  1. I don't know about you guys, but I am chomping at the bit to hear from Harvard. I hope some of us get good news soon.

Some things have been said about Harvard on the previous pages... but there are still no posted results.

By the way, what is a "solicited rejection"?

  2. This post is hidden because you have chosen to ignore posts by pot.

    Nice!

Why some schools are taking SO long to reject candidates? I know that I am out of some programs by the number of posts seen on the results page + the time since first accepted candidates appeared (Example: University of Toronto), but I never received any email from them letting me know...

  3. Not "whatever." It should be well within the prospect of horizons for a so-called Classicist to score above at least the 90th percentile verbal. If one cannot leap over a rather modest 160, perhaps the blame is in oneself.

Pot, you are desperately needing a group hug. I know this are hard times, I really know. Hopefully, some schools like Stanford are accepting persons with really low IQ, like me. God bless them!

And yes, you're blocked, little coward guy. End of story.

To the rest of this wonderful forum: please let me know if you find any of my posts offensive or rude. I really think that the "Haters gonna hate!" posts in the results page are disgusting, and I would hate to give that impression.

  4. Oh wow, I did not see that nor did I ever find out about that until just now. I just remember being caught slightly offguard by the Stanford and Brown deadlines (or at least the original Brown deadline) since theirs were roughly 2 weeks before a pile of departments whose deadlines were on the Dec. 15th.

Edit: Ah, just noticed your original post on that was from January 21st, I didn't start lurking here until I got my first acceptance at the end of January hence why I missed it.

My applications for Stanford and Brown were insane: GRE got late, SoP was too long, official transcript should be mailed, I was afraid of touching the wrong button all the time, etc. The answer to one of my "insanity emails" (Dear Sir or Madam I am really sorry but the scores/but ETS/but my university/1007 words!!) was the extension of Brown's deadline. And I still wonder why they did it.

  5.

One applicant admitted to feeling “a thrill of excitement every time he/she steps into a morgue.” Another wrote “a 10-page narrative of herself as Dorothy on the yellow-brick road to graduate school.” A third indicated that heor she “had performed (acted?) in pornographic movies, which was not well received by the admissions department in consideration for acceptance into graduate school.”

My application wasn't that bad after all!  :)

  6. Yup, they can rescind acceptances for basically any reason. I'm sure there will be some people who disagree with me, I've just heard some hilarious "kiss of death" stories (if you will) about it from professors and grad students alike.

KISS OF DEATH? WAS IST DAS?

P.S.: I really understand the fact that some US applicants hate GradCafé and the reasons that can lead them to hate it. I do. So they close the web page, turn around and ask their older brothers, aunts or acquaintances about the application process. Or they can hear through the grape vines if some committee has decided whose in the wait list. Well, good for them. I don't have access to that privilege: no one around me understands the process of applications, I've never been to the USA, I've never seen or talked to someone with a degree in, just to name a few, Stanford, Berkeley, Columbia or Harvard. As a result, GradCafé is a unique tool for me.

  7.

I also want to say that I know for a fact of a couple of administrative boards who look at this forum regularly. There are stories bouncing around from current grad students at my university of people who've been admitted and later lost their acceptances based off of a combination of actions during the prospectives weekend and comments on here.

Woa, one can lose an acceptance from a school?! I didn't know that.

  8. Don't be so pessimistic, RedViper! If professors are snowed in and, consequently,  aren't able to make it into the university in order to read the applications that could slow down the process a whole lot. For example, I believe Harvard had 3 of 7 snow days in its history this year.

    And don't forget staff!

They are key elements in all the application process + less involved than professors in it.

  9. Not posting results is like dropping litter in the streets: everyone thinks one's actions are not relevant until GC dies or streets are filled with rubbish.

And I am sure that this phrase would sound better if I were a native speaker.

  10. Stealing the idea from Philosophy's thread, I open this "Waiting List Thread 2015" in order to organize the movements of the waiting lists.

And how does this work? Well...

    1. Waitlisted? Come and share. We know how you feel, bro.

    2. Accepted from two universities in the same town? Turn down the offer of your not-so-beloved university and share the moment with us.

    3. Accepted from lots of universities all around the world? Lucky you! Turn down the offers you're not going to take and also share the moment with us.

Profit: Waitlisted persons know that they can keep on dreaming and waiting for a place in X University. Accepted can share some joy with waitlisted. Much love in the air.

More information can never hurt, so please contribute!

  11. Taking into account your admittedly very personal ranking of these programs, may I ask why you think so highly of Texas? I suspect it's a difference in interests but whenever I glanced at their faculty, I found very few people interesting for Greek literature so I dismissed them immediately for my own purposes but I didn't actually look to see if they had strengths in other areas.

I really love Woodruff's, White' and Perlman's work (all brilliant in Greek + Philosophy)... but yes, the roman side of the department is not breathtaking, I guess.

I wonder why Harvard lacks of a strong department (as we would expect from Harvard University) in Classics...
