Where in the States are you coming from?
-
Everyone has a key card for their bedroom! So no worries. Lots of privacy. There is a Metro (supermarket) like 5 minutes away which is very convenient... and way too many good restaurants on Bloor W (3 minutes away) to list. Right across the street from GH there's a Subway and a really good pizza place.

Hey! 1. There are quite a few social events organized; usually at least one a week. It's all about taking advantage of them though. When I first moved in I went to just about everything... once I had made friends I stopped going to as much. People are busy, as all grad students are, but everyone needs time to socialize. 2. I was able to work in my room. With the door closed it was really quiet. There's also a "library" (basically a study room) on the top floor. I really liked spending time there because it was super calm and comfortable. 3. This really really depends on your suitemates. The common areas are kept really clean throughout the building, but you and your roomies are responsible for your suite. Hope that helped!! Don't hesitate to ask/ PM me if you want more info! Ooh! I have questions about Grad House. 1. How was the social experience? Like are there a lot of social events and opportunities to make friends, or are people too busy and often isolated in their rooms? I've heard mixed things about the social life there. 2. Noise level? Can you actually work in your rooms, or did you have to go to a library? 3. Cleanliness? Thanks so much!

I'm at U of T. It's great. Let me know if you have any questions about the university/ city. I actually lived in Grad House for a year and had a good experience. I guess it would be hit or miss with roommates, but the building itself is well run, though pretty pricey. Be aware though that it's actually hard to get in, so you have to apply really early... it might be too late for next year.

Don't forget about me!! 4 pm, Victory?
-
Doesn't really matter to me. Probably early evening? Maybe Friday? Just a suggestion.

I remember being stressed waiting for the MA SSHRC letter to arrive, but y'all should try to relax as much as possible- you're basically assured positive news!
-
Sounds good to me! Do we have a time/ date?
-
Got my letter, finally! My score was 25.3.
-
Thanks! I already know my result, it's just that I'm a giant nerd and want to know my score
-
Had anyone in Toronto received their mail yet? The people who work at the desk of my building probably think I'm insane... I've checked my mailbox like 5 times this morning (knowing full well that the mail often doesn't come until the afternoon).
-
Sorry, sorry! I found out in person- I happened to be at my department and the secretary told me.
-
I don't know my score yet, but I just found out that I got a CGS! Guess lack of publications didn't matter after all So when are we going for drinks??
-
I'm doing the same thing, minus the Honey Bunches of Oats.
-
You're right, greygardens. I am officially freaking Seriously though, at this point I'm trying to convince myself that it really doesn't matter much one way or the other. I won OGS, I think I have a solid application (minus the publication and work experience, though, as I posted before, I'm hoping my grades, awards, and LORs make up for that), and this is my first time applying for a doctoral SSHRC, so it's no huge loss if I don't get it. Of course, thus far self-delusion isn't working very well! I'm super, super nervous.
-
I'm really, really, really trying not to freak out about this.
-
Lucky! Oh well; the more I talk to people in the Humanities, the more I realize that publications are not all that important for a first year PhD student. Hopefully I made up for it in other parts of my app!
-
That sounds like reasonable advice. I'm going to have a publishable paper out of my MA work, but it's a little frustrating because that was only confirmed AFTER SSHRC deadlines passed.
-
Yeah, it seems like the whole publishing thing varies a lot from discipline to discipline. It's expected that by the time I graduate, I will have 1-3 published articles in really good, reputable journals, plus have several conference presentations under my belt. Anyone else think we'll hear something on Monday or Tuesday of next week? I'm getting really impatient!
-
Thanks, RaaR; I feel a bit better! Ugh, patience is NOT my virtue. At least I have studying for my comps to keep me occupied. Very appropriately, I am currently re-reading Dante's Purgatorio...

Hey! This is my first time posting, though I've been obsessively checking this thread for a while. I'm a first year PhD in Italian studies; I had a SSHRC for my MA, and this is my first time applying at the doctoral level. My app was forwarded to the national level. Waiting is so hard! I did find out that I got OGS though, so that's a relief. I wanted to ask your guys' opinion on something. I am nervous about the fact that when I submitted my application in October, I had no publications or conference presentations (I did, however, manage to mention an upcoming conference in my proposal). On the other hand, I had all A+s except for one A in my 9 MA courses, and in my undergrad got a medal for having the highest graduating average in the humanities at my university, along with many other scholarships and awards. I know that grades don't matter as much for the doctoral SSHRC, but do you think that my GPA, together with great letters and a really solid proposal, is enough to make up for the fact that I don't have pubs? Honestly, publications at this stage in the game are rare in my discipline, but I don't know if SSHRC knows that :S Any advice is much appreciated!
