I'm starting a joint degree in the fall -- a PhD in Sociology, with a MA in Gender Studies, at SUNY Albany. I know it's not your ideal in terms of a dual PhD, but the interplay between the departments was what cemented my choice to attend. I was seeking similar programs to you, and this fit worked best for me. Otherwise, I haven't seen a comparative marriage between the two.
I've just officially decided to attend SUNY Albany. It's surreal to say yes to someone! Also a bit hard to say no to others...does anyone have an almost harder time pushing the "no" button for reasons of "what if my 'yes' choice changes its mind?" Haha, imposter syndrome begins now.
Thanks; this is super helpful! The Gender faculty also seem to have strong English & CompLit backgrounds. It's seemed like a very welcoming department, and I'm planning on going to visit and ask questions (ie, what are department strengths). Just really uncertain where it fares in regards to others, as I'm sure they won't tell me that necessarily -- don't want to accidentally end up in a program dismissed in the field...
I don't have an academic background in Gender (my experience is all fieldwork), so I missed out on need-to-knows, like respected vs. non-respected institutions.
This helps ease my mind.
Hi all, does anyone have any info on the Global Gender Studies PhD program at SUNY Buffalo? I don't see it spoken about here, nor is it as flashy as an Emory or Rutgers for instance, but I've been admitted with full funding (+ TA position and a sizable Presidential Fellowship) and so am curious to know more.
