  1. Hey patelcm, I too am interested in virology research and I recently got into a Ph.D program that is heavy in virology research. Your CV is very obviously for med school. There is a lot of stuff in your CV that you don't need, such as your internship section and your additional experience section. Your related skills should be a part of your research experience section. Also do you have any teaching experience? For your presentation section I would make it look more like a list of publications, official title, authors, bold your name where you are in the line of authors. For you research experience what did you do specifically, it sounds like you put down what the lab does in general, the more specific the better. Did you make a plasmid expression vector, your cells and culture experience is very good, talk more about that.
  2. From what you've stated it sounds like you have a very strong application. All of the schools you mention should be within reach. I would just make sure that your personal statement is strong, get it revised by your PI and you should be good. Also make sure that you can explain your research well, this is important for your research summary and interviews. I know OHSU can be difficult to get into, not to mention Portland is a straight up weird place. I'm actually going to Drexel in the fall so I would assume you have a pretty good chance of getting in.
  3. What is your science GPA? Last 60 unit GPA? I went in at the same overall GPA of a 3.3, but my last 60 was about a 3.7. Kind of hard to give advice about certain schools if we don't know what your research interests are.
  4. You have a very competitive application and it seems like you have some excellent research experience. I agree with Ragneo in that your personal statement needs to be as strong as possible. Also I come from a small state school, not highly ranked at all, only local people have heard about it. My point is that when I went on interviews no one cared where I was from or what school I went to, they only cared about my research, if I could explain it to them and why I wanted to get a Ph.D.
  5. I was just emphasizing the importance of enjoying the subject that you want to do research in. But I totally understand if you wanted to leave an environment that you weren't happy in. For Drexel the Biomedical science program is very focused on Virology.
  6. I have a similar interest in virology, especially with viruses that can stay latent in cells. I'm a little confused about why you left the immunology lab when one of your interests is host pathogen interactions. Did you not like the PI, or did you just not like the research they were doing? I currently work in a host pathogen interaction lab and half the papers I read are Immunology based. I'm just saying that if you really want to work in host pathogen interactions you need to love both virology and immunology. For virology I would also look at Drexel in Philadelphia, virology heavy (HIV, Hepatitus, etc...)
  7. I agree with the other forum posters saying to apply to places with multiple schools in a relatively small area. I would also look at Philadelphia, they have Drexel, Thomas Jefferson, Penn, and Temple all within about 2-3 miles of each other. It gives you guys the greatest chance of not having to do a long distance relationship. Drexel and Penn definatley have strengths in virology and immunology. Good immunology isn't too hard to find but good virology can be a bit more difficult to find (another reason I recommend Philly, lots of virology research). To clarify further about finding virology is that a lot of top tier school have great virology but getting in is a definite crap shoot. Another question is has your SO finished her undergrad and it now doing research after being graduated?
  8. I'm going to Drexel for their Micro and immuno program (Ph.D.) and their Biochem program isn't online. There might be an option but they didn't say anything about it.
  9. nns91 is right in that the Immunology group at Berkley is very small. I looked at applying to Berkeley for their MCB program and found little no Virology research being done. I spoke with one of my professors who went to Berkeley and he said that any Virology people were at UCSF, this is also true for Immunology. If you think about it Berkeley doesn't have a med school and they don't specialize in biomedical research.
  10. Thank you everyone for your input! Blinchik did you ever visit UAB? And if so what did you think?
  11. Hello everyone I had a quick question about the reputation for Drexel University in Philadelphia. Being from the west coast people here think the world stops after Las Vegas. I was wondering if some east coast natives could inform me on the schools reputation. If anyone knows about their Biomedical Science program specifically that would be much appreciated.
  12. I would be careful if a graduate program is not focusing on the training of its graduate students. I know a lot of top schools have labs that are saturated with post docs and it becomes very difficult for graduate students to publish their work. This really becomes a problem if your program has a minimum publishing requirement. This is when the horror stories of a 7-8 year Ph. D. comes into play. As username1824 said if you are a self motivated student then you will be better off but, when push comes to shove the post-doc can pull rank and publish quicker. I would much rather go to a lower ranked school (rankings not being my first priority) and get more attention from my PI and work closer with them. I don't go to a well known school now but my training has been top notch and I've been complimented on my research experience on every interview. I'm not sure what your future plans are but if its to do a post-doc of some kind the more pubs you have and more grants you have written the better off you will be.
  13. I was there for Microbiology, which might as well be Microbiology and Immunology. When I went there my interviews were fantastic and their stipend is fantastic. I felt that if you say yes to them they will have your back all the way through.
  14. Hey GABA I was lurking your conversation and I too interviewed at UAB and I was seriously impressed. What theme did you interview for?
  15. What program at Drexel did you apply to?
  16. Interview at Drexel for Microbiology and Immunology! I'm not from the east coast so would someone be kind enough to let me know how people perceive Drexel over there?
  17. I applied for that one as well. I also see you have an invite for UCLA IMMP, I appled for that program as well and haven't heard anything.
  18. It looks like the Stanford invites are all for the Biology section of the Bioscience program. Any idea if the other sections of Bioscience are sending out invites?
  19. Just called a few ad comms, UC Davis microbiology is done sending invites and UCLA Bioscience (IMMP home area) is still reviewing.
  20. For all of your introductory classes (anything with a 1 next to it) I would imagine that if you did very well in the more advanced classes that those bad grades would be overlooked. My professors have told me that having an upward trend in grades is always good to see. I experienced the same rough sophomore year and now my last 60 unit GPA (Jr/Sr) is much better. The only thing I would have a hard time getting over would be that D in immunology. I see you want to major in Micro/Immuno/Viro or something along those lines. A D in immuno which at my school is a higher level class isn't going to sit well with PI's who run Immuno or Viro labs. I've been working in a Virology lab for a few years now and an advanced knowledge of Immunology is very important. Also bad grades can be supplemented with good research experience.
  21. Well now it's just an even more stressful waiting game. Does it say anything on your application status page?
  22. Been waiting to hear from that exact program today. Any idea if they're letting everyone know today or tomorrow?
  23. Your rejection may not have anything to do with your GRE scores, did they say that your GRE scores were too low so we rejected you? So one school rejected you, all you need is one school. My GRE scores are about where yours are, I'm not the best standardized test taker. One of the components that I think gets down played a bit in this forum is how important your SOP is. I went through revision after revision of my SOP with my PI to make sure it was up to snuff. Also is your research experience 2 years in one lab working on one project? I got an interview from University of Alabama Birmingham.
  24. I would agree. I take it you applied for the Microbiology and Immunology program?
