  1. I've been invited to open house weekend at a great program that I'm really interested in. We just got our itineraries and instead of scheduling our faculty meetings for us, we are asked to pick which faculty we want to meet with and schedule times with them individually. I've already met with my POI multiple times, plus she is on the admissions committee, so I know I'm going to meet with her, but what about everyone else? There's really only one other faculty member who's interests match mine. I feel like I'll come off as aloof if I only meet with one faculty member outside of the admissions committee. On the other hand, if I ask for meetings with other people, I don't know what we would talk about. Their research is interesting, but doesn't really have much to do with what I want to do and I'm not sure I would ask very insightful questions about it. Thoughts?
  2. Reviving this thread because registration is now open! Does anyone have insight on whether it's preferable to register for courses as pass/fail or letter grade? Does it matter or is it just a matter of personal preference?
  3. Hey Scarecrow- When you submitted the application, it should have prompted you to make a Wolverine Access account. If you check your application status there, you should see a link that says "view decision."
  4. For those of you who have done/are doing campus visits...how many meetings with individual faculty members did you have? I just got my schedule for my Open House at Yale next week and I'm having individual meetings with nearly 2/3 of the faculty... is this normal?
  5. Thanks! That does help. I actually heard from another attendee that we should be getting schedules soon, but I may still email the department if I don't hear anything in the next couple days. From what everyone's said the moral of the story seems to be that the vast majority of us fret way too much over the details of our interview/open house weekends, and the facutly probably wont remember or care whether we wear brown or black shoes
  6. Hi all, I have an interview weekend in about a week and I still have no idea what events are planned for invited students or what he schedule of events is going to me. I'm trying to decide what to bring with me and I feel like I can't do that until I know more about what I'll be doing. So, I have 3 questions: 1. Is a schedule for invited candidates normally provided ahead of time? 2. Would it be appropriate to email the department and ask for an idea of the itinerary? 3. What are some common events that I should plan on attending during the weekend (besides faculty interviews) Thanks!
  7. Just saw that a bunch of people got in to UCLA.. Congrats, everyone! Unrelated question - does anyone have any idea about when UMass will start making their decisions? Based on previous years it looks like it goes on throughout most of February and I've been checking my email and refreshing the results page nearly constantly.
  8. Hey Garyon! I think the interview period is definitely coming to a close (in the next two weeks ish?) but I still have two schools that haven't contacted anyone, as far as I know.. so not totally over yet! I'm also counting UMD as lost (also UCSD and Michigan) because I didn't get invited to the open house. About Yale - I don't really know about chances without an invitation, but here's some of the text from the email I was sent: "The Open House is a chance for us to learn more about your interests in linguistics, as just as importantly, for you to meet and talk with faculty members, to see Yale, and to meet the other shortlisted candidates (your potential new colleagues)." So I don't know if that means that everyone who was shortlisted was invited or not. Also, even if it does, there's a chance that everyone at the Open House will be crazy or royally screw up in interviews, in which case, they'll contact others. I should note, however, that as one of the invited, I really hope they don't deem us *all* crazy :P' In the meantime, you and I can both sit and freak out over UMass together! In the past their interviews/admissions have been really erratic so I have no idea when I should expect to hear anything from them.
  9. Yeah I decided to take a year off between my MA and starting a PhD and devote myself to research, so I forget that most people are doing these applications while still in classes. That's gotta be really intense!
  10. Ha! Thanks. If only that was how it worked
  11. Congrats Chiki! I was really really hoping to get one of these invites.. but it seems like they all went out at once This has been a rough week
  12. Well, just got the rejection letter from Berkeley. At least they were kind enough to send individually addressed emails. Congrats, again, to all who got in. I'm a little jealous, but mostly happy for you Apparently there were less than 10 people who got in.. so way to go you!
  13. I'm in the same boat. I think that those who got accepted were just informed through email. isylia mentioned before that even the online portal still says "submitted" even after the acceptance email. I hate to be a downer, but I think we are just waiting to get our form rejection email
  14. Congratulations!!!!! Seriously, that's amazing. On a selfish note, did you find out by email or did they post something online?
  15. So.... Apparently someone on the results search page said they heard from Berkeley today? Has anyone else gotten any news from them?
  16. Thanks for the update! I've been going kind of crazy because in previous years they've sent out invites the last week in January. I'll try to calm down now I don't have any *real* information here, but here's what I've been guessing so far. I don't know much about UCLA or Stanford because those aren't on my list, but I have been following UCSD and Berkeley. UCSD - I could be wrong (and I hope I am), but it seems like it's unlikely to get an admissions offer here without having been invited to the Open House. They didn't really do any other kinds of interviews, so I think the Open House invites are the short-list. I haven't talked to anyone at UCSD about this or anything though, so feel free to correct me. Berkeley - I think there is absolutely a chance for admission without interviews. Once again, I didn't interview with them, but most everyone who did seemed to have the same question being asked to them related to trying to figure out their research goals. In my case, I know that I presented a very unified research goal, so I'm not surprised that I wasn't interviewed, if that was the purpose. So in this case, being interviewed means they are still seriously considering you, but not being interviewed probably doesn't mean you're out. Again, this is entirely speculative so please correct me if I'm mistaken
  17. Bummer. Oh well. Life goes on, right?
  18. It seems like everyone did their interviews with Maryland last week and last weekend. Is it safe to assume that if I haven't heard from a POI there that they aren't interested? At this point, just being able to cross it off the list of things to worry about would be such a relief
  19. Thanks! I was looking at previous years and thinking that Michigan could be sending invites any day now. Even though I hate waiting, I'm glad to know that it will be a while still. Michigan is the next school that I'm hopeful to hear back from, since it seems like I probably am not going to get an interview at Maryland :/

    New Haven, CT

Hey everyone, I am going to visit New Haven next month for interviews, and I'm trying to get a feel for the area. This thread has been really helpful but I still wonder about a few things: 1. How far in advance do you typically need to arrange housing? I know some college towns start signing leases for September as early as February and March. Should I be apartment hunting when I interview? 2. My husband and I are coming from a very pet friendly area and we have two dogs (one medium/large, one small). It seems like New Haven in general is not very pet-friendly, especially for larger breeds. Has anyone else had experience with this? 3. What are the prospects like for out of state teachers moving to New Haven? My husband would be moving with me and we are really concerned about him finding work. He has a college degree, and two years of teaching experience (6th -8th grade math), but isn't committed to staying with teaching if the job market for teachers is terrible. Thanks!
  21. Congrats!! I got an invitation too and I'm freaking out. Do you have any idea what to expect from the open house?
