  1. Just remember that your writing skills will be shown more clearly in your SOP and writing sample, and if you did quantitative research your writing sample might even reflect your ability to do statistics (which is the math that's actually relevant). So there are other more important components of your application that will demonstrate these skills. A low GRE score might look questionable because it suggests that for whatever reason you couldn't sit down for a few hours and do this thing properly... like you can't think under pressure or limited time or something that doesn't reflect well on you as a student. As long as your score is decent enough, I doubt GRE scores really make a difference (as others have already said). By the way, UMichigan also doesn't require the GRE.
  2. I got accepted into Chicago and I got the email about the FLAS a while back too. Since it's applicable to more than linguistics, I just assumed they sent it to people that fulfill certain requirements or something (like those that have a certain GPA).
  3. I got an email from University of Toronto saying I'm on their waiting list.
  4. I can't imagine visiting so many places! I have soooooo much stuff to do in advance this weekend because I'm visiting UMichigan this coming week.
  5. Congratulations!!!!!!!!!
  6. Michigan also sent invites a while back for shortlisted candidates, and their campus visit is actually next week. However, since they reimburse us up to $500 for the flight, I don't know if they're only inviting prospective students that are coming from somewhere close enough.
  7. Thanks!! I got an email. There's also unofficial information on the funding package + invitation to visit April 2-3.
  8. Thanks I still can't believe it at all.
  9. I got into UChicago!!!!!!!!!!! OMG I've been doubting myself so hard lately... and I still feel that there are soooo many people way more talented than I am.
  10. Congratulations to those that got into UCLA!! ...Umm, so I keep being anxious about being on the waiting list at McGill because I'm really in love with their department from what I see/know so far. I want to contact them, but I'm afraid of asking something inappropriate/awkward (like it is okay to ask where you are on the waiting list). Am I just supposed to wait quietly? I don't want to seem like I'm not interested or enthusiastic, but I also don't want to look desperate.
  11. Rejected from Cornell. Oh well... Congratulations to those that I got in (saw some acceptances on the results page)
  12. Congratulations!! Now I'm a bit anxious about UIUC since I haven't heard anything from them, but I think my research interests really fit with just one professor so my "fit" factor might not be that strong.
  13. Mine says "in review" too. But the email I got last week said "We have now completed the review of applications for our graduate program."
  14. Got another email from a professor saying she's looking forward to meeting me (at around 6am EST on a Saturday...?). They are so nice. Congratulations!!!
  15. I might ask you for tips eventually By the way, the invitation was from one of my POIs. I just got another email from another professor expressing how he's excited that I will be visiting. It made me super happy
  16. Me too!!
  17. Thanks I keep telling myself I'm going to read more papers in my free time. Yet, I spend the time refreshing the results page and checking my email >.>
  18. Got an email from McGill saying I'm on the waiting list... Now I have to wait until after April 15th to know for sure *sigh* ...but at least it's not a rejection (yet).
  19. Getting notified that someone viewed your academia.edu page really makes you think how much extra information schools can get from looking up your name. I have a unique name so it's easy to search for me. There's nothing bad, but nothing that would help much (random mentions on my department blog, acknowledgement on a study I helped up with, honor roll in high school...lol).
  20. Now I'm scared knowing that it's coming. They're probably going down the alphabet. I just got two emails in the past ten minutes, but they were some other random stuff. Scared me both times.
  21. Something like that happened to me a few years ago when I was applying for my MA. Well, I'm sure it's not uncommon, unfortunately. I was freaking out, naturally, so I wrote an email to another professor I knew, explaining the situation and asking if it'd be possible for her to write me a very last-minute recommendation (I also described my academic goals and interests and all). I didn't know her super well because I only took a class with her, but I sat up front and did really well so I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. Anyway, she helped me out and submitted the letters within a few days and I'm forever grateful to her. Basically, I suggest asking someone else if they can help you out so at least your applications will be complete.
  22. Congrats to those that got into Berkeley!! So exciting! Looks like acceptance and rejection emails went out the same day in the past, so now I'm just waiting...
  23. Freaking about a bit because I noticed that two people got interview emails from Cornell... Feel free to share what the emails say if you got one
  24. Sent you a PM.
  25. Had a Skype "interview" with one of my POIs at McGill today. She asked how I got interested in linguistics. The rest was mostly about my research interests, especially because my interests relate to a few things they do there, so it felt like a nice conversation about linguistics rather than my character or something. She encouraged me to contact them if I have any other questions about anything at all, so I think I'll try to do that to show even more enthusiasm (if a question really comes up). I don't know what it all means, but considering I've been so nervous about this I'm going to be patient and work on my current school stuff.
