  1. Yale is out ! I am rejected ! (btw, I got admitted into SUNY Stony Brook's Cultural Studies and Comp. Lit program, PhD... sometimes I wonder: are the Music Department "really" interested in Musicians???? Seems not.... Other departments are... a lot!! We, musicians, should think about other options: looks like we are more valued in non-musical and as competitive world...) Good Luck everybody!
  2. I received the snail mail from Harvard. Rejected, letter was okay. Yale is soooooooo loooooonngggggggg !
  3. Hello ! I got to Columbia "French and Comparative Literature". In fact, "we" are not in the Comp. Lit dpt per se. Within the frame of our home department (French in my case), we will do a Comp. Lit minor, or certificate, or whatever, that will be called a "PhD in *** and Comparative Literature". Getting into the Comp. Lit dpt at Columbia through the official door of the English Lit is like Mission Impossible... about 700 applications !! Good luck everybody !
  4. I agree with Jose, if you have a shaky relationship with your teacher/advisor, that's probably not the place/person you want to be in/with for further studies. I do know that, sometimes, faculty prefer to send their undergrad elsewhere, both for the experience's sake and for getting new and fresh students. Since you are taking a year off (which is always a good thing), try to take a look at all the programs where you might want to go, besides your alma mater. You should have a plan B, and as a musician, think larger in terms of possibilities. Good luck !
  5. Hi Sarah, I emailed the department in the end of January directly, and I learned about my rejection for the same program you applied to. My application was forwarded to the MAPH, and I shall hear officially from them on March 12th (although some people are already receiving offers). However, my status on the website did not change at all ! So my advice for you, would be to contact them directly, they are very nice and they should respond. Good luck ! Also for the other people, no snail mail from Harvard, I don't know how cheap they put into the mail or if it is a snow problem, but it is VERY long. I called them, and they confirmed it was sent out last week, could take up to 2 weeks to be received. I emailed Nancy Shapman to know more but she won't reply before Wednesday anyway... Just to let you know. (between, I am off the waitlist at Princeton !!!)
  6. Yes, I did hear from them one more time: "you will hear from us when it is all done" ! So, I assume no one should be in a hurry from Yale.... Also, regarding NYU, the process is in its middle and will keep going until April 15th. Again, no hurry. Stil waiting for Harvard snail mail in NYC, although given the fact I did not receive a phone call makes me think I am out of the game. For those who are interested, I am withdrawing my wait-list acceptance at Princeton, because I got into Columbia (in Comp. Lit PhD) ! If by any chance I hear positively from Yale, Harvard or NYU, I will withdraw as well. Good luck for everyone !!!
  7. It was the Department of Music, and the ad.ass. said : "all results have been sent out by regular mail yesterday." I don't know more
  8. I called Yale, they say there are still Committee meetings, but nobody in the Grad Administration works today, I should call back tomorrow. I also called Harvard... results were sent out by regular mail yesterday... thus it depends where you live, you'll receive it in the next days... Good luck!!!
  9. Yes, same for me (for NYC). Actually, I also got accepted into a program, not a music one though... i'll share once it gets official. Meanwhile, like you, positive answers are always good to hear. Hope Yale is gonna show up (figuratively and literally) VERY SOON. From a search on the result page, Harvard normally sends out notification in early March. Any insider to confirm? infirm? Thanks, and good luck for all !
  10. Same for me, a nice, impersonal rejection! Well, I was not a good fit into the program anyway !
  11. Does somebody want to take the phone and call Yale up to know what's going on?
  12. Wait-listed at Princeton
  13. UC Berkeley will send results during the last week of February (source: Music Department Ad. Assistant) Princeton: likewise. Harvard and Yale, no idea.... Sorry !
  14. Here is why I got when inquiring about my status on February 3rd: "The music department applications are still under review; but at this point it wouldn't make sense to add new material". Thus I assume that results should come shortly, or at least, people whom they want to admit shall be contacted through their POI or other references Professors, if any...
  15. Thanks for your reply Timothy ! I first made contact with them in October, and one professor tried in November, the other one in December... I was not fond of the program anyway, but I just expected "some kind of reply", just to personalize the application a little bit. There is one person in this thread who thought the the program was not that great, if I remember well... I guess Yale and Princeton are gonna come soon, and those are more important to me, as I could make contact with both, and i really loved both program really much.
  16. Well, never mind, I was rejected quite strongly: "The majority of those who apply to the Graduate School have strong qualifications and demonstrate an ability to do advanced academic work. We regret that... bla bla bla" --> so i don't ? So gentle, it's unbelievable !!! In addition, they never ever responded to any email, letter, phone call, neither to me nor two of my professors who contacted them... Fine. Good Bye Brown )
  17. Just a little note: I received an email stating that Brown University (ethnomusicology track) will give the results tonight at 5:15PM. Good Luck everyone!
  18. Thanks for your info, Timothy, Do you know if that is true for PhD in Music Theory/History as well? Or are you talking about the Composition track only?
  19. I can only talk for mine, which is Music Theory and History (hope it's good for you!)
  20. If it can make you feel better (or worse... sorry!), U.of.Chicago already sent out admissions result before the week-end (confirmed). They did not send the rejection letter yet... I did not get in the Ph.D. in Musicology, got transferred to the MAPH instead, which either way isn't gonna work out because of the half-tuition you gotta pay (at best). My impression is that they were looking for people with very well-rounded background in the humanities, and that they take test scores pretty seriously (mine was kinda low, I got 510 Verbal, 700 Quant, GPA 3.9 but obviously did not matter). Congrats to those who got in ! And good luck for the other schools we're all waiting for...
  21. Yeah, very quiet ! Do we know who is the lucky one who got in Music Theory and History at University of Chicago? (saw that on the result page). Does it mean whoever did not get the acceptance email (or "recommendation to the Dean for admissions) is out already?
  22. I applied to UC Berkeley, Harvard and Columbia as well. Nothing from any, but I guess in anything related to the Humanities, one can expect to wait until mid-February. I know that CUNY Graduate Center is a good program, and they've had a pretty good placement recently (Columbia, Yale...). I believe the program even carries a fellowship, or some form of financial support in addition to teaching, which is quite good compared to other CUNY programs. From a Professor there, I've been told they "normally" prefer applicants with already a Masters degree, rather than someone straight from undergrad. At Columbia, in Ethnomusicology, I know that the program is VERY selective (last year they took 2 from a pool of 70, only in Ethno!), very "ethno-focused", and they look for applicants with really strong social sciences background, ideally with external funding at the time of their application (my source is a Professor there). Regarding GRE, I've been told that the Music Department does not care so much by itself, but GSAS is the one that makes "cut" according to GRE scores. Hence, the AdCom makes decisions accordingly. Regarding Berkeley, I only know about Music History and Literature (part of it because of Dr. Taruskin). Good luck with everything!
  23. Hi Everybody ! Another applicant to Music PhD is here ! (musicology, or music history). First, good luck to all of us for this year, it's gonna be hard, but we gonna make it (hope so). Does any of you know about the Musicology program at WashU?
