  1. @FeministCorgi- the processor for the Air is significantly slower than the Pro. Even though they are both listed at Intel i5. I don't know what software you use, but if you use SPSS, I would say go with the Pro. I ran into the same conondrum myself and after reviewing the info seems the Pro is the way to go.

I would say that if one is doing SPSS or statistical/graphing/heavy empirical data, definitely use the pro. I'm still up in the air as I am not really doing that but might be doing images, some figures, and the like so I am torn still. but the mobility is an issue w/ my bad back.=p

  2. I was the one who started that discussion.

I decided to go mac after all my years as PC. The question for me is Air or pro w/ retina. I think I'm leaning towards air for mobility and depending on your grad field, you don't need the 16gb + 5xx flash storage as an air 256 pci storage + 8gb memory will suffice w/ operations.

  3. Update: I was contacted by the chair of my department today...they offered me a Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) which comes with full tuition remission (including remission of the out-of-state portion of tuition), fees, health insurance, and a stipend. I am INCREDIBLY excited and will accept their offer momentarily.

I am incredibly excited with how my season turned out and I hope everyone else fares as well as we come down the stretch.

    Best!

Congrats!! Where did you accept again? And tomorrow is the deadline! good luck all=)

  4. you will quickly see how fast money flies in NYC.  Depending on where you live, the average 1 bedroom is about 1000-1200 dollars a month. studios a good 800-900 (out of city in brooklyn/queens of course).

Food is amazingly expensive. You can literally spend 100 on groceries and be like "What did I buy?" But yes, NYU offers an amazing package and 26k is enough to make it. Allot about half (13k) to rent, utilities, and other bills.

  5. I will also be denying IUB's offer within the next few days, so anyone on the waitlist might hear good news soon, I hope =).

And Guillame, UofMinnesota was slightly a better fit for my research interests and the security with funding is AMAZING there (I also like the city vibe more than the small/quaint town vibe). Both programs are flexible, where IUB is slightly more flexible I think, which made this a difficult decision.

  6. I took a gap year after high school and realized my life outside of the academy is well lifeless. The academy might give me a whole lot of stress but, for some odd reason, my body loves the stress and cannot seem to live without it.

I also really love the idea of researching about topics that I like and being on my own, especially away from these general education classes that have nothing to do with my field (yeah, I know well-rounded student).

Also, student loans... (this was a soft factor but still mattered).

  7. Also, in a weird turn of events, I've recently found out that I'm high up on wait lists at two of my top choice programs--and rejected at every single one of my many "safeties." I couldn't be more honored, but I also couldn't be more anxious.... Wow I had no idea applying to PhD programs would be so intense!

two waitlists are better than  one. I'm sure one will work out. I was  in the same predicament.

  8. I wish I could go but I'm going to a diff school's weekend. Planning on visiting IU in April.

After the weekend, I'd love to hear what you thought.

I know my visit won't be as exciting as the official one and don't want that to influence my final decision.

I will PM you when I return. I am excited, nervous, and terrified. Most importantly, I want to know about funding. =p

  9. If you e-mail your POI or the person who contacted you, you should ask how the alternate/waitlist works. Is it ranked? Or is it by research area? the latter means you are dependent on someone else with similar research interests declining. If it is ranked, hope you are numbers 1-3. Usually if you are beyond 2 or 3 for a waitlist it doesn't look that good, but never lose hope! You never know, seriously!

  10. I wouldn't underestimate how much the weather is affecting people. Every snow day and day you can't get in requires quite a bit of time to work around and catch up with.

Either way, I hope the wait for you guys is over very, very soon with happy news :)

Just to echo this, the snow has been really bad in the Northeast so I don't doubt that there can be delays!

  11. Hi all,

I was recently accepted to my 1st PhD program and was just wondering which tablet to get for grad school?

I have not crossed over to apple products yet and still use a PC ultrabook. The ultrabook is great but the unreliability of wifi is annoying. The surface pro 3 has a 10% off for those with .edu e-mails. Do apple products have the same offer or no?

I guess my main questions are : How would you rate the Durability, Organization? etc,

How friendly is the apple interface?

Are all apps/programs available across Microsoft and apple (barring Microsoft office) platforms?

    Thanks =)!
