  1. Hey, congrats OP on the ETH acceptance! I'm currently attending the RSC masters at ETH, and can say that it's really great. Would just like to write that there are no ETH Engineering students going to Germany to look for work due to lack of work in Switzerland. There are plenty of companies hiring ETH students here, and they pay very well. Friends from the RSC program are doing (well-paid) internships at Facebook, Google, Bosch, Intel, IBM, Disney Research, etc.

If you're thinking of doing a phd after, ETH is a really great place to do it. Takes about 3 years after you finish the masters, and also pays very well (more than makes up for the cost of living).

Edit: Can try to to answer some of your questions:

    • Are there any chances of a Research Assistantship at ETH that could pay my cost-of-attendance?

Yes. There is the ESOP program (which if you didn't apply for at admission, it's too late to apply for). I applied and didn't get it, but I asked my tutor if he would have any "research assistant"-like positions open, and they hired me. Working 15 hours a week in the semester, and I can work up to full time in the semester breaks (42 hours). It pays quite well.

    • What are the chances of PhD in well-reputed universities/research groups and job opportunities at both places? From where would it be easier to get a PhD/research post at the lab of my choice after completing MS?

You'll be able to get into PhD programs in the US with an ETH degree. It's well known and respected, and improving every year still.

    • Will ETH be stronger on the theoretical basis standpoint and CMU on the practical standpoint respectively?

ETH is much more theoretical than I expected for an engineering program. I took the Machine Learning course from Buhmann last semester and it was almost entirely theoretical and proof based. That said, there are many courses that offer projects.

    • Will there be a balance of both or will one university offer a better balance than the other?

Work-life balance at ETH is hard. Much harder than at my previous Uni. But, I'm also working and studying at the same time, which is not as common here as in the US.

    •  I personally have the impression that CMU will focus more on the engineering aspect and how to build solutions and on the other hand, ETH will be deeper into the theoretical aspects and less so into the implementation parts. What are your thoughts?

    See above.

    • Will the election of Trump affect foreign students in terms of the flow of funding, etc? Or are those things entirely in the hands of the university?

    Assuming this is about CMU.

    • Has anyone have had any experiences with ProdigyFinance? Good or Bad?

    No, sorry.

  2. Maybe too late, but I had a similar problem in Switzerland. I was mailing documents to the uni here from the US, and I just brought the diploma and transcript to my bank, the lady made a copy of both and typed a note saying that she certifies that it is a copy of the diploma I gave her. She then notarized everything. No problems from the uni. I sent them to Uni Stuttgart, and Hochschule Reutlingen as well.

Same here. I don't even think I really have that great of a chance of getting an award, and I won't be super bummed if I don't, but I just want to know either way. I feel like I've been anxiously waiting on one thing or another since the end of October!

Same position. Except this is my second year applying to grad schools :( been waiting since November of last year. Didn't get funding anywhere, so I took an extended internship and reapplied for spring and fall 2016. Waiting for the GRFP, but I can't accept it even if I get it. Non-US master's program in the fall.

Congrats to all accepted to ESOP.

Chances of getting ESOP are quite slim in general. I have read in "ETH yearly report 2013" that  38 ESOPs were given out that year.  So we have 38 ESOPs and approx. 2000 admissions, well the ratio is not optimistic at all.

Time to find $21,000 elsewhere for my visa application :rolleyes:

  5. I was admitted to the Robotics, Systems and Control MSc on March 1, and I received my admissions letter and registration form today, March 7 (in N.Y., USA). I received no additional requirements, much to my surprise as I have a B.Sc. in Applied Physics from a liberal arts university. It does seem to heavily depend on who evaluates your profile. My assigned tutor is the professor who responded to my email containing the ESOP proposal, so I believe applying for the ESOP helped my application, whether I ultimately receive the award or not. (For future applicants: make sure your idea is reasonably well suited to one or more professors research. They must select you! My research proposal didn't fit exactly, but in an email response from my tutor (before acceptance), he suggested a way the project could be easily adapted to fit the equipment and projects they already have on hand). The letter instructed me to mail in the signed original enrollment form (enclosed with the acceptance letter), my original university and high-school diplomas (not copies), and a copy of my passport data page. The originals will be returned in person when I pick up documents from ETH before the fall semester.

I tried to include any information that might be interesting or useful to future applicants. If you'd like to know anything else, please let me know.

Some folks in the 2014 and 2015 threads posted timelines for future applicants. I'll post mine now for future reference, and update this post when I hear the results of the ESOP.

Program: Robotics, Systems and Control M.Sc.
    Applied: November 27, 2015
    ESOP Interview: None
    Acceptance email: March 1, 2016
Acceptance letter, by mail: March 7, 2016
    ESOP Result: ???

