  1. Oh so you were offered a spot off of the wait list? That must mean they are accepting people now off of the list, and they won't have to wait until the week before April 15th. I wonder if anyone else has been offered a spot off the waiting list too.....are you thinking of accepting or going somewhere else?
  2. So only five students? That means the odds of any one student getting in off of the wait list are pretty slim, considering that Madison has a huge wait list and will probably only accept 2-3 at most off of that list. Not very encouraging is right. Incidentally how do you know Madison is only accepting five students this year?
  3. Yeah, I take it as (slightly) positive news. I think she wouldn't have invited me in if she were going to tell me something negative, because there would be no need to and she offered completely of her own initiative. So hopefully I'll at least know my position on the wait list by the end of next week. Hopefully.
  4. S/he said s/he doesn't expect it will budge *before* the end of next week (the week ending March 20th). S/he said come in Thursday or Friday (March 19th or 20th) and s/he will "fill me in."
  5. I emailed one of the schools I applied to and was told I was just put on the wait list. The director of graduate admissions said s/he doesn't expect the wait list to budge substantially before the end of next week, and s/he said I should swing by then and s/he would "fill me in" (I live very close to the school and am currently a masters student there in philosophy applying for the PhD. I appreciated the offer to fill me in, but I'm slightly confused. Is this a positive sign or a negative sign. From what s/he said the wait list will budge significantly by the end of next week, so does that mean I may get an acceptance, or just that I won't get an acceptance by then, but they'll have a better idea of where I stand and will talk to me about it?
  6. Well unfortunately I did say I wanted to work with her, and I put no one else. So *sigh* I probably have to give the another personal statement.
  7. I put down that I wanted to work with Sarah Paul at Wisconsin. I am currently wait listed there now. I wonder if it will negatively affect my application if she goes to UC Irvine...
  8. The link doesn't work. Is Sarah Paul definitely accepting an offer from UC Irvine and leaving Wisconsin?
  9. I mean, maybe I'm just an optimist, but I think your areas of interest do not put you at a disadvantage, because in addition to ethics and philosophy of science, they probably want a diverse incoming class as well. I don't think they just want to concentrate in those two areas, because then the range of interests of the class would be too narrow. I think it will work out for you that there are probably fewer people in philosophy of mind and language applying to Wisconsin than in ethics and philosophy of science, so if their wait list is AOI-divided, that will help you. Just my two cents.
  10. I think practically speaking we can infer a few general things about our chances. Like if Russ Shafer-Landau is leaving, that is going to flush a lot of ethics people out who are going to go elsewhere. And whether or not their list is divided by AOI, if they have a lot fewer ethics people on board compared to last year, that will free them up to take some waitlisted people from other areas too. So I think it works out either way. I think Nastasya that they are deliberately being tight-lipped because they just don't want to divulge any information. As you can imagine, I think that they have a *little* bit of an idea who they want off of their list and in what specific order. There's no way it's just a "roll of the dice," despite what the DGS said. For some reason, they just don't want to show their hand yet, at least not this early. But I do believe that people declining their offers in ethics and the several people (now more than three) on the forum here who have declined wait list spots, plus Precisely_Terrified, who indicated she declined an acceptance offer from UW Madison, bodes well.
  11. So UW Madison us being very tight lipped about their wait list. Hopefully more info will be available in another few weeks. Qualiafreak, what is your AOI, if you don't mind me asking? Is it philosophy of mind?
  12. Does anybody know *for sure* whether UW Madison's wait list is divided by AOI? There seems to be a lot of speculation, but little that anyone knows for sure.
  13. Actually my AOI is ethics, so I hope I'll be in a good position!
  14. Does anyone think the loss of Russ Shafer Landau will impact people's decisions on whether to accept admissions offers to UW Madison, or take themselves off the waitlist? Is UW Madison's wait list ranked? How many people are on it? I imagine like 30..,.
  15. Has anyone still not heard from CUNY? I'm assuming by now that I definitely was rejected, but it would still be nice to receive official word of this from the department.
  16. Ok so then only wait lists and rejections. Makes sense.
  17. Has Toronto sent out rejections yet? I imagine that's the only thing left for them to send out.
  18. I still haven't heard back from CUNY. I think that, whatever our status, they tend to send out acceptances, wait lists, and rejections over a longer time period than most other schools. So think of it this way: the fact that CUNY has sent out two rounds of rejections, and we still haven't heard anything, means we are still in the running. I inquired to the department chair whether CUNY started sending out notices, but haven't heard a thing from him.
  19. Why do they do such a big waitlist? Is it because a lot of people turn down their initial offers and so they need a large number of waitlists from which to choose? How do people think the loss of Russ Shafer-Landau will impacy people's decisions to attend?
  20. Don't forget that three people already said they would decline the UW-Madison offer over the next couple of weeks
  21. So that sounds like three people are declining offers from UW-Madison's waitlist, with a total of seven (including mine) posted on the forum. I wonder how many people they accept off of the waitlist? Does anyone have any experience with this? Also, did UW-Madison send out a generic waitlist message, or was it individual?
  22. Personally I don't think many people are inclined to accept offers to UW-Madison generally. I mean, not many people want to study in Wisconsin. It's too cold there. Seriously. Don't underestimate how much the climate and scenery impacts people's decisions on where to study, especially if they have options from different schools including slightly higher-ranked ones...
  23. I am wait listed at University of Wisconsin, Madison. Is anybody planning on turning down an offer of acceptance or a spot on the wait list?
  24. I just got an official email notifying me that I am on the wait list at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Is anybody planning on declining an offer of admission or wait list offer at UW?
  25. I don't think I'll get an offer from CUNY, the silence is just too consistent with the string of rejections I've had so far. But other people may have a much better chance, so good luck to all of you.
