Ok also--what is this about subcommittees and categories? Category A, category C? I know there are the different pre-selection committees for the 5 areas, and selection committees for the 5 areas, but is it then broken up into multiple sections between each individual discipline--meaning, multiple economics committees? I'm just wondering how this works with the waitlist: would there just be one waitlist for all the economics subcommittee categories, or multiple waitlists?

Haven't received anything in the UK yet.

To those who've received their letters/know their scores already, mind posting some more details (if you haven't already)? What might be helpful is knowing the subcategory of your research. Any philosophers or classicists hear back yet?

What do you mean? Edit: Oh, right, you mean that the 7957 applications includes some direct-to-Ottawa applications that weren't forwarded to the second round, whereas the 930/1942 stat only refers to forwarded applications, right?

Ah, if you scroll down to the very bottom of the doctoral awards page http://www.sshrc.ca/site/apply-demande/program_descriptions-descriptions_de_programmes/fellowships/doctoral-doctorat-eng.aspx there are descriptions of these three other "extra" awards they give to the top doctoral applicants. The Ross one is for sociologists and gets you an additional $10,000; the Queen's is for Canadian Studies and covers tuition in addition to the award amount; and the Taylor fellowship is for the best doctoral applicant overall and awards you tuition and an additional $5,000. Nice!

To avoid frantic question-asking and other paranoia, let's report the basics when we post: 1. Funded/notfunded/waistlisted; Score out of 30, other score details, if applicable (if they broke it down by categories, etc.) 2. City 3. Letter received: date; Letter postmarked: date; Letter dated: date 4. Subject area and/or committee 5. Applied through your university or direct to Ottawa 6. Year in PhD studies when you would take up the award (so, what you’ll be in Sept/Oct. 2010) 7. Taylor, Ross, or Queen's Fellowship?? 8. Anything else you want to include that might be helpful: business-related project pitch? publications? major conference presentations? second time applying? MA SSHRC? OGS? Feel free not to include anything you don't want to include. And remember, this is for posterity. Gladiators…I salute you!

Alright then!! Thanks for calling. Although, having read the aforementioned wiki, I now have zero faith in the program officers' truthfulness....but here's hoping!!

Gahhhhhhhh! Ok I seriously think I've actually given myself an ulcer today knowing today might be the day (erm, well, of course, it wouldn't be the day for me since I'm in the UK...but still, it's just the idea of people knowing today, there's seriously a pit in my stomach!). Spent the morning reading through the entire SSHRC postdoc wiki...you know, for fun. And now..."mid May"?? I feel lightheaded... But I think I'm sticking with jahmal on this... "will be announced BY mid May" could just mean they are in fact mailing them out this week like the other email said (maybe late this week), so most people will have received them by mid-May. Makes sense. But um, yeah, to the bar it is...

Ok 19,000 page views--there have got to be more than just us 10 obsessive crazies...so since we likely have a couple weeks left, I have a few questions and I want all you lurkers to chime up if you have any insight! I saw someone asked this before, but we didn't get too many responses: does anyone know if there are any differences (in size/envelope/thickness perhaps?) between the yes envelopes and the no envelopes? If you've gotten a doctoral SSHRC before, can you let us know whether there is maybe extra info in the envelope (a reply form we have to fill out to accept? an inflatable party hat?) that might make it ever so slightly identifiable before we open it? [Ok wow, just typing that out...I really am an obsessive crazy...oops]. Second, anyone know if they mail all the letters out together, or if (like with admissions sometimes) the yes letters go out a week ahead or anything? Third, for fun, when you get it (OPTIMISM!) what will you do to celebrate???? Ready...GO!

Wooo! Got home, got my mail, and was on the A-list and forwarded to the national competition. Yay! What is this not mentioning score though?! Useless... : ) Best of luck to all!

Eeeeee I won't be home for a few hours so can't check my mail!! Can't...focus...knowing...it's...there........ Congrats!!

I applied directly, but am in the UK so will likely be getting my letter a few days later than everyone--I'm relying on you Ontarians to let us know when you get yours so we can know when they're out!

Wow, thanks for all the info mudlark! For the direct-to-Ottawa applications (I did my undergrad in Canada, but my masters in the UK, so didn't apply through my school for the PhD SSHRC fellowship), do you or does anyone else have any insight into when those applicants usually get the score letters? Are they emailed or snail mailed? Any data on what the average (or extreme) score drop is between rounds 1 and 2?

Table 7 on the excel spreadsheets shows the success rate by year of study...it looks like it is pretty close between those starting the award in their first year and those in their second year. In 2009, just a percent or two more in favour of 2nd years, in 2008 more in favour of first years, in 2007 more in favour of second years. So it should be pretty even? http://www.sshrc.ca/...bleaux-eng.aspx