If you can afford Zurich, you're doing better than me already ;)

By "afford" I guess I mean pay for the first six months until I'm allowed to get a job :P . Even with the high cost of living in Zurich, it's still cheaper than a public university in the US... I've been waiting tables since I got home from Germany and saving all the money. It's not a lot, but it's a start :D

    Congrats @canas

My surname starts with D and I was notified 3 weeks ago. But as mine was for EE, not sure if it helps with your sample points.

Congratulations on acceptance to those who were!

@rehab-robotics I thought you were going to Stuttgart for the Summer? What's the plan?

That was the plan. But Zurich was the first choice. I don't think I really have enough money saved to live in Stuttgart for the summer and then pay for Zurich.

Congrats to everyone accepted! Keeping my fingers crossed/ "thumbs pressed" for everyone still waiting.

    Congrats!

I can't say for sure.. My last name likely falls somewhere in the middle of their list (starts with "L") and my acceptances for both CS MSci and RSC MSci came after about 5-6 people had already posted theirs on gradcafe. Additionally, my friend (who also applied to both CS and RSC) has had absolutely no word from either programmes and his name is almost guaranteed to be at the very bottom of the list (starts with "Z").

I guess based on this info alone, it's possible that they take it alphabetically, but I'm still somewhat doubtful.

My last name starts with T and I heard at 5:40 a.m. EST. About an hour after you? We need a few more sample points :D

    Congrats!

So, do they send the emails in alphabetical order or do you think is it random?

We could compile a list of our initials with acceptance dates and times haha.

But, as a note for future applicants, they do send the emails individually at different times. Not like the batch systems at other universities where they press a button to send a batch of notifications. (For people like me. I was sad reading the thread this morning thinking I wouldn't hear today)

Quick update on my last post: I just got accepted to Robotics, Systems and Control! So the lack of "withdraw" button is 100% not an automatic rejection, for anyone still in doubt.

Had anyone else got CS acceptances over the past few days? Is there still hope for my friend who's waiting on a Theoretical Computer Science response?

Congrats! Didn't you have another friend that applied to RSC? I'm still waiting to hear :/

Actually now that you mention it, fair enough. Also saw this regarding to timeframe:

Yeah, so it may be up to the department who they recommend for scholarships. They may do any combination of 1) immediately recommending applicants with outstanding profiles/ proposals 2) interview students before giving recommendations. If they're allowed 5 recommendations, maybe they pick the two best with no interview, then interview ten people for the last three recommendation spots.

I guess we'll see what happens :) hoping for more admissions results for Robotics tomorrow (including my admission result please!)

  12. 2 hours ago, thingii said:

I suppose that means for us who haven't got the ESOP interview, the scholarship dream is gone then...

But on the other hand, congratulations on your acceptance + scholarship prospective! Well done

There was a person a year or two ago that posted in this thread that got the ESOP without an interview. It depends on the department it seems. Also, departments sometimes offer assistantships and scholarships in rare cases. It would definitely be better to get an interview, but there is still a small chance.

    EDIT: Here is the link

Hey guys! Just to keep adding information about the withdraw bottom... I don't have it anymore. I have it this noon, but this afternoon it disappeared...So I imagine that they just typed "rejected" in the system.

    What about you?

At this point I'm starting to feel better and to think this happens when it is under review. In a thread full of ESOP applicants, 5 or 6 of us have no withdraw button (everyone from robotics systems and control, plus you in physics). I can't imagine that every person in this thread that is applying to RSC will get rejected.

  14. 2 hours ago, canas said:

It would be really useful if somebody who got rejected shares the availability of the withdrawn bottom..

Congrats to everyone who got accepted this week!

Agreed. I'm feeling better though, because everyone who applied to Robotics, systems and control seems to have the button disappeared. It seems unlikely (but possible) they we're all rejected.

I would like to add fuel to the fire regarding Withdraw button :D

I don't have it any more. But 3 days ago, when I logged to eApply system last time, it was present. So it disappeared recently.

And yes, I also didn't get decision by now) So it is either under review or rejected.

Same, mine disappeared recently. Also, no news for me today.

  16. 4 hours ago, thingii said:

I can say mine looks like what @canas has uploaded. I've hit my attachment limit apparently O_O.

 not looking good for me then... hoping for some news tomorrow morning, one way or another. I have to get German health insurance, housing and a flight before April 1 if I get rejected to Zurich! I just hope they make it quick :D

  17. 8 hours ago, thingii said:

Yes me too. And yes back to Zurich.

Show a screenshot? I just logged in to eApply and my Withdraw button is there still.

I remember for a week in January (whilst the Stuttgart situation was happening), my ETHZ application was "withdrawn" in eApply, and I pretty much had a heart attack and a seizure simultaneously.

If you were accepted and the withdraw button is still there, then I feel like I'm probably already marked "rejected" in the system and therefore can't withdraw my application.

Can anyone else, accepted or rejected, confirm this?

