  1. So, I got accepted to few programs, and while I am attempting to narrow down my choices, I figured I would ask for opinions here. SUNY-Binghamton, University of Utah, GMU, UCR, University of Oregon, and Boston U (most likely). Does anyone have any info about what kind of culture these departments have? Are people (student-student, and professors-students) there competitive, helpful, etc.,?

While, funding, fit, goals, etc., are important, I also don’t want to end up in a department where people hate each other. You can’t get this kind of information from the schools’ websites, so I figured I would ask here.

    Thank you J

I was just at Binghamton and got a lot of information from professors and grad students. PM me if you need info.

  2. I got one today at 6:27pm (Eastern time). E-mail from Millie Thayer with funding letter attached and invitation to recruitment event at the end of March. Not sure of they are done sending out acceptances, though.

EDIT: From previous years, it seems like they send all acceptances on the same day, and then they send all rejections a few weeks later. I wonder if they have an unofficial wait list.

So who got the Amherst acceptances so far? What time did you receive them today?

  3. I've been asking about that admit but no body is claiming it. Maybe it's fake???

Anybody have any information on Boston College or USC? Emailed BC today and they said "All applications for Sociology are currently under review and decisions will be mailed out shortly." but I saw an acceptance from the 13th on the results search??

  4. Congrats!!! It looks like the Chancellor's fellowship is $24k a year + fees!!! Congrats again!!! :)

Yay yay yay I got into Santa Cruz!! I got an unofficial email a few hours ago. They gave me a Chancellor's Fellowship with guaranteed funding for three years, but haven't yet told me exactly how much money I'll get. Let me know if you have any questions! In years past it seems like they've trickled out acceptances all the way into March, so no worries if you don't hear today.

Edit: I'd love to talk to other folks who got in about funding and things. Pm me please!

  5. Jason Jones, he is using this new method of acquiring big data from social media (Facebook, twitter) to test hypotheses. Although I also mentioned I'd like to work with Rebekah Buroway (poverty and development) and Kathleen Fallon (women social movements in developing countries).

    I'm going into economic sociology.

ritsukot74, which professor are you hoping to work with? Are you going to go into the gender specialization?

  6. Oh!! I actually JUST got an offer from Stony Brook!!!!! Will read and let you guys know soon!

EDIT: Ok, so I got a pretty generic email from DGS Wanda Vega with a funding and housing letter attached. They guarantee housing, pay for health insurance, and full tuition plus stipend. Funding is for the year 2015-16 and it is renewable for 4+ years based on "normal" progress in the program. Feel free to PM me with questions.

  7. Did you get a formal funding letter? Are you going to their recruitment day???

I got in to UIC. Biggest hole in my application was my quantitative GRE score (a sorry 147) but my verbal and writing were good. Other parts of my application were strong too, including strong LOR's. I have yet to hear back from Santa Cruz and CUNY!
