Nice, same. Dare we call it an oldie but a goodie? That's depressing and weird. There was a time that the art scene in NYC and Boston that having seen this was a required prerequisite to being issued your cool arty person card. Haha. That and Pi - people were obsessed with Pi.

I hear that, and same here! But isn't it kinda fun? Being all wrapped up in this? Chasing your dreams? Applying to good schools, applying to be a part of something, no idea how it will turn out, if you'll get in, if you'll make the right choice if you have more than one choice? For me this is all like Christmas extending all the way through to Jan, Feb, and beyond. We are all so privileged to be in a place to even dream these dreams.

Hi everyone: I can't believe I'm back at the Grad Cafe! Ugh/Haha! Last time I was here was when I was applying PhDs in Clinical Psych in 2009 for the 2010 app cycle. That was successful and I've had my doc and and been in the field since 2014. And now I'm ready to begin a phase I always knew would come - my writing. All my apps are now in, and so the exhaustion is real and the nervous waiting begins. I applied to Iowa, Brown, Syracuse, NYU, Columbia,Hunter, BU, Emerson, and Bennington. Anyway, just wanted to chime in and to wish everyone all the best of luck! Please let us know when and what you hear and I'll do the same.

Cost of living in Berkeley is significantly more expensive than Boston? Might want to re-think that assessment.

Thanks for the positivity - I definitely need it. I have another interview at 8am tomorrow. I'm trying REAL hard not to let this possible setback influence my vibe for tomorrow. What a process, huh?

Okay, so I had an interview this past Thursday. Today, I heard from two of my fellow invitees - one got an offer, the other a waitlist. Both via phone, both from the DCT. Meanwhile, my phone was silent. What do we make of this? Definite no? I mean, the list of accepted and waitlisted can't be that long - wouldn't these all happen the same day? Bummed.

I have to say, that as a person currently in grad school, and who comes from a long line of academics I find this to be one of the most inaccurate articulations of academic training and post-doc career potentials that I have ever heard. Based on my own experience, this post extremely unidimensional in it's thought and is potentially pernicious - almost the the point of absurdity. I can't help but feel there is some sort of agenda at work here. Don't take my word for it though, the research here is easy to do. Simply research the individuals who currently hold the posts you'd like to eventually hold and look at their background. I can't speak for all disciplines and field, but I can tell you that, in general, there are number of within-individual factors that trump the school where you did your grad work. Essentially, the quality, usefulness, and originality of one's research are the best predictor of career trajectory. There ARE efficacious mentors outside of top 25 programs. That's just a fact. There are people who hold important chairs at top 25 universities who did their own grad work outside of that structure - for a plethora of reasons. Fit is more important than school rank. School rank is important as a factor and variable - but it's not the prima facie factor as this "reaistic" (read: cynic) suggests. Good luck. Take a breath. Be yourself.

If you haven't heard from BU I'm pretty sure that's bad news. As far as I know all invitations went out 1/25 or thereabout. I have word that they received ~700 apps this year!! Otherwise, I think the programs you listed are still deciding. http://more.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=679923
