I am at UF, and I'll say FSU's program is pretty huge. I would say that have like 20 MA's and 20 Phd's, so their weird about admits. I would think you'd hear something soon! Have you heard anything about Tulane yet?

From what I heard (granted, this is complete rumor), the delay last year was due to the department not knowing when/how much funding they would get from the Graduate School itself. I hope it's sorted out this year, and I thank you for your help! Good luck!

Fortunately I do want to study the Latin historians and said that in my SOP, so I think I'm out of the looney bin on that account. I have been studying each language for three years so far, and have been tutoring others for a year. I really have no knowledge of what is typical in other undergraduate programs, and I really appreciate your feedback!

Of course. I'm primarily interested in semantics and gender studies, and particularly in ancient domesticity. For my thesis I'm analyzing the language and narrative technique of Cicero's Pro Caelio using principles from Foucault's History of Sexuality. Most of my writing during undergrad has examined instances in literature where socially/politically marginalized people break through the text semantically or they are blantantly corrupted by the author. As for authors, my main ones are Tacitus and Cicero for Latin and Demosthenes in Greek. Oh, and I happened to come across a posting of yours, LateAntique, about your GRE frustrations. The same exact thing happened to me. And thanks for the name compliment. The phrase in Greek is actually tattooed on my shoulder.

I have a Prof who knows some of UCI's dept, and she did not recommend it to me very highly. I got the impression that departmental strife was going on.

Actually, Florida is a MA/PhD but I'll probably just stay for the MA should I be accepted. I had higher hopes for applying to better schools, but my GRE scores would not have gotten me past the three seconds after the envelope was opened. But fortunately, I have great LORs and a SOP, a solid writing sample, a 3.9, and a thesis on Michel Foucualt and Cicero in the works. Hopefully these things will overshadow somewhat, but I can (as we all do) only speculate. I applied to Texas because I have a great LOR from a Prof who went there. Where are you applying and what program are you from?

My GRE scores are simply nothing special at all. I'm a student applying for an MA in Classics, and I took the test twice. First time: V: 580 Q: 440. Second time: V: 540 (?!) Q: 520. Both AW: 4. Anyway, my GPA is steady at a 3.9 and I have great LORs and a solid SOP. I've never really been able to shake standardized test anxiety, and I've appropriately applied to more moderate caliber schools. Any thoughts on my chances from those who have been/are in similar situations? Thanks!
