  1. Hi, I have applied for the MS program in Electrical Engineering at Columbia University in the City of New York for the Fall 2015. I received a mail from Columbia University stating that I would have an interview via skype with one of their faculties. Did you receive any such mails? You have any idea on what that interview would be about? Thanks, dranzer_kai.
  2. Hi, I have finished my undergraduate studies. In that case, should I enter the last date of the last semester? Thanks
  3. But what's the date that I should enter? They have asked me a date
  4. Hi, I am filling a form for University of Southern California where they have asked me to enter the course work through date for my undergraduate studies. Could you tell me what a course work through date is? Thanks
  5. Hi, I am applying for the MS program in Electrical Engineering at Columbia University in the City of New York for the Fall 2015. As I am from India, we use a different grading system (and different letter grades). There is a page in the application where they have asked us to fill the last 50 courses that I have taken during my undergraduate studies and their corresponding grades. In my university, we have S (superior), A,B,C... as the letter grades while it would be different for Columbia. Now I am not sure whether to use the same letter grades or to convert them to a different letter grade (Note: I am not talking about converting the CGPA). I have mailed the department, but they are not replying. This is stopping me from submitting the application. I would like to know what you people are doing if you are applying (or have applied) to Columbia University. Thanks dranzer_kai
  6. Hi, I read that ETS would send GRE essay responses to the institutions for the scores reported after 1st July 2014. Does that mean my complete essay (I screwed up the essay during the exam) will be made available to the score recipients? I am completely screwed up because I thought my SOP and TOEFL scores (27/30 in the Writing section) would compensate for my poor AWA score (3.0/6.0) and spent so much time on writing a good SOP, and it looks like there is no point, as the department is not going to believe me after seeing my AWA essay. Thanks dranzer_kai
  7. Hi, I am planning to apply for MS in Electrical Engineering at UWashington. I heard that University of Washington gives more importance to GRE scores than any other institution. Do they screen the candidates just by using GRE scores in the first round itself? Any idea about the minimum GRE cut-off? Any seniors who have studied there can help me with this. Thanks
  8. So, in addition, 1) Can I compare the research & development in western schools with that of the schools in my native country? Talk about the people that I could meet and share my ideas with them at the institution that I am applying for. 2) Shall I write about my contributions to the physically challenged people? (I have done some projects to help them overcome their disorders and have had meetings with those people) 3) Can I talk about the challenges I faced during my undergraduate studies & high school?
  9. Hi, I understand that personal history statement should contain the challenges faced due to discrimination, isolation etc., the contributions that I would make, and should tell about my past that made me to choose a graduate degree. So, I am trying to come up with something in my case. I just need your opinion because I am not sure if I am correct. Can I write about these points in my personal history statement? (This is just a gist) 1) I will write about my past history that made me to choose the field that I am applying for. 2) I never faced any problems because of discrimination or whatever. Anyway, I faced some challenges because I was from a lesser known college and people tend to believe that we aren't as good as other college students. Yet I beat the students from recognized colleges in contests which are relevant to the field that I am applying for. 3) The contributions that I would make to the society. Does that make sense? Thanks.
  10. Hi, I have a personal homepage, which lists in detail about my projects, honors and research interests. Though I have mentioned the link of my personal homepage in the resume, I would like to mention the same in my SOP as I believe some institutions don't look at resume. Is it okay to include the link of my personal homepage as a footer in the first page of my SOP? Thanks.
  11. My GRE score is 316 (Q-164, V-152, A-3 only ) But I ensured that I got better score in TOEFL writing section. My TOEFL score is 107 (Reading,Writing,Listening-27 (each), Speaking-26). I don't have time to retake GRE and frankly I don't want to retake it just because of AWA score. I am applying for M.S. in Electrical Engineering (with Analog Design as my specialization). Apart from my gre score I have a really good profile. So can my toefl writing score compensate for my poor awa score ? Let's say department doesn't specify any awa cut off in the website.
  12. Thanks for your replies. Just wondering... It would have been much easier if they had mentioned the minimum GRE requirements so as to avoid "overwhelming pile of applications"... And one more doubt. What are the universities that I have listed wouldn't reject me during the initial screening process ?
  13. Hi Macchiato, I have looked at their websites. They usually mention that they don't have any minimum gre requirement..but from what i heard that's not the case. That's why I wanted to know.
  14. Hi all, I am applying for fall 2015. I have scored 316 in GRE (Q-164, V-152, A-3) and 107 in TOEFL (R,L,W-27, S-26). I am applying for MS Electrical engineering (Analog Design) from a top univ in India. Apart from my GRE score I have a good profile- CGPA-9.4/10 , (Scored top grades in the courses that are relevant to my field of interest for MS). Done some good projects related to the field that I am applying for. 1 year relevant experience in a renowned company (in the same field) I have won national level contests conducted by top companies(in the same area of interest) and also have the links to the websites that have details about my achievements..... I am sure that I have greater chance of getting admit if they overlook my GRE score. I just want to know the name of some top universities that reject candidates just based on GRE score without seeing the rest of the application... for example can you tell me the ones among these univ that reject candidates just based on GRE scores ? (without even looking at the rest of the profile...I mean they screen candidates in the beginning itself)... Stanford UCLA UCSD UCB Washington TAMU Columbia UTAustin Caltech Regards, dranzer_kai
