  1. That's a difficult question. It used to be very obvious to me (NU)....but the more I look into UMich and talk to people, the more I like it too. I would still say Pr(Accept NU's offer) > Pr(Accept Mich Offer). I've lived in Evanston for 2.5 months before, and I love it there. Never been to Ann Arbor. Visit will determine a LOT for me. What about you ORmalv? Assuming you get into the rest of your schools, where is # 1 at the moment?
  2. I talked to the guy that I know who is head of one of the labs in ORFE and he said that they have basically made all of their decisions already. They met 2 weeks ago with their narrowed list....and selected the final group during that week.
  3. yep....the ORFE. :-)
  4. What school is it? If it is a school on this list: http://www.cgsnet.org/portals/0/pdf/CGS_Resolution.pdf then under that resolution you have NO obligation to accept offers before april 15. However, what is even better is that you can accept and offer and withdraw your acceptance before April 15th and it's ok according to that document. So, if they really want an acceptance, you could just do accept to get the offer, then reject if something better comes up. That's a tough situation....if i were in your shoes I would do what I just said ONLY after I called the Graduate School and asked them what their policies were on requiring students to accept and reject offers on demand before formal paperwork. Most likely what the professor is doing is NOT in accordance with that.
  5. Yeah I'll probably go ahead and tell Princeton "no". I'm thinking I'll be happier elsewhere. :-)
  6. Did you check the email for an attachment? Mine didn't say it in the email but I had an attachment with admit letter.
  7. I got admitted to UMich!
  8. So another topic to keep things interesting: what do you all do other than research/classes? For fun? Also, who is undergrad and who is a grad student?
  9. Congrats! ah you should have posted it earlier so we could have all patted you on the back. :-) You guys are too kind about my profile...everyone on here seems to be great and we're all probably competitive and have weaknesses in ways that aren't expressed by these stats. And to those who were wondering, I did low 700s the first round of GRE Quantitative. I retook it later in December after I submitted the Stanford app and did much better(though worse on verbal!). I am an undergrad still...I'll graduate in May with my BS IE. I also go to a big state school, not top 10. We're in the top 25 IE programs though no one would expect that who heard my school's name. : ) I'm so happy to have gotten admitted to any program I applied to. getting accepted to a school high on my list kind of keeps this from being anything I'm really sad about. I'm crossing my fingers for my friend. He refuses to look at these boards and doesn't want me to tell him anything. So maybe I'll be able to act surprised for him if he gets into Stanford!
  10. me too! First app I filled out and I felt like I didn't do as well on it. Also reflected my less than awesome round 1 of GRE scores. My best friend might still be in the running though...he didn't get an email! I'm hoping he gets in. :-) Do you think they sent out all rejections at once and everyone else is admitted or that was just "round 1" of rejections? Interesting that we both got in to NU and rejected by Stanford, btw.
  11. Got accepted to Univ Florida today. :-)
  12. NICE! Congrats~!
  13. I haven't heard anything yet. I would guess in the next few days or so?
  14. you'll probably get a generic reply, but you don't have to give them your name.
  15. interesting! Do you know who you would want to work under?
  16. distracting myself with work.

  17. I stated it in my personal statement. It's part of my broader impacts in a way...how <0.5% of adults in my hometown have advanced degrees, very few people go to college(<10% have bachelors degrees) ,etc. But I've made an effort to go back to encourage my high school's current students to go to college 1x a semester, and to tell them about undergrad research. And I'm doing the same at my "unranked state school" that I'm at as well...holding "yes, you CAN go to grad school, and go out of state" panels. It's a topic I'm passionate about, but not something that I expect to weigh heavily other than the fact that I'm from the south(geographically less represented than the typical applicant), and I have been pretty self motivated in my choice of getting a PhD.
  18. stupid weather. I would think that when they make their decision, they usually hold on to it before all decision are made and that's why they release it 1.5 months after they start meeting in early Feb. So, I'm guessing that we'll still have a decision around the expected time.
  19. I think I have at least a 65% chance.. :-) High GPA, decent GRE scores(had to send in the lower version though...retook the GRE b/c Q = 720) 4 years research experience w/ publications/conference pubs. NSF REUs(2). Had 3 people look at my application who have served on committee in past. They said it helps that I'm from a small town, none of my family has a degree in sciences/math/engineering or has every gone to grad school. And they said the NSF has to fulfill quotas from different geographical demographics...so since I'm from the south it helps(b/c a large # of apps are NOT from the south). One of my recommendation writers has served on NSF for years, and was appointed to Nat. Science Board by Clinton back in the day. I'm hoping that helps.
  20. Yep! I'm going to be there. Yay!
  21. YAY! Congrats to both of you. Willow, are you coming in a few weeks to visit NU?
  22. to NU? I received an attachment "offer letter" with my admission email....did you check that? What's your top choice for school?
  23. Who, Professor Nelson?
  24. I know that it's not spam. It's what they did 2 years ago with my friend...not that getting the email = getting in, but did you see that someone posted rejection today from michigan? It seems to be their standard(my friend warned me of this email...said I might get one of these...about two weeks ago)...let people know to save that date if they haven't been rejected yet.
  25. So, everyone check their status for the NSF application. Make sure they have received EVERYTHING....I found out last week that they didn't get my GRE scores(I guess they didn't request them)? So I emailed them and they THEN did it. Woooo. Also, the date of receipt for my transcripts is really later than the deadline, even though I called them the day before the deadline to make sure they had it. Hope that doesn't make a difference. :-) Who here thinks they have a GOOD chance, a BAD chance and WHY?
