  1. Hi Gabe, Thanks so much for your reply. It's very helpful for me to hear from your perspective, since I'm studying abroad and my advisor has been pretty indifferent.. One more question to follow up: I have until the end of August to write my thesis. If somehow I incorporate organization theory into my research, would that be helpful? It will still be have to be on a cultural organization (arts, design, advertising, etc)
  2. Hi Professor, I'm in a cultural sociology masters program, and did my undergrad in humanities. I intend to apply to phd programs for fall 2016 once I'm done with my program in August. The problem I have right now is that I've been hearing a lot of negative comments on the job prospects of cultural sociologists. Since my program is very specifically geared towards cultural sociology, and specifically qualitative methods, I have no background in anything quantitative from my masters, and since my undergraduate was not in sociology, I lack background in wide literature of sociology as well. Would it be possible for me to apply with a qualitative cultural sociology thesis and get trained in quantitative methods at the phd program? or should I try to figure something on my own and incorporate it into my thesis? Thank you!
  3. Hi all, I'm currently in masters program right now, and my interest lies somewhere in between communication and sociology departments (my current program is in sociology). Although I will be applying to few of both depending on the faculty, would you say either one of them has better job prospects after phd? or even in terms of getting into a phd? For example, I've seen quite a few sociology phds get a job in the communications department, but I don't remember seeing the reverse. Is this because sociology is more transferrable or there just aren't many jobs out there in sociology departments? Everyone tells me how the fit is important and I should follow my academic passion, etc...and as much as I understand that, I would also like to hear some realistic advice in terms of job prospects. After hearing and reading so much discouragement on the job prospects of BOTH disciplines, I'm seriously considering a drastic career change... I'd love to hear about current phd students or graduates whether they would do anything differently if they had the chance to go back. I love research and academic work, but I still would like a decent job prospect in the future. Any advice?
  4. I applied to their public programs internship and was interviewed 2 weeks ago. From what the interviewer said, the decisions were to be made and announced within 2 weeks from the date of the interview (which makes it last friday) but I haven't heard anything back yet..
  5. Wow. I don't mean to be too inquisitive, but did you manage to publish as an undergraduate? It would be very helpful for me if you could share how you got published! I was hoping there would be more opportunities in the masters program, but since it's a 1 year masters, no one is really guiding anyone about publications, conferences, etc...
  6. Thank you all! PhillyCJ: it's nice to meet someone with similar interests! To be honest, I had zero background in sociology until about two months from now, and while UK certainly seems rich in cultural sociology and research on internet/culture as you mentioned, my decision to go back to US has to do a lot with where I would want to live/start my career in. There are also financial reasons as well; as much as UK universities provide funding for many of their phd students, the number incomparable to US, where financial package is guaranteed for all of their accepted students. Certainly hoping this one year master will help me gain a enough background in sociology and research for me to get into a phd program.. May I ask what your background is, and what your interests are specifically?
  7. Hi all, I just started my masters in cultural sociology in UK, and am planning to apply to phd programs next year. My interest is a bit interdisciplinary, coming from media studies background in undergrad. Can you guys suggest any programs with professors researching internet, art, and culture? I'm looking into other interdisciplinary or media and communication programs as well. The only sociology program I can think of at the moment is princeton, with Dimaggio, and possibility media programs in NYU, Northwestern, and Brown (MCM). Any other programs or names that I should be aware of? Thanks!

  9. Hi all, I'm doing my masters in UK (actually just started) and was initially thinking about applying to phd (in US) after I have completed my masters. But situation came up, and I may have to apply this round. I feel like I can write a paper for a class I'm taking this term a little in advance and send that as my writing sample, but recommendations (although I do have two from my undergrad in US, I was hoping to get two from this school) and statement of purpose are a bit problematic. I also should contacting POIs too.... My GRE scores are also sort of meh, Qual 164 and Quant 167, so I was hoping to up my Qual to 166-167 range by the time I apply for Phd, but I'm not sure I would have time now. Would those few points make any difference? I'm dead panicking right now, since I had not thought about applying this term, but I also think I can manage to pull it off if I really tried. Any recommendations? Is this a bad idea? Please help.
