  1. Did you end up retaking the GRE? How did it go? I'm asking because my scores are similar to yours and I will be retaking mine soon (and I'm nervous my scores won't improve). All the best to you!
  2. You could also send both, but I guess it depends on how GRE scores are evaluated at the programs you apply to. I don't think plus or minus one point on quant makes that much of a difference.
  3. How did it go? I plan on using the apps from Magoosh for the next couple of weeks.
  4. Your scores look pretty good in my eyes (as do your other stats and experiences--good job!). But who am I to say, I have the same scores except 4 points lower on V My understanding, after reading lots of admissions info online, is that the AWA can't really make up for anything--the verbal score stands for itself. But I am no expert. You can probably get a better answer if you ask the programs you are applying to. Good luck!
  5. I would say retake too. Considering your experience and preparation, it could be possible that you just had a bad day (test). Don't give up!
  6. I took the GRE 3 weeks ago and was reasonably happy with my scores (154V/162Q/5.0AW). Well, I was happy with everything except the verbal score. I'm an international student so I'm aware that my vocab is limited, yet I was hoping for a higher score, esp considering that I went to college for 3.5 years in the US, including one year as an exchange student at a pretty prestigious school. I e-mailed admissions and they told me that faculty understand this and if they were interested in working with me they could easily find out my verbal skills by interviewing me. So I felt comforted and decided not to retake since I'm short of money and have to travel 1.5–2 hours to get to the testing center. Now that deadlines are approaching I am getting very worried that my verbal score might drag me down. I'm applying to some pretty highly ranked social psych PhD programs, including U Oregon, Austin, UC Berkeley. I feel pretty good about the rest of my application (almost perfect TOEFL score, high GPA, B.S. and M.S. in psych, lots of research experience and teaching experience--I even tutored college-level English--and several POIs have expressed interest in me). Should I retake or not? I don't have much time to practice, because my first application deadline is Nov. 21…What if my score doesn't improve? Any advice? /Freaking Out
  7. I've been looking around for some info on this but with little success. So, what's a good (or good enough to submit) score on the GRE subject test in psychology? For top 10 PhD programs? Top 40?
  8. Great input. Thanks!
  9. Hey everyone, I need some advice on what to put in the "honors" section of one of my applications. The online app asks me to "List all honors, financial assistance, awards, fellowships, scholarships and assistantships received." I'm an international student and universities in my country don't really hand out any honors or awards etc to anyone (unless my acceptance to a competitive study abroad program counts?). So what do I put here? This is what I can think of: I was on the Dean's Honors List at a Big Name US university (2 of 3 quarters) I was on the Honor Roll at a community college (5 of 5 semesters) Treasurer of an honor society (cc) Honors program (cc) Two small scholarships ($250–$450) (cc)--I should mention I am kind of proud of these as very few international students received scholarships at this college I also held several paid teaching assistant/reader/tutor positions at the cc, but I assume those don't count as honors even though the instructions mention assistantships. Also, it's been a while since I attended the cc (4-5 years), so it feels strange to have a big gap in my list of honors. ALSO, if I want to list more than 3 awards, I have to send them in an e-mail because there's only room for 3 in the online app. Is it worth sending any of the above in an e-mail or are they not significant enough? They're on my CV anyway. Thanks in advance!
