  1. Yup-- I said Social Personality... I'll call again tomorrow to double check-- I think it's too late now to call again. Did anyone get any emails from UIUC?
  2. I'm confused now-- so the grad coordinator said one thing but someone just posted an acceptance to UIUC Social-Personality on the results page...
  3. So I just called the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign graduate coordinator five minutes ago. She said that the Social-Personality area hasn't made any decisions yet. I asked if we are supposed to get phone or Skype interviews first and she said that yes there will and the emails for these will be sent before any official invites for the graduate in-person interview. I asked if she knew when the Skype/phone interviews will be happening, but she said that they will occur probably around mid February, but she wasn't sure because she hasn't heard anything yet from the Social-Personality area. TXInstrument11-- you were right! the grad coordinator is super nice!
  4. I heard that in the past though UIUC has had phone interviews. But I don't know how reliable that info is. I hope though that this year it's different because I haven't heard anything from my POI. Wow- the grad coordinator does sound nice. I'll try sending an email on Monday and I'll post an update. Thanks for the info!
  5. You're brave! Can I private message you to ask who your POI is?
  6. I really don't like how vague they are... But at least if we don't hear back by February 15, we can assume that it's a rejection... But I'm concerned-- I didn't even receive a Skype interview or an email from my POI. I was told that all Psych programs first Skype-interview you and then determine if you're good enough for the short list for the in person interview.
  7. Let's move to a new topic (and avoid a messy and pointless argument with Psych Face- if I've learned anything from my Social Psych and Social Cognition classes is that the more you try to change someone's beliefs, the harder they'll push back against you, and the firmer they'll believe in whatever they believe, regardless of how incorrect their belief is). New topic: has anyone heard back from any other schools? I'm particularly interested in UIUC.
  8. For Social Psych, yes. I had a Skype interview with the prof and 2 Skype interviews with his grad students in early January. Since I'm international, they didn't call me for an interview. But I think the recruitment day already happened for Social Psych. I'm still waiting to hear back but you know, no word is bad news (in my case). But the Toronto Social Psych is a joint program with all of the U of T campuses (St. George, Mississauga, Scarborough).
  9. I know but the fact that there are laws restricting international students to ridiculously low numbers is saying something. Again, THERE ARE LAWS. In the US at least, I don't have to deal with the the whole international status because I'm not international in the US. Also, by the way, I'm not saying that they are better. Admission rates aren't a good indicator of how good the program is.
  10. Actually Canadian schools are more selective than US schools. Last year, I got an interview at Toronto. My POI really wanted me and she said that she did fight for me really hard but ultimately, I didn't get in because they had really, really limited funding for non-Canadians. She referenced some Ontario law that restricts the number of international students to a really ridiculously small number- like 4-- per year. And also, 2 of the most badass researchers I know are at UBC and Toronto. Just to be clear. Also, this year at the Skype interview, the UofT prof asked me why my math GRE score is lower than my verbal. So the GRE matters about just as much as in the US.
  11. Can you please ask if anyone knows which profs haven't yet sent out invites? (that is, if you feel comfortable) I'd like to know so I won't get my hopes up needlessly.
  12. I graduated from UC Berkeley, worked in two of the most popular labs there, and I still didn't get one in person interview. So I doubt that the reputation of the school matters.Oh and I have worked in labs since my freshman year. In terms of research experience, I have tons. But no one matters how hard I work or that I took every opportunity granted to me or that I have a ton of posters (12).
  13. I know. and then sucky part is that getting pubs is all about luck. Doesn't say anything about your ability. I got lucky- the grad student that I worked with in undergrad felt bad for me and took me on a publication. But this doesn't happen most of the time.
  14. I cried too, particularly on Friday when I found out on this forum that my to school, UC Irvine had already sent the interview invitations. I was useless for the whole day. Also, what I have been told is that I need more publications-2-3. And I get how you can't afford a master program- I can't either. But I'm glad that this is helping. If you need to chat, please feel free to private message me.
  15. I so sorry. but I feel you. This is my second time applying and it looks like I'm also not getting in anywhere. I'm gonna have to take yet another year off. So I totally understand how you must feel- powerless and devastated. Cry it out (or ideally, go for a run) but know that you'll start feeling better once you start thinking of what to do next. Also, please know that all of these rejections don't mean that you're not good enough- just that you've been unlucky. Grad apps are a crapshoot, a lottery. At every school you only have a 10% chance of getting in even if you have publications (like in my case) and fantastic letters of recommendation and a sparkling CV. It has just gotten incredibly competitive to get into grad school. But don't give up. Life always has a way of working out, even if it's not the way you wanted it to work out.
  16. Lovely... I guess that's gonna be a rejection for me as well. I haven't heard anything from them... Yay... Other than UBC, I'm waiting on 3 more schools but odds are that I'm going to be forced to take another year off. Thanks for the info though! Better to know than not to know.
  17. Do you mean University of Illinois, at Urbana Champaign?
  18. Ooo. I'm sorry! That sucks!
  19. Wait, you heard from Arizona State University? (I saw it from your signature) When did you hear back and in what form? I haven't heard anything from them.
  20. Lovely. I wonder when ASU will send out interview notifications. I'd like to know if that ship has sailed too...
  21. Has anyone applied to Arizona State University? Has anyone heard back from them?
  22. Hi, I applied to University of British Columbia but I haven't heard anything at all. Which is really worrisome but then again, I've applied to the MA in Social Psych and I'm non-Canadian.
  23. Thanks. At least there's a little bit of hope left for that.
  24. Thanks... UIUC , UBC, and ASU are my last shreds of hope... Fingers crossed that I won't have to take a year off.
  25. Awesome... So I'll put those down as rejections... Looks like I may have to take another year off...
