Blerggghhh this is my second year waiting on this admissions nonsense. It's really the worst waiting to hear back
-
Ah... I haven't seen anything on here for robotics, systems and control. What program are you applying for?
-
Hey, also waiting on both. Last year this was the week of the first wave of admission acceptances. Best of luck to you!

When I applied (2011), the solicitation didn't even request separate statements. This is the first year that the solicitation has requested both separate statements and headings for Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts (last year's solicitation did not mention headings), so there's no way to know what the procedures are this year. My guess would be that not having separate statements with headings will not lead to automatic disqualification, but it will likely put the application at a disadvantage with most reviewers for not having the expected format.
I also didn't thoroughly reread the solicitation this year, so my personal statement and research statements don't have headings for these. I wouldn't be that concerned, since most reviewers will likely have done this for multiple years before and will be familiar with the old (and IMO better and less clunky) format. I would be willing to bet that a lot of the other applicants did the same.

Sorry to hear that, but I would suggest not saying anything, since the PI will have that LOR on hand and could be adapted to another fellowship (Ford foundation?).
Edit: Sorry, can't reply to OP since forum is quoting the wrong person. This should not be a reply to rehab-robotics.
That's strange... I hope I didn't submit mine late .
But yeah, your letter writers won't be told that you were rejected for submitting late. So you could do what DavidB144 said. Just have an explanation prepared for them (whatever that means to you) in April when reviews come back. I don't know if it's common for professors to ask to see your reviewers' comments.

Submitted for mechanical engineering. Here's to another long 5 months

I had 7 references. They were footnotes, every single paper with >2 authors was 'et al.', and I used abbreviations in journal names. Seriously, there are no guidelines for the references, so do what you have to do to save space. It won't disqualify you.
It is an awkward balancing act though. Too few references and your project idea isn't theoretically supported. Too many and it's unoriginal.

There aren't rules, as reference styles are field-specific. I et al'd when there were 6 or more authors, but I still listed the first 3 authors (+et al). Also choose references wisely- you don't need many. Also reviews are great since they usually only have 1 or 2 authors.
I had three or four references last year, and I had a reviewer complain there weren't enough references. How many would you say is enough?

Looks great. Was just struggling with this... I was going to use the IEEE Transactions style, since it used 10-point font as well.
I may end up just "hard coding" a bibliography and put everything in a single line in the tex file. That way the layout engine will not add carriage returns. I've seen some proposals where they manage to fit 10 or more references. Currently I only have room for 4!
Anyway, please post the .bst file!

Anyone know if we can add headers/footers to our statements? I can't find anything about it on the solicitation form...
Down to the final edits
You can have headers and footers, but the overall margins must be whatever NSF specifies, including headers and footers (1" all around? I don't remember, I'm using my template from last year).

I did! I applied twice as an 'undergrad' (once while still in undergrad, the second time while reapplying after deciding to take 2 gap years) and got it as a first year grad student. As long as you haven't taken more than whatever number it is of grad hours, you're golden.
Ah awesome, congrats! I imagine you addressed the gap years in the personal statement? That probably made your application more interesting to the reviewers.

Putting my application in again this year. Got VG/G VG/VG VG/VG last year as an undergrad senior. Kind of mixed feeling about the reviewers comments. Some comments were helpful, but others were totally off target (saying I was missing things that were in bold print in my papers). Likely revising it a bit and submitting almost the same things this year...
An aside: I ended up postponing graduate school until spring 2016 because of an internship offer, so I can apply as an undergrad senior again (I think), because I haven't taken any grad classes. Has anyone else done this?

Yup, super disappointing. Two of my reviewers were extremely supportive of my transition from mathematics to life sciences and were happy with my academic record (both gave E/E), but my last reviewer specifically said that I should have applied for the award in applied mathematics instead of life sciences for a biophysics proposal. It's upsetting because the other two sounded really enthusiastic about my application.
Yepp. Very similar. Good luck with your field change!
-
That's kind of...odd. I can't believe they would bash you for going outside of prior experience. God forbid you learn something new.
Nice job with such rapid turnaround, though!
I kind of got bashed for the same thing. Switching from physics to BME.

Senior undergrad. No award, no HM. VG/VG, VG/G, VG/VG.
Congrats to everyone that won!

I'm planning on trying to sleep through Monday night, but I thought it would be cool to be woken up right away if I happen to win it.
I wrote a quick python script and put on it github here https://github.com/luketaverne/StressReducer. Put your name in (and change my youtube video url if you want to), and have it run periodically with cron (on mac/linux), and if your name is in the winner list it will open and play your YouTube video.
Good luck everyone!

I'll add to the train. I generally wake up randomly in the middle of the night so I just remembered to check my phone for the email when I did. Seeing the email and then falling back asleep worked out pretty well for me. I wasn't anxious when I woke up and apparently dealt with it while I was asleep. It sucked still, but it was better than going to sleep in a bad mood and waking up tired and still in a bad mood.
I'm emailing people in Germany about work this summer, so I've gotten in the habit of doing this as well. Wake up around 5, answer emails and check for GRFP news, go back to sleep. Hoping I can do what you did and still be able to fall asleep after reading the news.

It looks like rejections went out to some Northwestern BME PhD applicants today. I didn't get one, but I also didn't get an interview or invited to visit. The same thing happened with me and UPenn's ESE PhD program today... What is this?...

I just realized that Game of Thrones starts the week after decisions. A nice consolation prize if I don't get it.
And a nice celebration if you do.

I haven't had nearly enough Regular Show in my life recently.

I had a nightmare last night that I didn't get it, and the reviewers made me feel awful about my proposal. They gave me a bunch of "poor" rankings and said it was a waste of time and money. Fairly upsetting.
Two more weeks.
