I saw the rejections from USC on the results page and my heart sunk thinking that it might be you. What a sign of how intensely competitive these programs are with such highly qualified applicants not getting in. I have been following your posts and was hoping to hear that you had good news. I recently got accepted to a program that I am totally psyched about and I have felt about 24 hours of bliss, peace and relief.

It is nice to hear some good news! Congrats to the people who got UCSB, NYU and Yale acceptances. I am thinking about how good it will feel to get an acceptance and to know you have funding too.

Thanks for the info on Emory. I wonder if it is the same for UT Austin. I have not heard anything from either one. I think it is interesting that the percentage of acceptances are probably very low so a lot of very strong candidates don't get in.

Thanks for the update on Emory. I can't find anything on their website about interviews. The only way I have heard about them is through this forum.

I think it is important to put some specific professors, if nothing else than to show that you researched their program. Of course, you want to make sure that the ones you name are not off on sabbatical or teaching at another university. But then again, what do I know...

I checked my status on UT-Austin and it says that my application is "in review."

Hi all, I don't have any news, but I will be happy to share as soon as I do. I am so psyched to do Spanish and French, I applied to a number of Comp Lit Ph.D. programs and two Spanish MA programs as sort of a contingency. I don't know how an Admissions Committee will view my unusual background. It is really fun to check this forum because I hope to hear good news from you all or help each other through the intensity of waiting. I am interested in the "untranslatable", which can come about about through word play . . . like this. [i am a lawyer so I lie for a living, but at least I am honest about it ] How about this one from Frozen: "We're gonna fix you up with a fixer-upper." Or this one: "la dupla creativa de Lennon-McCartney." I cannot translate this in my native language? I guess I'll go with "songwriting duo."

I had a girlfriend who tried to deter me from selecting my best options. I had already applied before we started dating. I did not get a Fullbright, but I am talking about law school. I modified my plans to appease her and have since regretted certain parts of that decision. I am just wondering if your parents fully understand what an honor it is and what an amazing experience this could be for you. Look at how hard you worked on the application. Hopefully your friends are psyched for you. How about your siblings if you have any? As an undergrad,I applied for a Fullbright and did not get it even though I spoke two foreign languages. I am psyched for you vicariously.

Irealize I should give more useful information in case others are interested. I had some good communications with someone on the staff previously. I think she may have helped me get the informal interview. They suggested I apply for a Fellowship, something that I could not have known from the University's web pages. I did not bring up the topic, but the director of the program can recommend certain candidates for a Fellowship. I generally thought that applicants were automatically considered for these, but I think the phone call helped. I really appreciate what I perceive as a supportive tone on this forum. We are all in the same proverbial boat. A little more about my unusual situation.... Soy abogado y hablo espanol con mis clientes, pero no tengo formación académica en español. Por lo tanto, mi francés podría ser un mecanismo, a través de la literatura comparativa, para acceder a perfeccionar mi español al nivel más avanzando. Quisiera trabajar en los dos idiomas.

Mine was a university that I really want, but not Ivy League. It was comp lit, not Spanish. They scheduled it with me ahead of time, very informal, but it was a very positive experience. I applied to TA in French or Spanish.

I have a background in French and literary theory, but want to work in Spanish because that is the language I use most professionally (besides English). It looks like we are generating some momentum on this thread. I am in a similar position to Katia and Fancypants. I want to work in other languages apart from English, but not entirely exclusive of English. I have heard various advice about how many applications one should fill out. I have applied to seven programs, and maybe one more. Is that crazy?

I am applying to some comp lit programs. I want to see if we have an ongoing dialogue here since the last post was several weeks ago. Is this the right spot for us comp lit folks?

I am applying for comp lit programs and was thinking I might be nuts that I applied to so many programs (7). Is that too few? I applied to Minnesota, South Carolina, Michigan, Minnesota, Texas, Princeton and Yale.

I am applying for Comparative Literature. I took an ACTFL exam in Spanish and scored Advanced Low. I feel like I should have tested at Advanced Medium. French is my second language. I have no formal coursework in Spanish but would like to use it as my 3rd language. Any thoughts on the ACTFL oral exam. (A computer asks you questions and they grade you anonymously based on the recording.

Anyone else applying to Comparative Literature programs out there? Should we compare notes?
