  1. Hi everyone,

Joining the conversation. I've never applied to grad school and I have no idea what I'm doing!

I have a B.Arch and worked as an architect for 3 years. I quit the profession to focus on sculpture and prepare a portfolio!  Scary...

    Here's my list:

    Yale
    Columbia
    Rutgers
    Bard
    SAIC
    MICA
    Temple
    SVA
    Rutgers

Should I trim? Add a safety school? Cry?

    I love this forum.

i go to temple and I am in LOVE.

  2. Its not about a specific lack of something, but about the value of what one can gain/learn from the time away from school.

To be clear, I totally agree that there is no catch-all advice, and that many are ready to go straight from undergrad, but I do think that carryover's advice is good, perhaps without the tone of definitiveness that (s)he uses.

Okay so I applied straight from undergrad and got in several places. I had to work while in school and had to manage my time at both work and school and art. I have two degrees, a BFA and french. I spent two years in France to get real life experience in my sophomore and junior year of college. I've matured greatly and developed a core foundation of critical thinking that I apply to my life everyday. I think ones track is personal and unique. Some people come out of undergraduate school mature and well rounded. Others don't. I would say it depends :).

  3. Anyone want a roommate to share a place in northern liberties or fishtown ? I'll be at Tyler school of art and am looking into these two neighborhoods. PM me I'll be in a graduate program so I'm not looking/keen on roommates who love house parties and need a semi quiet environment. That said I'm outgoing and easy to get along with !

    -Sarah

  4. Can't decide between a couple schools right now. Tyler offered me a free semester in Rome but then can't guarantee me funding the other 3 semesters, which really sucks because I want to go there the most. Im torn about it but I feel I may have to decline. I just can't justify taking out all those loans so I am really leaning towards Hunter starting in the spring. Hunter is soooooo cheap for NY and is also a really good school. Of all the highly ranked MfA programs it has to be the best bang for your buck.

Im also on the waitlist for VCU though and really want to see how that works out as well.

I also interviewed with Columbia a few weeks ago and still haven't heard back. I know they probably won't offer much funding (and i therefore wouldn't go) but it bothers me that I haven't heard back. Gaaahhhh I thought I would have figured all this out by now. Maybe I am just bad at making decisions?

I'm biased I want to tell you Tyler !! Sounds like hunter is a great opportunity
  5. hi, sorry to divert, but i wanted to drop a line because i haven't seen a ton of graphic design people on here.

i recently graduated with a bio major and started working towards an mfa about a year ago, and navigating this process has been terribly confusing. thank god for this forum, or else i would have been totally lost.

by some miracle i actually got into a couple of programs, and now i'm struggling with how to choose and coming up with funding, etc. i've gotten it narrowed to three, saic's pmfa (3 year) viscomm (minimal funding), cca's mfa design (3 year graphic design track) (1/3 tuition), and pratt's mfa communications design (2 year) (no word on funding... the agony!).

anybody heard anything good/bad about these programs? they seem really different and i'm terrified (but also excited) about the prospect of having to choose. there's a lot i don't know, so i'm hoping to find a program that will help me develop a stronger, iterative design process, but also ultimately challenges me to the standard of an mfa. (and on another note, how does leveraging scholarships/finaid work? i don't want to be demanding, but tuition is expensiveee)

sorry for this novel of a post and the lack of capitalization.

    tl;dr - saic pmfa viscomm (3yr)/ cca mfa design (3yr, w. 1/3 tuition)/ pratt mfa comD (2yr). help?

One of my friends went to CCA for design and got a full time big boy job in SF doing exactly that. The connections are great and he calls himself a not so starving artist. He job his job specifically because of a connection at CCA

  6. Thanks for the response, heyward!! Appreciate the thoughts. Theory v. technical is def what I am looking for in an interdisciplinary environment. Curious if you know any scholarships for students in the area - I'm from NYC, so not as familiar with the landscape in SF. Trying to find a way to make living expenses work, ahh!

There's a group of them you can apply for but after you start your MFA practice. CCA will give you information on these when you're there. Sounds like CCA would be a good fit for you. The Bay Area is great and the way of life in California is amazing with health a priority. But I grew up here so I'm biased

  7. Called UC San Diego yesterday, was told I have been "Nominated for Admission" from the department, but won't get a real email until after it passes through the Graduate Division.

But in any case, Yay! UCSD was awesome when I visited. If people are thinking about reapplying next year, think about UCSD.

My favorite artist goes there. Check out Cathy Ellis
  8. Anybody have thoughts on CCA? I haven't visited yet, but I'm weighing a pretty strong funding offer from them with lower funding offers (but wayyyy less expensive cities - so living expenses in the Bay are a big concern). I dig the program from what I see so far and am interested in their dual-degree with Visual + Critical Studies.

My options at this point are CCA Fine Arts, UPenn (low funding offer), RISD Photo (low funding), CalArts Photo (funding TBD), and MICA Photo (funding TBD).

Anyone have perspectives on these programs? UPenn was (is?) my top choice but their funding offer is way too low to make it feasible...

CCA is a pretty amazing place. Really really Great program. More theory then technical. More conceptual. My friend went there and got a super nice job in SF afterwards because of the connections. The bay area is a lot. But there's so many scholarships for grad students who study there. If you decide CCA, look into those and you'll be fine

  9. Accepted into Tyler! I was told I would only pay basically half of everything including a TA assistantship in Rome the very first semester. Kind of intimidated to study abroad first thing but its the best offer i've gotten so far

It could be the teacher doing Rome the first semester (I interviewed with him but forgot his name) wants to work with you ! I studied abroAd two yesrs in my undergrad in FrAnce. This is a great offer and you get to see all the masters for a couple months and be in Europe ! Don't be scared !! This is exciting congrats !!

  10. I got denied last week with no email, just checked on my own. I interviewed in person, emailed the program chair with a follow-up question after he said "I'd be happy to answer any additional questions over email" to no response--so not that surprising.

do we check on the same page we applied? or is it through owlnet or whatever with our student ids which are temporary ?
