  1. Thanks grifter. What I don't understand is that I haven't heard *anything at all* from Purdue. Absolutely nothing. I emailed the DGS a week ago, but no reply. The last communication I had from them was on March 12, when the grad secretary told me that a decision won't be made for at least another 2 weeks. But now it's been 3 weeks. I'd like to think that I'm on the waitlist, but based on the results forum, it looks like Purdue hasn't sent out rejections either. So it seems they're holding on to everyone's applications, not just the waitlisted ones. I can't make head or tail of what they're doing. It would have made more sense if they had sent out the rejections and were just holding on to the ones they'd like to admit. This non-communication is just killing me
  2. I'm dying waiting for Purdue to respond. After being rejected by 8 programs this is pretty much my last hope. I emailed the DGS at the beginning of the week, but haven't got any reply. Why are they taking so long? Anyone know what's going on there?
  3. Is it absolutely necessary to establish prior contact with a potential advisor? I am an international student and I really didn't know the importance of contacting profs until I read about it on thegradcafe, and by that time, all my applications (for PhD in English) had been sent in long ago. I can see how it would be absolutely necessary in the sciences, since there you'd be working in such-and-such prof's lab, or be paid from the prof's grant funding, etc. But is it the same in the humanities? Does the fact that I didn't contact any potential advisors automatically mean I'll be disqualified? I think I will have to reapply next year, so I'd really appreciate any advice on this issue.
  4. Hi all, I wanted to ask for a bit of advice. I've applied to English PhD programs, and have been rejected by 4 so far, and am waiting to hear from the remaining 6. Unfortunately, my GRE Verbal is really low, esp for an applicant to English PhD programs. I have a feeling that the remaining 6 will come back as rejections as well. Now, although I applied for the PhD, I'd like to be considered for the MA if rejected from the PhD. Some schools automatically do this (e.g. Rochester), but others don't. For the schools that don't automatically do this, would it look bad if I emailed the DGS and asked to be considered for the MA if rejected from the PhD? Or will it look like I'm desperate? Actually, I'm just being realistic about not being a sufficiently good candidate for PhD acceptance at the moment, but I might be good enough for the MA. Please advise!! Thanks...
