So I just recently bought this laptop, and I definitely couldn't be happier. A little over a grand for a great machine. I have a dual boot going with Windows and Linux Mint, and on the SSD both of them boot in seconds. Everything runs amazing.

I shopped around a while a few months back and this was the best option I could come up with. It hasn't let me down yet.

Hey! I just got into SFSU's Astronomy program, and I'm looking to get a place with some other students! Anyone on here interested? I'm looking for a cheaper place (SFSU's funding isn't the most ideal) and I'm open to many different areas.

I'm happy to know I'm officially pursuing my PhD. With that said, I'm strongly considering a tattoo this summer before I go.
It would simply be text, ideally located on the inside of my forearm, which would make it fairly visible unless I wear long sleeves. Should I have any concerns being a grad student/TA/teacher with a visible tattoo?
It would be completely inoffensive and is more of a personal message to myself than anything else. I don't think it would make a difference in getting an academic job down the line but I'd like some thoughts.
As an astronomer with a full sleeve on one arm and a Mike Wazowski tattoo on the other, I giggled a little bit at this post.
I don't know if it's only in the hard sciences, but it seems to me the field of academia truly doesn't care what you look like.
Edit: I will note that I wear long-sleeves during more important academic events, and I probably will always wear a long-sleeve when TAing. If I ever become a professor, though... bye bye restraint!

You're absolutely right. I elaborated more on my research and my research goals and I got to the point where I was trying smaller fonts to fit it all on two pages. No point in wasting space on the grade stuff. Thanks for the advice.

Yeah, that's what I figured. It's treated now and I'm much better at concentrating on my work. I think I will still leave this bit out, though.

Thank you all for the advice. One more question -- I have severe ADD that went untreated for most of my college education, is this something I should mention?

Thanks for the help. I currently have a short paragraph describing my hectic work schedule throughout undergrad, which led me to getting a C in a pretty important class. The rest of my grades in relative classes are Bs and above, so I figured a little mention of one specific case wouldn't hurt.

Hi everyone,
For reference, I'm an astronomy applicant (physics degree) with a pretty strong undergraduate research profile. I've heard that if your grades are lower than you expect the average to be, it may be advisable to offer a brief explanation in your statement. I have a lower GPA (PHY 3.22, OVR 3.11), and I think I should just mention it briefly. Some of the programs I'm applying to have Master's degrees as well -- should I mention in this section that I would be willing to begin in that program to demonstrate my ability to do the coursework? I've heard of this happening at various universities before.
Thanks in advance. -
Probably gonna have to agree with the OP that it was as soon as I clicked my first "submit" button. I don't have a perfect profile by any means, but I think I have a decent shot at the schools I'm applying to. That being said, two months ago I was certain I'd get into a school, seeing as I'm putting in 12 apps to mostly safer programs. Now that I've clicked submit... I'm starting to freak! I dunno how I can possibly wait two months to hear back... all I need is one acceptance letter and I'll feel soooooooooo much better.
Summer Jobs befORE a Master's

I did valet for many years during college. Park nice cars and make decent tips during the summer. Winter is a different story. It's not hard work if you know how to interact positively with people. Go to a local hotel and see if there's something like that.
Also, accounting positions at medium-sized businesses. For example, the hotel I worked at frequently had ~16/hour office and accounting jobs available to anyone with half a brain. They were eager to give anyone who looked fancy enough on paper a job.
