  1. I've gotten advice from some people who went through the program and there are definitely plenty of positive things to say about the experience and opportunities the MAs at places like Columbia and Chicago have to offer. With that said, I've concluded that I can't take $50k-$100k out in loans to finance a program that may lead me nowhere. Even if guaranteed success, I can't see how I could justify that much debt in addition to old undergrad debt and eventual doctoral debt that will surely come later. Perhaps things would be different if I had family that could help with the disgusting (and in my opinion, unethical) pricetag. But if that were the case, I'm sure I'd have more interest in pursuing some bourgeois field (pretending for a moment sociology isn't one). By no means am I trying to offend anyone who pursued an MA at a place like Columbia. They've always given me solid and helpful advice. As someone who contemplated doing it, I was just hoping to explain why some people can't.

Thay may offer tuition waiver (this is what ingot for Chicago master). Don't lost hope!

  2. I don't know if this is the right place to vent, but the frustration of these all just went to overdrive mode. Like almost all of you here, I worked my butt off for application, and have no back up plans that is viable or even anything remotely to anything I am comfortable doing. I am a Business major, my boyfriend, my family, all of them have been criticising me for wanting to do Sociology, they tell me what can you do with that? It's a useless subject for people with too much time..and last of all, they have been saying that I have been wasting my money applying for Sociology programs with a Bachelors of Business background and if I fail, it's cause I am too ignorant to recognise that. I have 4 schools left and the lack of response is turning me into a wreck. Nobody supports my decision to pursue this and so many people are waiting to see me fail. I don't know what I am going to do in September, most of us that haven't got any good decisions don't and brrr...potato. I just wanted to vent. Thanks for reading!

I totally understand! I used to be a business major and later switched. It was tough, but hang in there. Things will finally work out! You are doing something you really like and that's the point!

  3. I really think it depends on the program. Stanford told me that the wait list I'm on there is very, very short. I think it is largely dependent on the percentage of admitted students whom are offered admission that typically accept the offer.

Yeah, exactly. And WLs are always short. It's not college app lol. Good luck!

  4. After carefully reviewing your offer, I am sorry to inform you that I are unable to attend your program. You should not view this as a reflection on your ability, but rather as a comment on the limited size of me and the record number of programs I was admitted to this year.

Best of luck in your future endeavors,

    FreddyDoug

    THIS IS BRILLIANT!!!

    Best of the day!

  5. Mine says the same, and I didn't apply for the MA (and actually am a grad of their MA program, so I can only assume they aren't going to offer me MA admission as a consolation prize like they do with some other PhD applicants...) I would just wait it out a little while. If the administrative assistants in that department say not all acceptances have been sent out, I'm inclined to trust them despite the mixed messages. Try not to think about it too much and good luck! :)

are you in the quantitative data analysis program? I applied to it. Is that good?

  6. Thanks Maxine! Congrats on all your acceptances too! I am really struggling with the decision now. I was set on Duke but I haven't heard anything from my strongest POI. I emailed him once in the fall with no response and once after I got accepted and nothing. There are other people at Duke who I'd want to work with who have been really responsive but the non-responsive guy is the one I was most interested in working with. It feels like a pretty bad sign that he is totally silent even after I've been accepted...

I don't have any new acceptance, anxiously waiting for Michigan (I guess I've been rejected by stanford and harvard already)...

For Duke, i guess they must give all students lots of money (i have to say i'm jealous haha). I think you probably should go to the visit day. Usually, you can set appointments with POIs during visit days and most profs should be available during those two days, so you can then get a sense of him/her as a "person" lol Btw, I think big names are generally busier and thus more "non-responsive" lololol
