do, having the MLS will give me a marketable set of skills in a way that an English Phd cannot. I am not by any means saying that an English Phd does not produce incredible scholars with incredible skills, just that I'm not sure how marketable they are outside of the academic world.

Anyway, if I decide to eventually reapply (assuming I will be rejected this round which I'm fully anticipating) my work is going to be on the writing sample. Sigh, this was a bit of a ramble!

  5. That is good to know you got accepted somewhere. I am at the point where I could nee to get in somewhere. I happen to living at home currently, honestly it is not that bad except for that fact that my mom is crazy! So I feel as though I need know from at least one school so that I have some peace of mind.

I digress, what subject are you planning on getting your MA in?

I'm thinking of Archive and Record Management. I'm really new to the MLS thing though and am hoping that, if I end up going this route instead of the English PhD, that Pratt will help out with my undecidedness. I hope you hear soon!

  6. Hi all,

I've just gotten my acceptance to Pratt with a bit of a scholarship. I'm mostly an English MA/PhD applicant but, as those applications seem to be receiving less favorable responses, I'm interested in taking the MLS then possible PhD route. I'm interested in archival research and the like but in all honesty, I know very little about what that entails. Can anyone out there shed some light? Anyone from Pratt? Thanks!

  7. @Threadstarter:

UK unis in general require two academic references. Usually you'd send in letters from your undergrad tutor and your BSc/BA project supervisor; or for PhDs your undergrad tutor/supervisor and your postgrad tutor/supervisor. Don't bother to send in a character reference, people won't care. Even if you sent in a character reference saying "Her parents should be sentenced to death for bringing her into this world" it wouldn't matter. All that matters are your academic credentials.

Thank you, someDAY! I did send in a character reference simply because I wasn't sure the application would allow me to submit without a third name listed. From what you (and everyone else) has said, it won't make much of a difference either way. This really calms my nerves quite a bit so I appreciate everyone's quick response. Thanks again.

Also, crutch if you wouldn't mind my asking, what was your research focus? I ended up applying to Oxford because while browsing their site I saw that Sharon Achinstein was teaching there and she had been a major source in one of my recent research projects cocerning the plague so I thought it would be great to work with her as its relatively difficult to find professors with my specific area of interest. I'm glad to hear the department is mostly laid back as well. Heres to hoping I will be able to experience it firsthand!

  8. Hello all. A few weeks ago I suddenly decided to apply to Oxford's Mst program, 1550-1700 and I had a quick question. I decided very late to apply for a number of reasons and while two of my recommendors had no issue sending out recs the very day I e-mailed them, I was unable to get a third. The Oxford website states that if two recommendations are submitted a third may be a character reference if no other professor can "meaningfully comment on your work". The site also states that it is "not essential to worry about finding a third recommendor". So, in short, I didn't. I asked a previous employer to write me a character reference which, I think, was relatively strong and gave some background as to my desire to continue with my studies. My question is, will this seriously hurt my application? The two LORs are from respected scholars in my field who share very close research interests with myself. I'm just wondering if I should give up hope because of the missing recommendation.

Congrats to all those with acceptances.

  9. God, I know. I do think Virginia is the most beautiful US state, and Charlottesville is pretty much Paradise on Earth. UVA was my second choice for undergrad, and though I made the right decision, I've dreamed of that place ever since. (Doesn't hurt that the program is a pretty perfect fit for me as well!)

So beautiful! I was born in Virginia and promptly moved to Chicago. The few pictures I've seen of my parents house there were incredible. And it certainly doesn't hurt that its a pretty amazing program as well. Oh, UVA you have my heart.

  10. Every professor I've talked to in my field (Early Modern) let me know that its one of the least popular and that alone helps my chances in so far as there are less applicants in that area. Who knows though. I've applied to programs with strong Early Modernists so I'd assume anyone else interested in that field applied to these schools as well which would make it MORE competitive. Oh, I just drive myself crazy with this stuff!

  11. I can't speak as an admitted student but I applied to Pratt and it seems like a wonderful program. I realize it may not be as highly ranked as others but, as its the only accredited program in Manhattan, its also the only school where you can work closely with the NYPL. I think that alone is a great part of the program.

I actually applied early December and they have rolling admissions. I was curious so I called the department and was told that I should hear by post early in February. GRE's didn't seem too important (though I will admit that my scores were high because my first choice programs are English lit. programs) except when it comes to possible scholarships so I wouldn't worry too much about that as long as the rest of your application is strong.

    Good luck!

  12. I'm bothered by the fact that the author continually says so and so scored in the 100th percentile in verbal. Isn't that impossible? I thought ETS only allowed scores through the 99th percentile?

Overall I'm not sure how entirely accurate the article is, though in a way helpful. Although I will say I'm very glad to have two languages under my belt with a French minor after reading this!

  13. I'm not sure an entire field can be done to death, though a topic certainly can. I'm an Early Modernist but I really enjoy Medieval Lit. as well. I wrote a recent term paper on Julian of Norwich and Christ as a mother figure. The period is so great because there are still texts that are being rediscovered; its like a giant treasure trove!
