  1. Hi all, University of Toronto publishes their placement record from 2002 onwards here: http://graduate.philosophy.utoronto.ca/files/2015/02/Placement-record-updated-feb2_2015.pdf I find the record peculiar. Of all Toronto PhDs who graduated between 2002 and 2010, NO ONE has landed a permanent job at a top 30 department. This is quite worrying. But then from 2011 onwards the record suddenly became much much better, with people landing post-docs at Harvard, NYU, UPenn and Cambridge, and some landing permanent jobs at UNC, UC-Riverside, etc. Does anyone know what happened there? Any general comment on Toronto's placement prospects would be very welcome too. I have an acceptance there and thinking of taking it up. Thanks
  2. Two CUNY acceptances posted. Congrats to those who got them! But I guess that's gloomy news for those of us waiting....
  3. Just to say that I agree with Atropos and Chai Tea. Eigen almost sounded like he was trying to teach people how to use forums in a civilized manner. I found that to be slightly patronizing.
  4. Wow, I find your post extremely useful, @tbb. Really appreciate your advice.
  5. Maybe the department will notify applicants before the Graduate Admissions Office will?
  6. I haven't received a rejection either. I think I've seen at least 8-10 people who haven't. So chances are the posted rejections were just the first batch...... More...will...come..... And now someone posted a rejection by Stanford. Damn, these programs keep giving us hope.
  7. And if he says yes, then you're going to ask "How do you know that you weren't dreaming, or being deceived by a malicious demon?" Am I right?
  8. That was an excellent, insightful piece of info, @ianfaircloud. Thanks a lot for it.
  9. Congrats to those accepted to UNC! And fellow Brown rejects, let us sob in solidarity.
  10. I remember someone here said that UCLA keeps an internal wait-list. Do you know what's the etiquette in soliciting, and when would be a good time to do that?
  11. Hi all, Now that a number of us have received some acceptances with invitations to campus visits, I want to ask you how you reply to those invitations. Suppose, for example, you get two invitations from University A and University B. And suppose that the two visits are scheduled to be reasonably close to each other (as they should be in reality - around late March). In this case, can you ask University A to pay for a flight from your hometown to city A, and a flight from city A to city B, instead of a return flight back to your hometown? Will it look weird? This question is especially important if you're an international student. It wouldn't make sense for you to visit university A and then fly back to your country before flying into the US again to visit university B. Normally do they let you book your own tickets and reimburse you, or do they book the tickets for you? The acceptance email I got yesterday said "Please contact me about booking [flight tickets]". Thanks for your input!
  12. What a turbulent time! Posts about Virginia, Brown, Toronto, UCLA, and Princeton all on the same day. (It's already past 2am where I live, and I'm staying up, refreshing the result page every 10 minutes. ) EDIT: Got an acceptance from Toronto!
  13. Congrats to everyone who got offers today and yesterday! Berkeley has been silent on me - so I'm in a down mode at the moment , half-despairing, half-praying that they haven't released all their offers. Good luck to you fellow Berkeley applicants!
  14. Ditto on Mark Schroeder! Have read a few pieces by him - all extremely insightful.