One of my friends is in the same position as you. Met a German girl on exchange in Canada, and then they both went to Stuttgart.

Oh yes I have called them, haha. The person who picked up said to contact his boss (the Course Director), by email (surprise surprise), with highest priority - who then forwarded it on to the people who I'd been emailing originally, and they sent me what I added in the second screenshot. So we've come to a circle.

Long story short, although it's not my top preference, I still want (and every applicant deserves) a fair application.

I hope they straighten it out for you soon then.

On the topic of Zurich though; I swear there was a "Withdraw application" button on the eApply page after logging in. It's gone now on mine, but nothing else has changed. Does anyone else remember seeing it, or am I already having serious memory issues?

Not at all too much information - it's all helpful! :) And congratulations to you both, I don't have anyone going with me.

It seems like they've left it rather late. I suppose it's because Summer semester intake is not as high as Winter semester, there's probably less applications to process. I agree with you that it seems quite poorly written, but I have seen worse!

Nevertheless, green ticks are always good. I've attached what mine looks like - this has not changed since I submitted, when the system was opened in November (keenness), and after so many back and forth emails, it's still quite ambiguous.

    Screen Shot 2016-02-18 at 14.26.42.png

Thanks :) she's German and already over there, so it's more like I'm meeting her there :P

Okay, I'd give them a call. I'm sure the departments differ in how they handle things, but my "formal admissions requirements" were checked within a few days of submission (I also submitted a winter semester application at the same time that is sitting with the one green checkmark). It just seemed like they just made sure I submitted the correct paperwork. Your admission type is also different, although I'm not sure what each of them means.

Maybe they can tell you when they plan on checking the formal requirements? The German universities take a notoriously long time to do admissions, even for international students. Some people don't get a letter until a few weeks before the semester starts because people drop out. But I tend to worry about being forgotten (as another university recently did to me for Spring semester in the US), so I'd be calling them until I got a clear answer haha.

Congratulations to you!! Were you notified by/are there green checkmarks in the C@MPUS system?

My application was for Winter 2016. I had a lot of issues with the C@MPUS system - at one stage they couldn't find a submitted application. Did you have issues as well?

Thank you! I'm happy to have a good place to study and also a way to be in Germany again.

I didn't really have any issues with the C@MPUS system yet... it seems a little shaky and poorly written though. Were you able to get it figured out?

There are green checkmarks in C@MPUS. Attached an image of what it looked like right after acceptance. My girlfriend also applied to Stuttgart, but to a different program, and her program didn't have the ranking information. So it varies by program. On the Thursday before my acceptance, the "qualifying admissions requirements" changed from "not checked" to "fulfilled." On friday, the Ranking boxes showed up, but said "the procedure has not yet been started." Then Monday I randomly checked around 4 pm German time and all the ranking information was filled in, but "Admission" was still marked "not done yet." I got an email at 20:15 (German time) that night with the acceptance. When my girlfriend got her acceptance it also came around 20:13 on an earlier date, so it seems to be an automated system. It came from "Team des Studiensekretariates" email address "no-reply-studiensekretariat@uni-stuttgart.de". Check your spam filter too, the acceptance got caught in hers but not in mine.

Sorry if that's too much information, but I'm hoping it serves as a reference to someone in the future. I was going a bit crazy wondering why it was changing so slowly and why they took so long to decide for spring semester.

That's my current plan. Living costs is what makes ETHZ not my number 1 preference.

I just noticed in your signature you applied to U Stuttgart. I just got accepted to the international MSc Computer Science program on Monday (for summer 2016). It looks like you still haven't heard anything from then? Is it for summer or winter?

I have sent an email to the financial aid office asking whether my scholarship documents have arrived at all (since I haven't  received anything about them).. Got a reply that the ESOP commission will be at the beginning of March, should have the decision middle/end of March, nothing more.. So I am supposed to accept my offer even though it depends on the scholarship decision .. ?

I suppose you could just accept the offer, then if you don't get the ESOP retract it? Seems like not a great thing to do, as you'd be taking a spot they could give to someone else sooner, but they aren't leaving you with much of a choice here...

  23. So I sent my idea for the ESOP proposal to a few professors before applying (reused my GRFP proposal), to try to gauge their interest. A good number of them responded (to my surprise) with a bit of enthusiasm. I sent these emails in early November, so I had forgotten about them and who had or hadn't answered me. I got an email on Wednesday from a professor, saying "during a recent meeting I realized you had emailed me last year and I never got back to you... my apologies... I believe you should hear back from Zurich soon. If it should be positive, and you decide to come here, I'd very much like to discuss your proposal. It doesn't fit exactly into our lab, but [then he suggests how we could adapt current hardware and research to fit my project]." (dots are mine, trying to cut down the length).

While not directly ESOP related, I feel like this is good news. He wouldn't have taken the time to write me back if there would bad things said about my application... right?...
