I've heard nothing from NYU either. .. I suspect we can safely assume we're rejected. -

Was anyone else at the UCI weekend? I thought that they had said we would hear something today. I have heard nothing. Worry. Worry. Worry. -
Paul --- you got two years guaranteed funding? Is this correct? Can you say- is this a fellowship, TA, readership, etc.?
-
I got an email....essentially, they would help with pursuing TA and readerships but nothing was guaranteed.

To the UCSC rejectee who knew their POI wasn't taking new students --- can you say who your POI is? I'm just curious because I've applied there a total of four times, to work with the same POI. I get the hint--they're just not that into me. However, instead of a generic electronic letter, I think I should get some small plaque though for ongoing support of the psychology department. -
I'm fairly local-ish (Los Angeles), so pending some other decisions, I'll likely attend. If i do, I'm happy to report back!

To those accepted to UCSD--- did you get the impression they offer funding for the visitation day?

I have an MA and have been working for three years at a research center at an R1 university. However, my background is in research psychology and the centers focus is in education. I was a valuable hire, because my skill set was slightly different (apparently MA students in education don't get much training in statistics or have a lot of experimental experience). So I saw the posting, made a cogent case for myself in the interview and voila! An education MA would be an asset here, perhaps developmental. More generally, you could certainly gain employment as a research assistant/ mid-level associate in other non-academic government orgs, NGOs, and think-tanks. It's just a matter of finding the right fit. I wouldn't expect to start higher than the mid 40's.

I emailed the graduate advisor and received this: "I have not been given final decisions from the Social Psychology admissions committee. I am sorry that I do not have more information for you at this time." -

Did anyone apply/hear from Claremont? (Applied Social Psychology) -
I was also accepted to UCSD Sociology! Flummoxed. Flabbergasted. Other F words that mean confuzzled. Paul Allen-I noticed on the website they seem to discourage the notion that all would be fully funded. Anyway, I suspect we got the same email/PDF attachment with the same sparse information. Best wishes to all in acceptance purgatory.

I completely agree that applying at this late date will likely not yield success---especially since "fit" is very important in the search--and the most time consuming part of the search. Still I root for the underdog so...off the top of my head: http://www.psych.ndsu.nodak.edu/index.php?f=19 http://www.unr.edu/cla/socpsy/ Also the APA posts programs with remaining openings on their site after mid-April but I'm not sure if these are just clinical. I've been to the website of virtually every social psych department out there (thanks index of the APA Guide to Graduate Study). In general, the less prestigous the program, the later the deadline. I'd use something like this and start at the bottom http://www.socialpsychology.org/ranking.htm The other problem you mentioned is your GRE. Many schools will take unofficial scores (and transcripts) to consider you. Also, if we're talking about the general (not subject) GRE , I find it generally takes less time than suggested as schools frequently have electronic acceptance of scores. Though, in my experience the less popular programs with later deadlines, have less sophisticated admin systems--maybe because they get fewer apps. Good luck!

Wow! Such specificity of information is great. Are you getting this info (e.g., Yale--I applied for social at Yale) from PIs or dept coordinators/admin? -

Hello fellow antsy social folk, UCI or UCSC, anyone, anyone? Also, PsychApplicant2011--I strongly suspect we had the same POI at USC--congratulations on your early success. -
Yes, thanks, that's what I meant. Congrats to you! How did it go?

Washington (Seattle)? Anyone hear anything?

Generally, I think they should acknowledge your application and provide information in a timelly and respectful manner. I agree with #1. I agree with 2,3, &4 partially. (2) Inquires regarding an applicant's application, in general, should be answered in a timely manner. Where necessary, form emails would suffice. (3) They could notify if a date changes, Things can happen. (4) UPdates yes. I think weekly updates might be a bit much. (5 Like Sparky said, departments should post anticipated number of opening in cohort (including taking no students), and delineate their application process (e.g., interview or no interview). (6) Everyone should be entitled to a letter/email instead of just a web link.

I'll pm you

That is fun trivia. I just thought they were at Florida...what school now?
-
I was waitlisted there last year -rejected this year
-
Off to UAE! Yeah, I like PJ Henry too.
-
You could actually just make a polite inquiry about your standing/ and whether or not they anticpate taking any students off the waitlist to give you a better idea. I was waitlisted last year at place who let me know I was on the waitlist, but it was really unlikely, and another place who just let me know directly the number of accepted/openings/ and my position on the waitlist. @ Alli Are you waitlisted at Depaul (experimental-social) this year? I haven't heard from them and didn't know if waitlist hadn't been issued or if they just haven't sent the rejection yet.

I'm confused- Tice/Baumeister are in California?

You guys are my people. ...I started with lit searches in July to find current publications in my field of interest. Then, since I was sure I wouldn't get into the top ranked schools, I went to the gurus in my field and looked for their recent graduates. Those recent graduates went to top-ranked schools but get tenure track positions at slightly lower ranked schools. Then I turned to lists- I used the APA Guide to Graduate Study, just flipped to the appendix, made an excel spreadsheet, and started systematically visiting every program. However one thing I noticed which I think is very important is that the APA guide doesn't list what isn't in a Psychology Dept. exclusively. For example, University of Nevada, Reno has a social psychology program but it's interdisciplinary with psychology and sociology professors. I only know about the program because I looked up the author from an article I like. Similarly, the NRC rankings don't list DePaul's social psych program. Technically-it's experimental psychology, but with different areas of focus. Who knows how many of these rogue programs go unnoticed because of listing issues?
