Canadian Universities MSW. The waiting game 2016 admissions
Bettyg replied to MSW&MD's topic in Social Workers Forum
For me I think changing one of my references made the difference this year after being waitlisted last year. Reading through these posts it's almost impossible to say what schools are looking for, areas where my application is weak seems to be areas where other applicants were strong, so I really do think they look at each individual. Last year ear I contacted both u of t and Laurier for feedback. Toronto was actually able to give me the most feedback and tell me areas to improve. -

hi all, i found out today i was accepted to Toronto's 2 year program. the letter was dated march 28. To everyone still waiting.... please don't let this get to you too hard. i applied to 3 schools last year and was rejected from all of them and spent weeks hating myself. in the end, the timing just wasn't right for me, and i worked to improve my application and my references and now it looks like it's the right time. don't give up hope yet as last year we were still getting results well into april, but if it turns out this isn't your year, don't let it change how you feel about yourself! sorry if this message sounds super condescending, i just know how awful it was checking this forum last year watching others get accepted and i hope other people don't feel as negative as i did!! good luck everyone!!! -

i am wondering the same thing! I would assume they have it noted on our files somewhere that we were previously waitlisted, but they wouldn't necessarily have our old applications to compare. i want to show that i'm committed to getting into this program so i've done xyz but i'm not sure if that would just bring their attention back to the negatives that made my application unsuccessful in the first place. -

Yes, pretty much. I have a second year ethics course that I took in my last semester (it was a substitution for a compulsory course I missed when I did a semester abroad) and I ended up with a 67 but in the same semester I had a 90 in my practicum course, and my placement was in a service that worked with vulnerable families. So basically it just boils down to if they consider I have good marks in relevant courses, or if they look at everything and wonder if I'll be able to do well in a masters program. -

Hey guys! I was active on this forum last year, and I told myself I wouldn't come back here this year as I felt this forum just made me more anxious than anything else, but here I am again I found there were a few posters last year who were very negative and didn't bring a good energy to this space so hopefully it will be different this year, especially when March rolls around and we are all refreshing our inbox 100 times a day. I applied to McGill, Laurier, and U of T for the 2 year programs, was waitlisted at u of t, and ultimately was rejected from there as well. I emailed U of T to ask for feedback on my application and they said my weakness was my grades. I had a decent average but i had some courses with very high marks and some with pretty low marks, which im sure doesn't look great. I've added 6 more months of direct experience in child protection, one of my references is better, and I also took 2 online courses from athabasca so hopefully this is my year! I am going to apply to u of t, windsor, and laurier. Also going to do the 1 year bsw at lakehead orillia. Good luck everyone! -

Hey guys, Just a post for those who were rejected or waitlisted last year. I was able to get feeback on my application. They basically told me what I already knew... My average was 78% and they didnt accept anyone under 80% this year (Laurier). She told me to focus on improving my grades as my experience profile was strong. That was my plan for this year anyways, but it feel sgreat to get that feedback and know I'm on the right track, and that there were parts of my application that did score highly so I'm not a total lost cause. Just thought that I would share that with everyone else who is working on their backup plans this year. -

Doesn't sound sour grapes at all to me. This is a discussion board, to discuss opinions, views, or things we have heard. People will do their own research anyways, no one is going to write off an entire program because of one negative post. Personally I think it's important to remain critical of institutions, especially as a social worker. -

I'm not sure if anyone can answer this question but thought I would ask. I have looked into both taking more courses at my undergrad university, or taking a few courses through Athabasca. Which looks better for schools? Athabasca works better for me because I am out of the country and their distance education is much better than my university's offerings. But I am wondering if it looks bad on an application that I have taken just a few extra courses from another university. Does anyone have thoughts? -

Question for people who didn't get in this year... I want to email my references and let them know I didn't get in, but I don't know how to phrase it so that they don't think I'm blaming them or anything. I basically want to let them know I'm trying again next year so expect to hear from me in October. Has anyone else done this? What did you say? -

I heard back about a month ago I think. I received an email telling me to check my file, and then when I logged on there was a document attached to my application and that was my rejection letter. I would definitely email or call, because you should have heard by now. -

Question for anyone who did the 1 year bsw at uwaterloo: I am confused about the prerequisites. Do you have to be accepted to the program to take the pre reqs online? Or can I just sign up to take them? -

To be honest there's no point in stressing about it now. There's nothing you can do. Start thinking about how you could improve your application for next year. -

I haven't received mine yet but I'm outside Canada so I am assuming it takes longer. I am sure U of T is done with their acceptances but I wish they would just let us know officially so I can start moving on. I need to book flights and it's killing me to watch the price go up every day! -

Unfortunately I think that's over. There's so many people on this forum who have been accepted so I don't think chances are on our side at this point. I just feel like I spent the last three or four weeks stressing and obsessing and it's made me miserable. So personally I am closing that door and focusing on how to improve my application for next year. -

Does anyone have experience with raising their gpa? I've been finished undergrad for 2 years so I'm not really sure how to go about this. What about taking a couple online courses from Athabasca? Or will admissions not count this as undergrad average? -

I had an 84 in research methods so I'm not sure if that's worth upgrading just to maybe get a few percent higher. I have a b+ overall for the last 2 years. I think the main issue is that although it evens out to a b+, I had an A in some courses and a b- in others. My grades are pretty varied it probably makes me look like an inconsistent student. I was hoping since I got an A in both of my practicum courses and my lower marks were electives, they would be ok with it. I felt comfortable with my experience, I have about 4000 paid hours for child protection (though only 1400 of that is Canadian) and 400 volunteer hours working with crown ward youth plus 350 practicum hours. Once I get the letter I will email to ask for feedback but just wondering what other people have done when they were in my position. -

Sorry to be a Debbie downer but there's too many people on this forum who have been accepted for me to have any hope left. So I'm now just switching focus to plan b. I think my weakness would definitely be my grades. Does anyone have experience with doing online classes to improve grades? Through Athabasca or something? I have no idea how this works. How do the schools view these extra random courses outside of degrees... Is there any point to doing it or do they not count? Anyone with some advice for me? -

I've never looked at LORIS before so I am not sure what it looked like. Mine doesnt have anything about references? But also doesn't say anything about acceptances so who knows. Maybe that's a rejection? -
